Family of 19-year-old who died after being shot by police searching for answers
A 19-year-old international student, Afolabi Stephen Opaso, originally from Nigeria and studying at the University of Manitoba, died after being shot by police in Winnipeg during a reported mental health crisis. Police responded to a report of a possibly armed man acting erratically at an apartment building, encountering Opaso armed with two knives, ultimately shooting him. Opaso was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died. Air Canada notched the worst on-time performance among 10 large airlines in North America in 2023, according to a new report.
The country's biggest carrier landed 63 per cent of its flights on time last year, placing it last among the continent's 10 largest airlines, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics firm.
That means roughly 140,000 planes rolled up to the gate more than 15 minutes after scheduled arrival.

New information spurs investigation into Vancouver police’s actions in 2022 death
The Independent Investigations Office of BC is conducting a new investigation into a man's death outside St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. The man, released from the hospital, died from self-inflicted wounds in May 2022. Vancouver police initially notified the IIO, and an initial investigation concluded on June 3, 2022.
However, new information from the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner prompted a reexamination starting on Oct. 31, 2023. The IIO is now exploring potential connections between police actions or inaction and the man's death.

Mother serving life sentence for murdering 8-year-old daughter dies in B.C. prison
A woman serving a life sentence for killing her eight-year-old daughter has died in custody at the Fraser Valley Institution in Abbotsford, B.C.
Lisa Batstone, 50, died on Jan. 1, according to a news release from the Correctional Service Canada (CSC). The cause of death has not been released.
Batstone was found guilty of second-degree murder four years ago for the 2014 suffocation death of daughter Teagan Batstone. Teagan's body was found in the back of Batstone's car.
During a high-profile trial, evidence was presented supporting that Batstone had carried out the killing to spite her ex-husband Gabe Batstone.
At sentencing, Supreme Court Justice Catherine Murray said the court needed to send a strong message to warring parents who might use their children as weapons.

Rogers to increase price of some wireless phone plans
Canadian telecom companies Rogers Communications Inc. and Bell are set to increase the cost of some wireless phone plans. Rogers will raise prices for certain wireless phone and internet plans, affecting customers, including those of its subsidiary Fido.
