Saint Valentine lived in the third century and was brought before the court for his evangelisation of Christianity. He rejected false idols and preached Jesus Christ to the Emperor. After much discussion, the Emperor was converted to Christianity and repented of his slaughter of the Christians. The pagan mayor of Rome then took Saint Valentine to another judge, of whom he gave sight to his blind child and thus this judge, too, repented and believed. At one point, Saint Valentine fasted and prayed and the idols of the temple smashed to pieces. The Emperor went back on his word, believing he would look weak before his citizens, and had the Saint tortured and beheaded on this day in 268 AD. The reason why Saint Valentine is considered the patron saint of lovers is because he once saw a couple arguing, he took a rose from his garden that he was tending, gave it to them and told them to reconcile their love for one another. Through his intercession, their love was immediately restored. May he intercede for us all

St. Agatha Lin (d. 1858) was a martyr and a Chinese saint. She was a catechist and a headmistress, and she was among the first to convert the Miao people. Her parents had engaged her to a man when she was a child, but they consented to cancel the marriage since she had given her life to God. Her father left her enough money to allow her to purchase a home that doubled as a chapel and school. She spent her life as a virgin committed to God. She was sentenced to death during a raid after being identified as a Christian. She was decapitated and died as a result.
