📌 Binance

On the 6th of February the Malta-based exchange, Binance, opened trading for BNB/USDS and BTC/USDS trading pairs. The move comes following last Thursday’s news that the exchange would start accepting Visa and MasterCard for crypto payments. In other news concerning Binance, speculation has mounted over an announcement of a possible future partnership with Ripple to use its cross-border payment platform, xRapid.

📌 QuadrigaCX

QuadrigaCX exchange created a lot of buzz this past week.

The Canadian crypto exchange went offline last week, leaving $190 million to its customers’ funds in limbo after the death of CEO Gerald Cotten. Based on multiple testimonies, Cotten was the only person with access to the exchange’s cold wallets, where most of the funds were stored. According to the latest news QuadrigaCX has asked for a 30-day stay of proceedings — which will end on Mar. 7 — to search for the lost money.

If the keys are not found, the lawyers representing QuadrigaCX are considering selling the company in order to satisfy the debts.

There is a lot of speculation and rumours surrounding this exchange. Stay tuned for the updates regarding the matter!

📌 Mt.Gox

On the 5th of February, leaked data revealed that Kobayashi, the trustee for the rehabilitation proceedings of Mt.Gox exchange, liquidated large amounts of BTC and BCH on the trading platform BitPoint in the Spring 2018. Initial reports estimated the sell-off at just under 35 billion yen ($318.5 million).

Еxperts are sure that the so-called “dumpening” of the crypto holdings by Kobayashi may have impacted bitcoin prices across last year. However, at this early stage, it is crucial to keep in mind that these preliminary reports have not yet conclusively determined how the coins were sold.


In related news, Bitcoin business incubator CoinLab filed a 1.7 trillion JPY ($16 billion) claim against Mt. Gox, based on a photo of the filing document posted on Reddit on Feb. 1. The photos purports to show the bank transactions on Tuesday, documenting the payments in Japanese yen from BitPoint to the account of the Mt. Gox trustee, Nobuaki Kobayashi.

📌 Some more key facts/updates to know about the QuadrigaCX case

▪️It is a well known fact that Cotten signed his last will 12 days prior to his death (in November 2018), designating his wife as a sole beneficiary and executor of his estate.

▪️A cryptocurrency analyst, James Edwards investigated publically available transactions of the exchange and concluded in his report that he could not manage to detect cold wallet reserves for QuadrigaCX exchange.

📌 Huobi

▪️Major global crypto exchange Huobi has reported a 100 percent growth in trading volume in 2018 over the previous year, 2017: the company increased its staff from 400 to more than 1,300, with 15 offices in 12 countries and regions.

▪️In a developing story, the United States-based partner of Singapore-headquartered crypto exchange Huobi, is launching fiat-crypto trading services (with initial support for three USD-crypto trading pairs).

📌 BitHumb

The most popular Korean based crypto trading platform Bithumb officially launched an over-the-counter (OTC) trading desk under the Ortus brand.

📌 BitFinex

On the 9th of February, Hong Kong-based cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex became inaccessible to all its users for a little over two hours. They notified their customers in a tweet that the platform had temporarily gone offline and a bit later announced that the website was up and running with full functionality. The majority of observers connects this event with the fact that crypto markets saw major gains and considers Bitfinex’s maintenance as being conducted intentionally.

📌 Binance

On the 12th of February Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao announced the launch date for a testnet version of Binance’s new decentralized exchange. According to the announcement, the launch is planned for the Feb. 20 along with the public release and collecting feedbacks from the users.

📌 Some general news

▪️Since the beginning of the year, digital currency exchanges have reportedly registered lower trading volumes, marking new lows not recorded since 2017.

▪️New data shows that United States traders are the most active across major crypto exchanges, according to a Feb. 4 tweet from data analytics firm DataLight.
📌 QuadrigaCX’s Case Updates

For the second week, QuadrigaCX’s crisis remains one of the most extensively discussed topics in the whole crypto world. Let’s run through the key updates for the case:


▪️ It has transpired that on February 6, 2019, Quadriga negligently transferred 103 bitcoins (approximately $468,675) to Quadriga cold wallets which the Company is currently unable to access. The discovery was revealed in the report made by audit company Ernst & Young.

▪️ On the 14th of February the Nova Scotia Supreme Court was supposed to choose the law firm which would advocate for QuadrigaCX’s clients. Currently the exchange owes them around $260 million CAD ($196 million). However, a Canadian judge has delayed a decision on legal representation for the customer of the exchange.

📌 Coinbase

Past week has been productive for major United States crypto exchange Coinbase.

▪️ On the 13th of February Coinbase provided $30,000 reward for the reported critical bug on their system. Coinbase is running a four-tier Bug Bounty system on HackerOne platform based on the severity of the bug: $200 for low, $2,000 for medium, $15,000 for high, and $50,000 for critical impact.The report hasn’t been revealed to the public. However, Coinbase spokesperson confirmed that the vulnerability has already been fixed.


▪️ According to Coinbase’s official announcement made on the 12th of February, their users can now back up their private keys on Google Drive or iCloud.

▪️ Henceforward, Coinbase customers are also able to send their BSV balance to an external wallet. However, Coinbase representatives mentioned that the exchange still does not offer services for buying or selling BSV on its platforms.
📌 Mt.Gox

On the 12 of February the former CEO of Mt.Gox exchange Mark Karpeles disproved the claims of Brock Pierce regarding his resumption of the exchange and compensating all its creditors. The announcement was made in a private conversation with CoinTelegraph, the full article can be found here.

📌 Binance

On the 14 of February Binance CFO Wei Zhou claimed in an interview with CNBC that the crypto exchange Binance remains a profitable business even in the bear market.

📌 Coinsquare

Despite the dumping market, Canadian crypto exchange Coinsquare has acquired Stellar, which became the second big deal in 90 days. Stellar positions itself as “an open-source, decentralized protocol for digital currency to fiat currency transfers which allows cross-border transactions between any pair of currencies.”

📌 BitMax

A Singapore based crypto exchange BitMax announced that they finished public testing and launched margin trading this week. If you haven’t read our research about the exchange, feel free to check it in CER Blog.

📌 Coinbase


▪️ The Shift Bitcoin (BTC) debit card, which was used by Coinbase users to spend BTC via a Visa debit card, announced the closure of the program in a Feb. 18 post on Reddit . The Shift team did not provide the exact reasons for the service retirement and specified that the service will be shut down on April 11, 2019. The cards will remain totally functional until the deactivation date.

▪️ On Feb. 19 Coinbase acquired blockchain intelligence platform Neutrino, which is supposed to help the exchange “achieve their mission of bringing the open financial system to the world”. The acquisition is intended to prevent thefts, hacks and identify suspicious transactions, along with adding more features and cryptocurrencies to the platform.

▪️ On Feb. 19. Coinbase added support for Bitcoin Cash (BCH) to its Coinbase Wallet, while mentioning that “the new wallet update with Bitcoin Cash support will roll out to all users on iOS and Android over the next few weeks.” It should be recalled that In August 2018, Coinbase Wallet was presented as a rebranding of the exchange’s open source decentralized app (DApp) browser and wallet, formerly called Toshi.


📌 QuadrigaCX


▪️As it turned out, Gerald Cotten, may have stored the exchange’s private keys on paper in a safety deposit box, as he mentioned this scheme in an interview on the “True Bromance Podcast” in February 2014:


Cotten said: “Essentially we put a bunch of paper wallets into the safety deposit box, remember the addresses of them. So we just send money to them, we don’t need to go back to the bank every time we want to put money into it. We just send money from our Bitcoin app directly to those paper wallets, and keep it safe that way."

▪️ On Feb. 19, Justice Michael Wood of The Supreme Court of Nova Scotia rendered a decision that Miller Thomson and Cox & Palmer Canadian law firms will represent customers of cryptocurrency exchange QuadrigaCX in upcoming proceedings.


📌 Binance

▪️ On Feb. 18 cryptocurrency exchange Binance’s education portal reached the top three most well-known and trendy products on Product Hunt platform. Binance Academy’s first public appearance occurred in last December and was introduced as a cryptocurrency educational course with information on Bitcoin (BTC) and the cryptocurrency industry in general.

▪️ Binance DEX testnet is already available for customers. In this regards, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao stated the following:

“Binance DEX is a decentralized exchange with a decentralized network of nodes, where you hold your own private keys and manage your own wallet. With Binance DEX, we provide a different balance of security, freedom and ease-of-use, where you take more responsibility and are in more control of personal assets.”


📌 Coinmama


▪️ Israel-based crypto brokerage Coinmama officially announced that they suffered a major data breach affecting 450,000 of its users.

▪️ On informing all their customers, Coinmama recommended that all potentially affected users should reset their passwords upon login and make sure that they are completely unique and robust.

▪️ Despite the fact that the data breach impacted not only Coinmama, but also approximately 24 companies and a total of 747 million records outside the crypto sector, the hack represents the second high-profile system compromise in the industry this year.

📌 OKEx

▪️ The world’s third-largest crypto exchange by trade volume, Malta-based OKEx has announced the listing of four new margin trading pairs: Bitcoin SV, QTUM, DASH, and NEO against Bitcoin or Tether on margin, with a 3x leverage option.

📌 Huobi Korea

▪️ According to the announcement made on the 21st of February Huobi Korea, the South Korean branch of the world’s sixth largest crypto exchange, has recently strengthened its anti-money laundering (AML) protections. The measures were taken to meet the requirements and adjustments of the Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC).

▪️ The company claimed that it examined its deposit and withdrawal procedures along with fiat-to-crypto oversight. Huobi Korea will also carefully analyze all suspicious transactions. The company will be regularly modernizing their fraud detection system to avoid all the types of fraud schemes.

📌 Binance

▪️ Binance Charity Foundation (BCF) launched a pilot blockchain-based lunch program in African schools called “Lunch For Children” in the capital of Uganda, Kampala.


▪️ According to the program conditions, the organization is set to provide two meals a day during the full year of 2019 to more than 200 students and school staff.

▪️“Lunch For Children” program was initially disclosed during Binance Blockchain week in Singapore last January; the pilot in Uganda is a part of a more global campaign supporting millions of students in schools across several countries, including Rwanda, Kenya and Ethiopia.

📌 QuadrigaCX

▪️ According to the official report provided by Ernst & Young on Feb. 20, QuadrigaCX exchange has sent all its remaining crypto assets from hot wallet to EY for further audit and examination.

▪️ The transferred amount included 51 Bitcoin (BTC), 952 Ethereum (ETH), 822 Litecoin (LTC), 33 Bitcoin Cash (BCH), and 2,033 Bitcoin Gold (BTG); a sum worth roughly $410,000 at the current rate.

General News

📌 Zhao Dong, a reported Bitcoin billionaire in China, predicts the crypto spring will only come in 2020, while crypto summer will not arrive until 2021.

📌 According to a new study from investment platform eToro, 43 percent of the interviewed millennial online traders have more faith and trust towards crypto exchanges, than to the traditional stock markets.

📌 An American venture capital investor Tim Draper mentioned in his interview with American Financial News TV channel Fox Business that in 5 years only criminals will continue using fiat “because they catch everybody who is trying to use Bitcoin.” The billionaire investor has also mentioned that he believes cryptocurrencies will become universally widespread in the near future.
