Australia’s Special Envoy for Southeast Asia, Mr Nicholas Moore, this week met with some of Cambodia’s leading female entrepreneurs, during a breakfast roundtable. Women entrepreneurs are vital to driving Cambodia’s economy. It was an opportunity for Mr Moore to hear about their insights that would help guide the development of Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.

Mr Moore also visited the LY LY Food Industry Co., LTD. and learnt about local business experiences. Founded in 2002 by Her Excellency Okhna Keo Mom, Ly Ly has grown from a start-up food operation with just 20 employees, to a thriving business today employing 250 Cambodians, many of whom are women.

Have you ever wondered where your treated piped water comes from?

Earlier this month, Australia's flagship economic development program, Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) organized a field trip for 30 water and environmental engineering students and lecturers from the Institute of Technology of Cambodia to visit two water treatment plants in Kampong Cham province.

The students and lecturers saw raw water pump stations, infrastructure, and the operation of water treatment plants and transmission pumps. They gained a better understanding of the legal, technical, and financial issues in water supply, as well as the importance of gender equality, disability and social inclusion, and climate resilience integration in the sector. Australia and CAPRED are committed to further engaging more young water engineers, especially graduates to join in our efforts to develop clean water services in Cambodia.

Shout out to our new rice variety Champei Sar 70 (CPS70)! Australia, together with Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, launched CPS70 in April this year, with the rice seeds distributed to the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, αžŸαž αž–αŸαž“αŸ’αž’αžŸαŸ’αžšαžΌαžœαž’αž„αŸ’αž€αžšαž€αž˜αŸ’αž–αž»αž‡αžΆ Cambodia Rice Federation - CRF, agriculture cooperatives, and farmers. These are now being planted and you’ll soon be able to buy the harvested rice from your nearby markets.

CPS70 is the proud result of a collaboration between Australia and the Cambodian Agricultural Research and Development Institute. It is a new rice variety crossbred from five-time award-winning Cambodian rice variety, Phka Rumduol. It is non-seasonal and can be harvested within just 3 months and due to its high resilience, can be grown 2-3 times a year, increasing annual production volumes and incomes.
In 2022, Cambodia exported 637,004 tons of milled rice valued at USD 414 million, and 3.4 million tons of unmilled rice worth USD 1.2 billion, according to Cambodian Rice Federation.

In this video, a farmer from Banteay Meanchey, shares her interest in growing CPS70. She expresses that she usually leaves her seven-hectare farm empty for half a year, but by planting CPS70, she hopes to get more crop cycles annually.

πŸ“£ Over the last decade, Australia has supported Cambodia to provide sustainable, quality electricity services⚑️across the country. Almost 99 percent of rural villages are currently connected to the main electricity grid.

Currently Australia is a contributing partner with the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Electricity Authority of Cambodia, Electricity of Cambodia to connect the last 1 percent of rural villages to reliable electricity from renewable energy sources.

The #CAPRED infrastructure team and national and local authorities visited Sambour district to discuss establishing a solar farm to provide mini off-grid electricity. The team spoke to local authorities and the villagers about the project and potential locations of the solar farm.
