He estimates he's cut the hair of more than 50 people in the park on Saturdays. The outdoor setting hasn't stopped him from forming "intimate bonds" with clients, who open up about their lives, struggles and faith.

"It's like a barber shop — we sit around and have conversations about everything," Alfred said. "It's really nice to have someone who went through something really hard to trust a guy with clippers and blades. "How I get paid is in conversations."

The founder of Canadian men's clothing retailer Harry Rosen Inc. has died at 92. Harry Rosen opened his first made-to-measure menswear store on Parliament Street in Toronto in 1954 and ran the company for 51 years until his son, Larry Rosen, became chairman and CEO.

In a statement, Larry confirmed his father's passing on Sunday, saying he "willed his business into existence one client at a time" and that "his passion for menswear and fashion was contagious."

Universities across the country are introducing more plant-based food in their dining halls, something institutions say is an ongoing demand from students for more variety and a larger push for more sustainable practices.

At Western, students are the driving force behind the increase in vegan and vegetarian meals. The university set a goal of having a 40 per cent plant-based menu at all dining halls by the new year, but it hit the target — and at some points even surpassed it — this year. A fully vegan outlet will open in 2024, and the school wants to reach a 50 per cent target in 2025.

Truck carrying groceries to La Ronge overturns over Christmas weekend

Virginia Despins, a resident of Air Ronge, Sask., was headed to Prince Albert down Highway 2 for her last minute Christmas shopping when she came across a semi-truck that rolled over in the ditch.

The truck carrying groceries to the Lake Country Co-Op in La Ronge, located about 215 kilometres north of Prince Albert, overturned on Saturday. No injuries were reported.

Halifax Explosion survivors heard on tapes lost for decades😍

During a recent move, Rick Howe spotted a cassette tape he hadn't seen in years. When he slid it into his vintage Marantz recorder, the sounds carried him back half a century — and the voices took him back more than 100 years. 😃

Howe was a cub reporter when he moved to Halifax in 1978. He was a radio news junky, so when CJCH host Dave Wright opened his Hotline show to people who'd survived the Halifax Explosion, he started recording. Provincial police have charged a Moroccan man after a series of bomb threats were made across the province and linked to similar incidents in Europe. 

The charges stem from threatening phone calls made on Nov. 1, 2023, to schools and other public facilities, said Brooklyn Harker, a spokesperson for the Ontario Provincial Police.

Woman killed in Val-des-Monts collision

A 33-year-old driver is dead after her car crashed in Val-des-Monts, Que., on Tuesday evening. 

The vehicle rolled over several times before it went off the road at the intersection of route du Carrefour and montée Paiement, according to a press release from the MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais police, who responded to a call that came in around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Police said firefighters from Val-des-Monts helped to remove the driver from her vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
