Did you know that Cambodia’s economy is actually driven by micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs)? From the lort cha (rice noodle) vendors to agriculture cooperatives —these businesses make up an incredible 99.8% of all businesses in Cambodia.

Today, on World MSMEs Day, we acknowledge the tremendous global contribution MSMEs make to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Australia is working with the Cambodian Government and development partners to support MSMEs in the clean water, energy, agriculture mechanisation, and agro-processing sectors through the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED).

Through CAPRED, 14 Cambodian female entrepreneurs recently visited Australia to learn, share ideas, and build professional networks with like-minded entrepreneurs, government agencies and businesses.

Did you know Australia is supporting the Cambodian Government to develop an Agri-food Industrial Park (AIP)?

The park will increase Cambodia’s agricultural value-added products and exports. It is expected to contribute USD 5.1 billion to the Cambodian economy by 2045, and create up to 100,000 new jobs, over half of which will be for women.

The AIP will be a hub for agrifood-processing, research and development, capacity building, and is being developed to provide an inclusive, safe workplace and environment, especially for women and marginalised employees.

In April this year, the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) program organised a visit for Cambodia’s AIP Steering Committee members to Melbourne and Perth to see different Australian Agri-food Industrial Parks and learn about AIP ecosystems including food innovation, enabling business environment and government policies in Australia.

Australia’s Special Envoy for Southeast Asia, Mr Nicholas Moore, this week met with some of Cambodia’s leading female entrepreneurs, during a breakfast roundtable. Women entrepreneurs are vital to driving Cambodia’s economy. It was an opportunity for Mr Moore to hear about their insights that would help guide the development of Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.

Mr Moore also visited the LY LY Food Industry Co., LTD. and learnt about local business experiences. Founded in 2002 by Her Excellency Okhna Keo Mom, Ly Ly has grown from a start-up food operation with just 20 employees, to a thriving business today employing 250 Cambodians, many of whom are women.
