Sask. woman can't access dialysis treatment close to home because clinic is just across Man. border
Maureen McBratney, who suffered extreme kidney failure and was saved by medical intervention, now requires regular dialysis treatment to stay healthy. Despite having a dialysis clinic only 20 minutes from her home, she's unable to go there. Instead, she's forced to reside in Saskatoon, six hours away from her family and the comfort of her home in Denare Beach, Saskatchewan. She finds her current situation to be illogical and a significant hardship on her life and her family.๐ข

Canada could lead the world in oil production growth in 2024
Canada's oil production is projected to increase by approximately 10% in the coming year, making it one of the largest contributors to the global supply surge.
Currently, the country produces around 4.8 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil, and this figure is expected to grow by approximately 500,000 bpd, reaching about 5.3 million bpd by the end of 2024, as reported by S&P Global Commodity Insights. This would represent a historical high for Canadian oil production.
Much of this growth is anticipated to be driven by Alberta's oilsands, although increases are also expected in Western Canada and at offshore facilities near Newfoundland and Labrador.
Kevin Birn, S&P's chief analyst for Canadian oil markets, noted, "Half a million is a lot. It's bigger than what many countries produce in the world."
The significant rise in oil output over the next 12-14 months is partly due to lower production levels this year, resulting from extensive maintenance requirements at certain oilsands facilities.

Security worries mount in Canada as ex-Hamas chief calls for protests. What to know
A call for demonstrations across the Muslim world in support of Palestinians, initiated by Khaled Meshaal, a former Hamas leader, has raised concerns among Jewish organizations in Canada. This call followed a recent surprise attack by Hamas on Israel, leading to Israeli airstrikes in Gaza and the possibility of a ground offensive. Hamas, classified as a terrorist organization in countries like Canada and the United States, has sparked global demonstrations by both pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian groups. Meshaal's appeal, which also seeks support from neighboring countries against Israel, is causing security concerns in Canada.๐

Mask Mandates Back in Hospitals Across Canada Just Months After Being Removed
Healthcare facilities across the country, including hospitals, are reinstating mandatory mask policies, citing the respiratory virus season as the reason.
In British Columbia, medical masks became mandatory in public health care facilities as of October 3. Health care workers, volunteers, visitors in patient care areas, and contractors must wear masks. Patients usually do not have to wear masks, and long-term care residents are only required to wear them if directed by a healthcare worker.
In Nova Scotia, mask mandates returned to health care facilities a month after they were lifted on September 10.

Supreme Court rules environmental impact legislation largely unconstitutional
Canada's top court has delivered a significant judgment, with a majority opinion declaring Ottawa's Impact Assessment Act (IAA), previously known as Bill C-69, largely unconstitutional. The IAA, in effect since 2019, permits federal regulators to evaluate the environmental and social consequences of resource and infrastructure projects. It has faced controversy, particularly among conservative politicians in Alberta, who often referred to it as the "no more pipelines act." This ruling comes from a "reference case," where provincial and federal governments seek advisory opinions from the courts. While not immediately invalidating the law, such a decision by the Supreme Court of Canada is typically regarded as binding by governments.๐

Foreign nationals could be allowed to leave Gaza on Saturday, Canadian officials say
Global Affairs Canada has received information from Egyptian officials suggesting a potential opportunity for Canadians stranded in Gaza to depart on Saturday through the Rafah Gate, the sole border crossing between Gaza and Egypt. The proposed time for evacuation is between noon and 5 p.m. local time. However, it's important to note that this plan to open the crossing has not been definitively confirmed or finalized, as per Julie Sunday, an assistant deputy minister with Global Affairs Canada (GAC).๐

Uber Warns of Price Hikes, Longer Wait Times After Toronto's Cap on Ride-Share Licences
Uber is unhappy with Toronto City Council's decision to temporarily freeze new ride-share licenses for up to a year. The company warns that this could result in higher prices and longer waiting times for riders. The decision, voted on October 11, aims to tackle greenhouse gas emissions, traffic congestion, and transit-related issues, but Uber argues that it may hurt riders and drivers who rely on ride-sharing.

Canadians who were stranded in Israel due to the conflict with Hamas were finally reunited with their families. Kinneret Butterfield-Morrison and her brother Yaron Butterfield were among the passengers on an Air Canada "rescue" flight that landed in Toronto. They had been trying to leave Israel following the attack by Hamas and initially expected to be evacuated on a Canadian military plane but didn't receive updates from the government. Fearing being stuck in Israel, they took the initiative to board the Air Canada flight, reuniting with their family in Canada.
