๐Ÿ”ฅ Bitget confirms $351M breach โ€” and says it's got it covered

Bitget, one of the larger crypto exchanges by trading volume, has confirmed unauthorized transfers draining $351.6 million from a portion of its hot and warm wallets. The incident was detected at 18:31 UTC on Thursday.

Withdrawals are suspended. Law enforcement and onchain security firms are involved, attacker addresses flagged. Cold wallets and the bulk of platform assets, the exchange says, were untouched.

CEO Gracy Chen says the full amount falls within Bitget's User Protection Fund โ€” currently sitting above $464M. Hourly updates promised; a full root-cause report due within 24 hours.

How exactly the wallets were compromised? Still under investigation โ€” and Bitget isn't speculating until it knows.

๐Ÿ’ธ The Coinbase impersonator who stole $16 million

Ronald Spektor, 23, called Coinbase users pretending to be exchange support, warned them of a hacker, and guided them into moving funds to a wallet he controlled. Classic social engineering โ€” $15,944,000 taken from roughly 100 victims across the US.

The money dissolved through exchanges into cash and gift cards; much of it went to crypto gambling. Spektor's own messages admit he lost $6 million at online casinos. He also ran a Telegram channel bragging about the thefts โ€” apparently unbothered by irony.

Blockchain investigator ZachXBT named him in November 2024. He pleaded guilty to all 31 counts; the judge sentenced him to four to 12 years over prosecutors' objection. Restitution: nearly $16 million. Some of the money is still missing.

๐Ÿ”“ North Korea's favourite pastime?

Crypto exchange Bitget lost $351.6 million on Thursday โ€” attackers pushed straight through its hot and warm wallets, no forged requests, no stolen private keys. Cold storage stayed safe.

CEO Gracy Chen went live on X shortly after:

"We've identified IP addresses matching VPN choices of a certain DPRK group. The pattern looks very much like what they did before."

Worth noting: North Korean hackers have already taken an estimated $2 billion in crypto in 2025 alone, including the $1.5 billion Bybit heist the FBI formally attributed to Pyongyang. Withdrawals remain suspended; some funds recovered, amount undisclosed.

๐Ÿ’ธ Bitget goes quiet as $183 million walks out the door

Bitget, one of the world's larger crypto exchanges, appears to have been hacked. On-chain analysts at Bubblemaps and Arkham tracked $183 million in ETH, USDT, USDC, AVAX, BNB, and XAUT draining from the exchange's wallets into a single new address over about an hour Thursday.

The first move: address 0xe410โ€ฆ swapped $19.67M in USDT0 for 7,111 ETH in six minutes, paying 5% above market โ€” freezable stablecoins out, decentralized ETH in, fast.

User withdrawals are blocked. Bitget has said nothing. Back in 2023 the exchange boasted a $300 million protection fund for exactly this scenario โ€” now we find out if it's real, per Decrypt.

๐Ÿ’ธ 23 years old, Brooklyn, $16 million โ€” 12 years in prison

Ronald Spektor called people, posed as a Coinbase security rep and told them their account had been hacked โ€” move your funds to a safe wallet, now. Nearly 100 people believed him. The money was laundered through exchanges, crypto swaps and gift cards.

A New York DA sentenced him to 12 years, plus $16 million in restitution and $500,000 in forfeitures.

WhiteBIT puts social engineering at 41% of all crypto incidents last year. Criminals are done targeting exchanges โ€” they're coming straight for people.

Coinbase will never call you. If the call feels urgent โ€” that's the scheme.

๐Ÿ’ธ Asia claims half the global crypto adoption chart

Chainalysis's 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index: 9 of the top 20 countries are Asia-Pacific โ€” Japan, South Korea, India, Thailand, China, Indonesia, Australia, Vietnam, Philippines. Half the ranking, one region.

Bitget darkened the mood: $351.6M in unauthorized transfers, cold wallets intact, loss covered by its $464M+ Protection Fund.

๐Ÿ’ธ Tether, $84M, and a bank with some explaining to do

Tether โ€” the issuer behind $184B in USDT โ€” has been pulled into a DOJ civil forfeiture case targeting Capstone, a Montana payments firm allegedly moving hundreds of millions for Tether and Bitfinex without a licence, via EQIBank. Some $84M in Capstone's accounts is now frozen.

Tether confirms it banked with EQIBank โ€” but the funds there were 0.034% of group assets. A rounding error with a federal footnote.

Whether any of this touches USDT holders? The spokesperson didn't say, per Cointelegraph.

๐Ÿ’ก Quantum-safe Bitcoin just got five times cheaper

Last month StarkWare mined the first-ever quantum-resistant Bitcoin transaction on mainnet โ€” no hard fork, but a steep GPU bill: around $320 each, because a valid hash appears roughly once in 70 trillion attempts.

One week of open competition later: $67. Down 80%.

The leaderboard is AI-dominated โ€” Anthropic's Opus 5 and Fable 5.1 on top, GPT-6 Astra, Grok 4.6, and Kimi close behind. A key benchmark jumped from 146 M to 820 M+ candidates per second on a stock RTX 4090.

StarkWare cautions that $67 is an estimate, not a price, and a soft fork remains the proper fix. But seven days and minus 80% is a hard number to argue with.

๐ŸŽฎ The world's first official Minecraft hotel is coming

Minecraft World โ€” the themed zone at Chessington World of Adventures Resort in the UK โ€” just got two announcements at once: the world's first official Minecraft hotel, and the first-ever Minecraft rollercoaster.

The hotel is called Minecraft World Hotel; the ride, Escape the Nether. Both are set to open in 2027, confirmed by Merlin Entertainments and Mojang Studios at Minecraft LIVE.

Concept art already paints a picture: wooden houses, Creepers, TNT blocks, a Nether-themed dining area โ€” plus interactive adventures, block-built playscapes and themed retail. Everything from the game, except you can't hit Escape this time.

๐Ÿ’ธ $950 million "forex pool" โ€” not much forex in it

Cash FX Group spent years promising investors their money was managed by expert traders and AI, delivering up to 15% weekly. The algorithm, it turns out, was mostly just spending their deposits.

The CFTC sued the company and three individuals in a Florida federal court, alleging a classic Ponzi: $950 million raised for supposed forex trading, almost none done, new money recycled to pay fictitious profits to earlier participants. Real losses: at least $406 million.

The extra detail that stings โ€” Cash FX ran on multilevel marketing. Participants didn't just lose money. They recruited the next round themselves. Enthusiastically.

๐Ÿ’ธ $318k frozen, $387 million gone

Bitget, a major crypto exchange, lost around $387 million in one of this year's biggest hacks โ€” Lazarus Group is the prime suspect. Circle and Tether moved fast, freezing a linked wallet holding ~99,990 USDC and ~218,023 USDT, roughly $318,000 total.

Not fast enough. The attackers had already swapped everything freezable into ETH โ€” an asset no issuer can touch at the contract level. Other exploiter addresses still hold 63,000+ ETH, entirely out of reach.

That's 0.08% recovered. The oldest argument in crypto โ€” how permissionless is an asset one phone call can freeze? โ€” is back on the table.
