Canadian universities aim to boost plant-based options on menus in 2024 to meet student demand

Universities across the country are introducing more plant-based food in their dining halls, something institutions say is an ongoing demand from students for more variety and a larger push for more sustainable practices.

At Western, students are the driving force behind the increase in vegan and vegetarian meals. The university set a goal of having a 40 per cent plant-based menu at all dining halls by the new year, but it hit the target — and at some points even surpassed it — this year. A fully vegan outlet will open in 2024, and the school wants to reach a 50 per cent target in 2025.

Truck carrying groceries to La Ronge overturns over Christmas weekend

Virginia Despins, a resident of Air Ronge, Sask., was headed to Prince Albert down Highway 2 for her last minute Christmas shopping when she came across a semi-truck that rolled over in the ditch.

The truck carrying groceries to the Lake Country Co-Op in La Ronge, located about 215 kilometres north of Prince Albert, overturned on Saturday. No injuries were reported.

During a recent move, Rick Howe spotted a cassette tape he hadn't seen in years. When he slid it into his vintage Marantz recorder, the sounds carried him back half a century — and the voices took him back more than 100 years. 😃

Howe was a cub reporter when he moved to Halifax in 1978. He was a radio news junky, so when CJCH host Dave Wright opened his Hotline show to people who'd survived the Halifax Explosion, he started recording. Woman killed in Val-des-Monts collision

A 33-year-old driver is dead after her car crashed in Val-des-Monts, Que., on Tuesday evening. 

The vehicle rolled over several times before it went off the road at the intersection of route du Carrefour and montée Paiement, according to a press release from the MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais police, who responded to a call that came in around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Police said firefighters from Val-des-Monts helped to remove the driver from her vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
