Australia is supporting Cambodia’s Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation to establish a Water Development Fund to help Cambodia achieve its goal of providing universal access to safe, clean, and secure water to all Cambodians by 2030.

Through our new economic development program, the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED), Australia supported MISTI to bring together representatives from the Cambodian Water Supply Association, various ministries and development partners to help design the Fund. Discussions will help inform the draft of fund’s Sub-decree and Standard Operating Procedure, which are the key legal instruments for the establishment of the Water Development Fund.

CAPRED works across agriculture and infrastructure services with gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI) and climate resilience integrated into all activities.

Australia’s concluded program supported Rural Electricity Enterprises (REE) on various projects across Cambodia to expand the electricity network to accelerate access to reliable electricity in rural areas. Through this initiative, over 140,000 rural Cambodians can enjoy the benefits of a reliable power supply, including new economic opportunities created in these areas.

The Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) is Australia’s current development program. It aims to help Cambodia achieve sustainable, inclusive and resilient economic growth with gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI) and climate resilience integrated into all activities. CAPRED is working with the Ministry of Mine and Energy and other stakeholders to connect Cambodia’s remaining 1% off-grid villages to sufficient electricity.

It’s officially here — Champei Sar 70!

After 9 years and 80 on-farm trials, Champei Sar 70 (CPS 70) is the result of a collaboration between the Cambodian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and the Australian Government. CPS 70 was developed from award-winning Cambodian rice variety, Phka Rumduol and is named after Cambodia and Australia’s celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2022.

CPS 70 is non-seasonal and resistant to floods and drought. It can be harvested in just 3 months and grown 2-3 times a year, increasing production, processing and incomes.

Ambassador Whyatt and H.E. Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries kicked off the first harvest of CPS 70 at CARDI.
Developing and improving rice varieties is crucial to Cambodia’s economic and climate resilience. Australia is pleased to continue its support of the Cambodian agriculture sector through the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development.
