This week, Pam Bondi testified before the House Judiciary Committee. It was quite a clown show, but something interesting happened…

Congress had been given access to the unredacted files through individual DOJ logins. The system logged their searches, which I guess is normal protocol, any secure federal system handling sensitive material is going to track activity, but Bondi chose to bring it up.

During the hearing she highlighted Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s search history. She didn’t have to do that, it was deliberate, and the reaction from Democrats, including Jamie Raskin was immediate; accusations of spying, abuse of power and outrage.

If you give lawmakers access to something as explosive as the Epstein files, and you quietly monitor what they search for, you gain insight. You see which names they type first. You see whether they are casting a wide net or zeroing in on specific individuals and you identify patterns.

To casually show that search history in a public hearing, feels like a message to me: we can see what you’re looking for.

I can’t help wondering whether giving access and logging it was more than just routine protocol.
Was it simply about security and chain of custody? Or was it also understanding who in Congress is interested in which names inside those files?

Were they searching broadly for evidence?

Were they checking connections?

Were they typing in their own names?

The fact that Bondi chose to surface that information tells me this was signaling; we know what you searched for, we know were your connections lie, we know what drives you…

And when the outrage focuses more on the logging than on the contents of the files themselves, that tells me something too.
