โAlways encourages peopleโ: Man who died in N.W. Calgary shed fire remembered by relative โฐ๏ธ
Three people, including 35-year-old Trent Rider Hunter, died in a shed fire in northwest Calgary. Hunter, remembered as a kind father and powwow singer, was seeking help for addictions and struggling with housing.
His brother-in-law emphasized the need for more support for people facing homelessness and addiction challenges. Advocates noted that the incident highlights gaps in current efforts to assist vulnerable populations in Calgary, with over 29% of the 2,700 people experiencing homelessness being unsheltered, according to the latest count.

Ottawa minor charged as RCMP allege connection to possible terrorist activity against Jewish people
A youth in Ottawa has been charged with terrorist-related offenses targeting Jewish people. The suspect, whose age prevents further information disclosure, allegedly instructed someone to carry out a terrorist activity against Jewish persons. Additionally, they are charged with facilitating a terrorist activity by communicating instructional material related to an explosive substance. Reports indicate a rise in hate crimes against Jews and Muslims in Canada since October 7, linked to events in the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Ottawa's Mayor Mark Sutcliffe expressed shock over the alleged planned attack, citing a recent rise in antisemitism in the city. He commended the RCMP and Ottawa Police Service for averting the planned event through strong investigative work. Mayor Sutcliffe affirmed continued police patrols around synagogues and Jewish institutions. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, representing Jewish organizations in Canada, expressed gratitude that no one was hurt but emphasized the ongoing real threat to the community.

Road salt project tracking toxicity in Ottawa's waterways ๐ง
Earlier this month, volunteers with the Ottawa Riverkeeper made their way to the Ottawa River, in front of the NCC River House. They arrived with buckets and devices to measure the water's conductivity โ how easily it carries an electrical current.
That's because the chloride ions that make up road salt don't break down easily when the salt dissolves in water. Higher conductivity usually means there's more chloride ions in the water, which can be toxic to aquatic life.

This B.C. MP is taking a 4,500-km train ride to try and improve passenger rail in Canada
NDP transportation critic and MP Nathan Cullen plans to embark on a series of train rides from Toronto to Smithers, B.C., to build support for the Rail Passenger Priority Act. The proposed legislation aims to give passenger trains priority over cargo trains on the same rail line, reversing the current situation where passenger trains often face delays.
The bill seeks to amend the Canada Transportation Act and addresses the challenges of Via Rail renting track time from freight companies, causing disruptions, especially in regions with increased train traffic, like Bachrach's riding connecting Prince Rupert and Smithers.

Community leaders worry about increased radicalization risk after arrest of youth in Ottawa
Recent concerns in Ottawa surround an arrest related to instructing a person to carry out a terrorist activity against Jewish individuals, with details undisclosed due to the individual's age. The RCMP has highlighted a troubling trend in online radicalization, arresting five youths for terror-related offenses since the summer. Community leaders and experts express worry that the Israel-Hamas conflict may contribute to an increase in antisemitic and Islamophobic hate, potentially leading to youth radicalization. Bannerman Park's biggest tent city happened 131 years ago in the wake of a stunning fire
In the aftermath of the Great Fire of 1892 in St. John's, Newfoundland, a tent city emerged in Bannerman Park to provide temporary shelter for the thousands of people left homeless. The fire, exacerbated by a series of errors and unfortunate conditions, destroyed two-thirds of the city, leaving nearly 11,000 residents without homes. The displaced individuals sought refuge in Bannerman Park and other open spaces on the outskirts of the city. Although the tent city provided immediate relief, authorities worked to address the housing crisis by implementing long-term solutions. Today, a tent city has once again appeared in Bannerman Park, drawing attention to contemporary homelessness and housing challenges.

Adele Sorella found not guilty in 3rd trial for deaths of 2 daughters ๐จโโ๏ธ
A Quebec Superior Court judge has acquitted Adele Sorella of killing her two daughters in 2009, marking her third trial. The previous convictions were overturned due to claimed errors in jury instructions. The case involved sensational details, including the discovery of the girls' bodies and Sorella's car crash.
Defense argued Sorella was in a dissociative state during the deaths. The absence of direct evidence linking her to the deaths was a key defense point, countering prosecutors' claim of her using a hyperbaric chamber to suffocate the girls. This trial was expedited without a jury, presenting testimony from the second trial.

As the holidays approach, Canadians say they're being tipped over the edge
Cathy Khalil recently tipped $5 on an $18 box of doughnuts in Ottawa, emphasizing that her tipping is a personal choice rather than an obligation. However, experts note a trend of people resisting tip requests accompanying debit or credit card purchases, especially during the holiday season as Canadians spend on gifts and festive items.

Judge orders slow down of Edmonton homeless camp removals
In Edmonton, a court battle regarding the dismantling of homeless encampments concluded with an agreement that allows for a slower removal process. The Court of King's Bench Justice Kent Davidson granted an interim injunction with conditions for removing encampments at eight sites in central Edmonton. The agreement was reached among lawyers for the Edmonton Police Service, the City of Edmonton, and the Coalition for Justice and Human Rights, an advocacy group for people living in tents in the city. While the encampments will still be dismantled, the new parameters aim to slow down the process, providing some relief to those affected. The Coalition for Justice and Human Rights filed an emergency application to address the removal plan, which initially targeted between 118 to 135 makeshift shelters deemed high risk by the Edmonton Police Service. The decision sparked backlash from social agencies, activists, and politicians, leading to protests outside the Edmonton Law Courts.

Ottawa police's Rideau Centre hub may not open to public until at least 2025 ๐ฎโโ๏ธ
Earlier this year, the OPS announced its future "neighbourhood operations centre" would give officers a space to meet and collaborate with community groups. The 3,000-square-foot facility will be located in the Rideau Centre.
According to a report presented Monday at the Ottawa Police Services Board (OPSB), the OPS will take possession of the space in March 2024, with a target of being fully operational by spring 2024. But the facility won't be open to the public for at least 12 to 18 months after that, police chief Eric Stubbs told media ahead of the board meeting.

All new cars, SUVs, light trucks sold by 2035 must be zero-emission vehicles
Canada has released final regulations requiring all passenger cars, SUVs, crossovers, and light trucks sold by 2035 to be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). The new rules, called the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, aim to ensure the availability of ZEVs in the market and reduce wait times for electric vehicles. Interim targets include making ZEVs constitute at least 20% of all car sales by 2026 and at least 60% by 2030. In the third quarter of 2023, electric vehicles represented 12.1% of new vehicle sales, according to industry officials.

Statistics Canada reports record population growth, more than 430,000 in Q3
Canada's population experienced exceptional growth, surpassing 430,000 during the third quarterโthe highest quarterly increase since 1957. According to Statistics Canada's October 1 estimates, the total population now exceeds 40.5 million. The growth in the first nine months of 2023 has already exceeded the total growth in any previous full year, including the record set in 2022. This remarkable increase is attributed to international migration, with approximately 313,000 non-permanent residents, including work and study permit-holders and refugee claimants, arriving in the country from July to September.
