Australia invests in Cambodia's engineers for a greener future 💡🌍

Lysorng Oeng, an electrical engineer from Electricité du Cambodge, recently visited Australia as part of a delegation from Cambodia.

During the visit, Lysorng engaged with Australia's renewable energy sector, exploring innovative sites showcasing Australia’s commitment to the clean energy transition. These included solar farms, rooftop solar installations and pumped hydroelectric power stations. Discussions also covered energy markets, the integration of variable renewable energy sources, Cambodia’s battery capacity and weather forecasting technology tailored to Cambodia's needs.

Inspired by Australia's approach to renewables, Lysorng is determined to drive positive change for Cambodia's energy future.

Supported by Australia's CAPRED program, this initiative aims to achieve sustainable solutions for Cambodia's energy transition.

Knowledge sharing on Australia’s rooftop solar journey

Since 2000, millions of Australian homes and business have been incentivised to install rooftop solar panels, which now contribute 11.2% of Australia's electricity supply.

Australia, through the CAPRED program, recently hosted a Cambodian delegation to learn about Australia’s progress and challenges in integrating additional distributed energy resources to achieve its net zero target.

Participants, including representatives from Cambodia's Ministry of Mines and Energy Cambodia, Electricity Authority of Cambodia and Electricité du Cambodge, heard firsthand from Aiden Gould, a homeowner in New South Wales. Mr Gould is one of the more than 3.68 million Australians who have switched to solar in a move towards sustainable living.

After installing his 18-kilowatt rooftop solar and battery system, Mr Gould not only benefits from the power generated by his solar panels but also earns income by feeding excess electricity back into the grid.

Australia is committed to sharing this learning as part of ongoing support for Cambodia to achieve its ambitious goals of 70 percent renewable energy by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050.

Australia supports Cambodia to bolster gender equality

Through our Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) program, we were proud to be a co-sponsor of the recent launch of the Neary Rattanak VI Strategic Plan 2024-2028.

The Strategic Plan aims to advance gender equality and inclusion in Cambodia through six priority strategies, including women’s economic empowerment and women and climate change, from climate adaptation to community resilience.

Presided over by Minister of Women's Affairs H.E. Dr Ing Kantha Phavi, and the Australian Embassy’s Ms Amber Cernovs, the launch drew more than 500 participants.
