It’s officially here — Champei Sar 70!

After 9 years and 80 on-farm trials, Champei Sar 70 (CPS 70) is the result of a collaboration between the Cambodian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and the Australian Government. CPS 70 was developed from award-winning Cambodian rice variety, Phka Rumduol and is named after Cambodia and Australia’s celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2022.

CPS 70 is non-seasonal and resistant to floods and drought. It can be harvested in just 3 months and grown 2-3 times a year, increasing production, processing and incomes.

Ambassador Whyatt and H.E. Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries kicked off the first harvest of CPS 70 at CARDI.
Developing and improving rice varieties is crucial to Cambodia’s economic and climate resilience. Australia is pleased to continue its support of the Cambodian agriculture sector through the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development.

(Khmer in the link: https://bit.ly/3ne0VkY)

Australia has been a strong supporter of Small and Medium-size Enterprise (SME) development in Cambodia with a focus on women led enterprises. Recently, Cambodia Women Entrepreneurs Association organised a Women Entrepreneur Products Exhibition to showcase local products made by Cambodian women with the aim to empower and support women in business.

Through our new economic development program, the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED), we are supporting access to markets and enabling trade and investment policies for inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Agri-food Industrial Park (AIP) has tremendous potential for Cambodia. According to the Cambodian government’s 2022 feasibility study, the AIP is expected to contribute USD 5.1 billion to the Cambodian economy by 2045, and create up to 100,000 new jobs, over half of which will be for women.

Recently, Australia’s flagship economic development program, CAPRED, organised a study visit to Australia for the AIP Committee and Secretariat members. They learnt about government support, public, industry and research linkages for ecosystem building, and the challenges of establishing AIPs.

Since its establishment in 1999, the Government-Private Sector Forum (G-PSF) with the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), have been providing an open and inclusive space for government and businesses to discuss challenges and solutions together.

Australia has been a long-standing supporter of the G-PSF since the early 2000s and worked with the World Bank to develop processes and tools required to make it successful.

We were pleased to meet with H.E. Sok Chenda Sophea, Secretary General of CDC, to introduce our flagship program, CAPRED, and discuss our planned support for the G-PSF.

CAPRED will support the G-PSF to become a sustainable, results oriented platform for public and private sector engagement.
