Gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI) are crucial to Cambodia achieving resilient, inclusive and sustainable economic growth. This means providing equitable economic opportunities for all – especially women, people with disabilities, ethnic minorities and other marginalised groups.
Australia’s flagship economic development program, CAPRED, has GEDSI at the heart of its strategy. CAPRED works to address underlying social norms that hinder inclusion, to promote women as business owners and leaders, and encourage GEDSI-transformative policies and practices.
CAPRED recently hosted a GEDSI workshop with 30 representatives from civil society and non-government organisations focused on supporting people with disabilities, Indigenous groups, gender equality and other social safeguards. Participants learned about CAPRED’s GEDSI approaches and exchanged experiences and good practices to promote GEDSI in Cambodia.

Australia and Cambodia work to reduce costs while boosting competitiveness in agriculture
Machine spare parts are vital, but costly – accounting for about 80% of agricultural machinery maintenance costs in Cambodia. While agricultural machinery is exempt from taxes in Cambodia, spare parts remain taxed. This greatly increases farmers' maintenance costs and hinders the uptake of agricultural technology.
Australia’s Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) program, in partnership with Swisscontact Cambodia, is working with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to identify key agricultural machinery spare parts and equipment to be exempt from taxes and tariffs.
Representatives from government ministries, civil society and agricultural machinery import companies provided valuable feedback on this process during a technical consultation workshop on 30 May.
This initiative could result in an estimated 20%-30% reduction in maintenance costs for farmers and agricultural service providers, making agricultural machinery more affordable and boosting Cambodia’s agricultural competitiveness.

The training aims to enhance the participants' skills and knowledge in monitoring, evaluation, and results measurement to improve the effectiveness and impact of CAPRED’s interventions. Additionally, the consultancy aims to build the team’s capacity on systems development programming, including how to plan, measure, and communicate systemic change.

Australia is supporting the Center for Sustainable Water to equip the next generation of water engineers through the Youth Leadership in Clean Water Supply Action program.
This program provides 6-month internships at private water companies for 10 water resources engineering students or recent graduates from the Institute of Technology of Cambodia.
Young water engineers gain skills and experience working alongside private operators to improve water quality, supply and service delivery.
