With all signs pointing to rising rates of respiratory viruses in Ottawa, Ottawa's top doctor is urging older adults to get their updated COVID-19 and flu jabs.

Flu signals have been rising to match similar trends in COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). While it takes about two weeks for vaccines to take their full effect, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Vera Etches said it's not too late to get caught up before holiday gatherings.

Deadly restraint of Soleiman Faqiri by Ontario jail guards a homicide, inquest finds

The jury at a coroner's inquest declared Soleiman Faqiri's 2016 death in an Ontario jail a homicide, though it holds no legal consequences. Faqiri, suffering from schizoaffective disorder, died after being restrained, pepper-sprayed, and left shackled face down. The jury made 57 recommendations to prevent future deaths in provincial jails. Faqiri's family, who had sought accountability for years, welcomed the verdict.

Despite no criminal charges against guards in previous police investigations, the homicide classification could prompt a reexamination of the case. The jury emphasized the need for change in jail protocols and mental health support.

National pharmacare plan is in limbo as health minister calls pending deadline 'arbitrary'

Health Minister Mark Holland signaled that the Canadian government is unlikely to meet the year-end deadline imposed by the NDP for passing pharmacare legislation. The legislation is a condition of the supply-and-confidence agreement that maintains the Liberals in power until 2025. Talks are ongoing with NDP MP Don Davies, the party's health critic, to craft legislation for a national drug coverage plan. The NDP's deadline, set in the supply-and-confidence agreement, may not be met, and the likelihood of passing contentious pharmacare legislation before the Christmas break is low. Holland emphasized the importance of getting the legislation right rather than rushing to meet arbitrary deadlines.

Mining claims jump in northern Ontario's Ring of Fire as EV battery interest grows

Mining claims in northern Ontario's Ring of Fire area have increased by 30% compared to last year, according to data analyzed by the Wildlands League. The region is considered crucial for Ontario's electric vehicle battery industry. However, local First Nations argue there hasn't been proper consultation about mining projects on their territories. The Wildlands League reported over 31,000 registered claims covering more than 626,000 hectares, with more than half held by Juno Corp. The surge raises concerns about the impact on peatlands, watersheds, and wildlife habitats. Critics demand consultation and criticize Ontario's free-entry mining system.

B.C. drug smuggler fled to India to avoid 15-year prison sentence

Canadian authorities are seeking a "red notice" from Interpol for the arrest of Raj Kumar Mehmi, a Surrey man convicted of smuggling cocaine into Canada. Mehmi, sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison, allegedly fled to India to avoid imprisonment. A Canada-wide warrant has been issued, and the "red notice" would prompt foreign police to arrest him. Mehmi was caught in 2017 smuggling 80 kilograms of cocaine at the Peace Arch border crossing.

Despite a scheduled sentencing hearing in January, he boarded a flight to New Delhi in October 2022 and has not returned. The RCMP estimates the street value of the seized drugs at $3.2 million.

Heiltsuk man, granddaughter seek more discipline for Vancouver police officers who wrongfully handcuffed them

Maxwell Johnson and his granddaughter are urging British Columbia's police complaint commissioner to reopen disciplinary proceedings against Vancouver police officers, Mitchel Tong and Canon Wong, who wrongfully handcuffed them in 2019. The incident, sparked by suspicions over their government-issued Indian status cards, led to a human rights settlement and a cultural apology ceremony. Despite officers' suspension, Johnson seeks a second reparation ceremony in Bella Bella, emphasizing the disrespect to his family, culture, and community. The emotional toll is evident in Johnson's plea: "If the constables don't come to Bella Bella and apologize properly, the hole in me and our community will persist."

More people aware of residential school harms but work still needed, report finds

A report from the University of Manitoba, University of Victoria, and Toronto Metropolitan University, in collaboration with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, indicates increased public awareness of past harms from residential schools in Canada. The Canadian Reconciliation Barometer report, based on a poll conducted by Leger in August 2022, surveyed 3,174 people (1,034 Indigenous and 2,140 non-Indigenous) across six regions. The survey found that 90% of non-Indigenous respondents and 94% of Indigenous respondents had read or heard about residential schools, up from 65% and 87%, respectively, in 2021. The report suggests progress in reconciliation awareness but emphasizes the need for continued education on the lasting effects of residential schools.

Ontario vastly expanding where booze can be sold in move to modernize alcohol retail market

Starting in 2026, Ontarians will be able to buy beer, wine, cider, and seltzers at more locations, including convenience stores, big box outlets, some gas stations, and supermarkets, in a significant overhaul of alcohol sales. Premier Doug Ford's changes aim to modernize the market and provide the "largest expansion of consumer choice and convenience since the end of prohibition almost 100 years ago."

The government will end its Master Framework Agreement with The Beer Store, allowing for around 8,500 new locations to sell low-alcohol products. The LCBO will remain the sole retailer for high-alcohol spirits. The move follows Ford's 2018 election promise and seeks to support local Ontario producers. Health groups have expressed concerns about potential negative health outcomes.

Judge dismisses latest bid by driver who caused Humboldt Broncos crash to stay in Canada

A judge rejected truck driver Jaskirat Singh Sidhu's bid to avoid deportation after causing the deadly Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018. Sidhu, sentenced to eight years for dangerous driving, pleaded guilty to the crash that killed 16. Despite parole, deportation was recommended. Sidhu's lawyer argued officials overlooked his clean record and remorse, seeking a second review. The judge acknowledged the tragedy's impact but stated the court couldn't alter the consequences.

Destroy street check data, says OHRC, after report on anti-Black racism by Toronto police

The Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has released its final report and blueprint after a six-year inquiry into anti-Black systemic racism within the Toronto Police Service (TPS). The report recommends that Toronto police destroy historical street check data, provide greater transparency on officer discipline, and implement a distinct policy or procedure on racial profiling. The OHRC's findings indicate systemic racial discrimination, racial profiling, and anti-Black racism within the interactions between Black people and Toronto police services. The report outlines gaps in policies and procedures at TPS and the Toronto Police Service Board, highlighting the over-representation of Black people in arbitrary street checks, enforcement actions, arrests and charges, use of force, strip searches, and out-of-sight driving offenses. The report emphasizes the need for systemic change and eradication of anti-Black racism within the police force.

Public Health Agency of Canada confirms 6th death from cantaloupe salmonella outbreak

The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed a sixth death in connection with a salmonella outbreak linked to contaminated cantaloupes. As of now, there have been 153 lab-confirmed cases, with 53 people hospitalized. The source of the outbreak is identified as Malichita and Rudy brand cantaloupes, and the affected individuals reported consuming cantaloupe before falling ill. Many of those affected are adults in long-term care facilities, retirement homes, or children in daycare, putting them at higher risk for severe illness. The outbreak is also impacting numerous U.S. states. The recalled cantaloupes were sold in Canada between October 11 and November 14, and consumers are urged to check and discard any recalled items from their refrigerators and freezers. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating a similar outbreak in the United States.
