Australia partners with Cambodia to bolster Agri-food SMEs

Australia and Cambodia joined together to launch a new Food Innovation Partnership to support Cambodia’s agri-food small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) develop new products, meet food safety standards and improve their market reach.

The partnership is funded by the Cambodian Government through Khmer Enterprise, and the Australian Government through the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED). The three workstreams of the partnership are:

✅Agri-Food Innovation Summit

Promoting gender equality is the right thing to do and the smart thing to do.

That’s why it is at the centre of Australia’s support for Cambodia and why gender equality can help Cambodia achieve its economic and social goals.

For example: enterprises. Nearly 90% of all businesses in Cambodia are micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and over 60% of these are owned by women.

Removing barriers and unlocking their potential will drive economic growth. Australia is working with the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI) to support MISTI’s Gender Mainstreaming Action Plan 2023-2028.

The Action Plan is a roadmap for advancing gender equality in MISTI and the private sector.

The Food Innovation Fund is now open and accepting applications.

This new initiative offers technical and financial support to agri-food SMEs on product innovation, market development, and food safety standards. The fund is the result of a partnership between Australia’s flagship economic development program, the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) and the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Khmer Enterprise.

Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion Lens Investment Specialist

CAPRED is seeking a GEDSI Lens Investment Specialist who will work to support CAPRED’s efforts in integrating GEDSI lens strategies into its investment portfolio. The specialist will play a key role in identifying and evaluating investment opportunities that promote GEDSI and address GEDSI constraints as experienced by CAPRED and its partners, the Government, private companies/business associations and organisations.

The GEDSI Lens Investment Specialist will work in alignment with the CAPRED GEDSI Strategy. This role will report to the GEDSI Lead, working closely with the GEDSI and Stakeholder Engagement Advisor (GSEA) and GEDSI Policy Advisor (GPA), ensuring complementarity and strong coordination across approaches and interventions. They will also work collaboratively with Facility team members, to identify potential investment opportunities that align with CAPRED’s GEDSI lens objectives.

Australia supports Cambodia to boost agri-food exports

Despite being a potential driver of Cambodia’s future economic growth, less than 10% of Cambodia’s major crops are currently processed for export.

To help Cambodian agri-food small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) overcome challenges in processing and exporting their products, the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED) program recently organised a visit to Australia for Cambodian agribusiness and government representatives to learn about Australian import regulations and the art of pitching products to international audiences.

Request for Proposal for Development of Cambodia FTA Portal

CAPRED seeks to engage a consulting firm to provide technical implementation services for developing an online FTA tool for the Ministry of Commerce in Cambodia. The key objective is to develop a user-friendly online Cambodia FTA Portal that will provide information on tariff rates, import market, documentation, and rules of origin (ROO) for goods traded between Cambodia and its partners.

The portal will feature information based on all the bilateral, regional, and multilateral FTAs signed by Cambodia. The portal will be available in both English and Khmer.
