Canadian universities aim to boost plant-based options on menus in 2024 to meet student demand
Universities across the country are introducing more plant-based food in their dining halls, something institutions say is an ongoing demand from students for more variety and a larger push for more sustainable practices.
At Western, students are the driving force behind the increase in vegan and vegetarian meals. The university set a goal of having a 40 per cent plant-based menu at all dining halls by the new year, but it hit the target โ and at some points even surpassed it โ this year. A fully vegan outlet will open in 2024, and the school wants to reach a 50 per cent target in 2025.

Halifax Explosion survivors heard on tapes lost for decades๐
During a recent move, Rick Howe spotted a cassette tape he hadn't seen in years. When he slid it into his vintage Marantz recorder, the sounds carried him back half a century โ and the voices took him back more than 100 years.๐
Howe was a cub reporter when he moved to Halifax in 1978. He was a radio news junky, so when CJCH host Dave Wright opened his Hotline show to people who'd survived the Halifax Explosion, he started recording. "It ended up with three hours of riveting historical context. People who were actually there, experiencing it as it happened and telling us what was going on," Howe says.โค๏ธ

Common front and Quebec reach tentative agreement over pay for public sector workers
The common front of unions, representing around 420,000 public sector workers in Quebec, has reached a tentative agreement with the government, primarily focused on salaries. While working conditions had been previously settled, negotiations on salaries had stalled. This tentative deal is seen as a significant development after months of slow progress at the negotiation table. The common front had been considering an unlimited strike in the new year if no agreement was reached, which would have affected public schools. The deal, offering a five-year collective agreement, awaits approval from union members, which could take up to three weeks. Additionally, the teachers' union (FAE) in Quebec, which had been on an unlimited strike for over a month, reached a tentative deal covering both salary and working conditions, potentially ending the strike that has affected 368,000 students since November 23. The FAE's negotiating council will decide whether to put the deal to a vote by union members.

Swan River installs cameras, buys patrol car as retail, property crime runs rampant
The town has been ramping up security measures in the last few months in hopes of curbing its rising crime rate, said Gade, who's also the reeve of Swan Valley West and the president of Swan Valley Chamber of Commerce. Gade, like other business owners in town, is fed up with the retail and property crime โ often committed by repeat criminals โ that has been plaguing the community of about 4,000.
Using a $40,000 town grant and some money from business owners, the town bought security cameras that can monitor what people are doing and where they're going. It also bought a security patrol vehicle, which hit the road in September, using $10,000 from the town.

B.C. Supreme Court pauses legislation banning drug consumption in public spaces, citing 'irreparable harm'
The B.C. NDP government's legislation to ban all drug use in a wide range of public spaces has been suspended by the province's Supreme Court.
The B.C. Restricting Public Consumption of Illegal Substances Act, passed early November, has now been paused for three months pending a review.
The province had banned illegal substance use from all public parks to sports fields and beaches, as well as close to any workplaces, skate parks, pools, transit stops, residences or playgrounds โ even within six metres of "a place to which the public has access" and "a prescribed place."

'Only one story': Father of man killed by drunk driver speaks as OPP announce 10,000 charges this year
Robert Carreau emotionally recounts the tragic day in November 2020 when his son, also named Robert, was killed by a drunk driver. The younger Robert, a headmaster at a Muskoka private school, was struck while on a morning run, leaving behind a wife and four children. The guilty driver, a 57-year-old man, received a 30-day jail sentence, 12 months probation, and a two-year driving ban for driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit. Carreau, now president of the Toronto chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada, shares his son's story to raise awareness and prevent similar tragedies, emphasizing the significance of addressing the approximately 1,700 impaired driving incidents in Canada each year.

Dangers of thin ice across Canada as winter temperatures hover above freezing point
A balmy winter has taken Canada by storm, with people across the country dealing with a warmer holiday season - and resulting in tragedies where people have fallen through ice in Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta. The Lifesaving Society says while most drownings take place during summer months, about a third of them happen between October and May.
On Thursday, daily highs across the country hovered near freezing or above zero. For outdoor winter recreational activities on frozen rivers, lakes, and ponds to be considered safe, sustained freezing conditions are required.

Expert says number of police shootings in Canada 'spectacularly unrelenting'
The family of a woman shot during a wellness check in Edmonton criticizes the police, claiming her death was unnecessary. The incident reflects a broader trend of increasing police shootings in Canada, with 85 incidents in 2023, 41 fatal. Criminologists emphasize the need for more police training and restraint, while the RCMP union argues officers face rising dangers amid the mental health crisis.
Concerns rise, especially in Alberta, where police shootings saw a 90% increase from 2020. The majority of victims are young men, and over 60% of cases involving race identified Indigenous, Black, or other people of color. Calls for reform and long-term societal solutions persist.
