Cambodia and Australia Launch Online Platform for Enterprise Registration and Licensing

Great news for Cambodian enterprises! Cambodia and Australia have jointly launched a new digital platform for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), handicraft, and industry owners to register and license their businesses.

The launch ceremony, held in Phnom Penh on 27 June, showcased the online, user-friendly portal, developed by the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation and Australia with support from the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) program.

The platform will:
✅ simplify registration and licensing processes
✅ reduce the need for in-person visits
✅ improve processing times
✅ make payments easier and more transparent

The initiative aims to boost Cambodia's economic growth by helping formalise the SMEs, handicraft, and industry sectors, which make up more than 70% of jobs in country. This will help increase access to finance and markets for businesses and attract foreign investment.

On Wednesday 3 July, Foreign Minister Wong announced the appointment of Mr Derek Yip as Australia’s next Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Ambassador-Designate Yip is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Assistant Secretary of the East Asia Political Branch.

Cambodia and Australia Working Together to Increase Investment

Australia is partnering with the Cambodian Government to foster a robust business environment and attract investment to Cambodia’s provinces.

This will help drive economic growth by diversifying not only the country’s primary investment sectors but also its investment locations – beyond key economic hubs such as Phnom Penh.

With support from the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) program, training was recently delivered by the Council for the Development of Cambodia to 280 Municipal-Provincial Investment Sub-Committee members from six provinces.

The training focused on the roles of the sub-committees under the amended Law on Investment and other regulations which now give provinces the authority to approve investment projects valued up to US$5 million, offer investment incentives and settle investment disputes.

Australia empowers female water engineer to achieve Cambodia’s water supply goals

Australia is supporting the Center for Sustainable Water to train the next generation of water engineers through the Youth Leadership in Clean Water Supply Action program.

Meet Ms Yos Chantharoth, a recent graduate and water engineer who is passionate about improving Cambodia's clean piped water access.

She is one of 10 water engineers participating in the Youth Leadership in Clean Water Supply Action program. The program prepares young water engineers for employment and helps foster their commitment to addressing water issues within their own communities.

Through an intensive training program and field visits, Ms Tharoth has improved her leadership skills and knowledge of clean water supply. She is now interning at the Bek Chan water supply station in Kandal province to gain practical experience in clean water supply operation.

Australia Workshops Cambodian Enterprises on New Digital Public Service Portal

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) account for 70% of jobs in Cambodia. However, only about 13% are formalised, hindering productivity, access to finance and markets, and government support.

Australia, through the CAPRED program, collaborated with the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) to develop a digital public service portal for SMEs, handicrafts and industry to apply for licenses. This platform helps foster business formalisation, improve enterprise capacity and productivity, and promote economic growth and increased foreign direct investment.

To ensure the online platform’s applicability and usability, CAPRED and MISTI conducted a Consultation and User Testing workshop with representatives from SMEs, handicrafts, and industries. The resulting inputs and feedback were integrated into the platform’s development ahead of the June 2024 launch.

Australia Invests in Cambodian Engineers for a Greener Future
