Village steps up to help bakery owners through health challenges
Myroslava Mykytyn and Isaac Fouchard, owners of the Black Walnut Bakery in Ottawa's east end, have received overwhelming support from the community after learning that two of their children have a rare disorder called Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS). Their six-year-old son Caleb and four-year-old son Elias have the genetic disease, which causes physical and intellectual disabilities, as well as extremely dry skin. The community organized a fundraiser that raised $16,254 to help the family with the cost of mobility devices for the two boys. Despite the challenges, the couple expressed gratitude for the support and the lifeline the bakery provides to the community.

Many Canadians experience hearing loss and don't know it. Here's how to prevent and treat it 🦻
37 per cent of Canadian adults who have hearing loss. Many more Canadians over age 40 have high-frequency hearing loss and aren't aware of it. Experts say there are ways to prevent hearing loss in the first place.
It's essential for adults over the age of 30 to check their hearing every few years, and more frequently once you hit 50. You can get a hearing test from an audiologist. Experts recommend wearing earplugs whenever you're exposed to loud sounds, including concerts, moving the lawn or using power tools. Listening to music at high volumes can lead to hearing loss, and experts recommend using an app to limit the volume on your phone. Noise-cancelling headphones can also prevent unsafe listening, so that you don't need to turn your music up to compensate for a noisy environment such as a bus or subway.

Board of governors votes to keep Université de Moncton's name
The Université de Moncton has decided to retain its name, as voted by the board of governors after a years-long campaign by some Acadian groups to change it. The university, founded in 1963, faced controversy as the city of Moncton is named after Col. Robert Monckton, a British officer involved in the deportation of Acadians in 1755. The board concluded that changing the name was not a priority, with no new information presented. While some, including a citizens' committee, expressed surprise and desired more community consultation, others, like the student union president, felt the issue wasn't a top priority amid other concerns like housing.

City looks at moving parking fine, camera ticket disputes out of court 👮♂️
The City of Ottawa is looking hard at a system that would allow drivers to dispute parking and camera-issued tickets without going to court, but one lawyer worries it could lead to biased decisions.
Provincial law empowers municipalities to adopt an administrative penalties system, which handles certain by-law and camera-based offences in house instead of through judges or justices of the peace.

2 young boys dead, mother in critical condition after incident in Scarborough
Toronto Police's homicide unit is investigating an incident in a Scarborough apartment where two young brothers, aged 4 and 5, were found without vital signs. Their mother, 25, was critically injured, having fallen from a balcony. The boys' deaths are treated as suspicious, with autopsies pending. The police believe the mother's fall wasn't accidental, and while her injuries are serious, she is stable. The father reportedly passed away recently, and authorities are examining the family dynamic. The custodian described the family as previously happy, unaware of any issues. The investigation is ongoing.

Ottawa launches $13B dental-care program with kids and seniors first up for coverage
The Canadian federal government introduced a $13-billion dental VA-care plan covering routine dentistry costs. Initially focusing on children under 18 and select seniors, the plan aims to include all eligible low- and middle-income Canadians by 2025. The phased application process begins with seniors aged 87 and over this month, extending to other age groups in the new year.
The plan, replacing a previous interim program, targets households with incomes below $90,000 and provides coverage with varying co-pays based on income brackets. Health Minister Mark Holland sees it as transformative, offering dental coverage to nearly nine million Canadians without insurance. The application process will involve government-initiated mail invitations.

Canadians and Albertans aren't sold on Alberta pension, skeptical about $334B figure, poll suggests
A recent poll by the Angus Reid Institute conducted between Nov. 24 and Dec. 1 indicates that many Albertans are skeptical about the idea of the province establishing its own pension plan. The survey found that 48% of Albertans opposed leaving the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), while 36% supported the idea. Across the country, more than half of respondents in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Atlantic Canada also opposed the notion. The proposal garnered more support in Saskatchewan and Quebec, with 31% and 32% in favor, respectively. Quebec has had its pension plan since 1966.
The Alberta government had released a report in September, suggesting the province could receive a $334-billion asset transfer from the CPP in 2027 if it establishes its own plan. However, skepticism remains, with 51% of Albertans expressing concerns about being worse off under an Alberta Pension Plan, and only 31% believing they would be better off. The uncertainty surrounding the size of the asset transfer is a key factor contributing to skepticism among Canadians and Albertans. The Alberta Pension Plan consultations are currently on hold as the province awaits asset transfer figures from the Chief Actuary of Canada.

Deadly restraint of Soleiman Faqiri by Ontario jail guards a homicide, inquest finds
The jury at a coroner's inquest declared Soleiman Faqiri's 2016 death in an Ontario jail a homicide, though it holds no legal consequences. Faqiri, suffering from schizoaffective disorder, died after being restrained, pepper-sprayed, and left shackled face down. The jury made 57 recommendations to prevent future deaths in provincial jails. Faqiri's family, who had sought accountability for years, welcomed the verdict.
Despite no criminal charges against guards in previous police investigations, the homicide classification could prompt a reexamination of the case. The jury emphasized the need for change in jail protocols and mental health support.

National pharmacare plan is in limbo as health minister calls pending deadline 'arbitrary'
Health Minister Mark Holland signaled that the Canadian government is unlikely to meet the year-end deadline imposed by the NDP for passing pharmacare legislation. The legislation is a condition of the supply-and-confidence agreement that maintains the Liberals in power until 2025. Talks are ongoing with NDP MP Don Davies, the party's health critic, to craft legislation for a national drug coverage plan. The NDP's deadline, set in the supply-and-confidence agreement, may not be met, and the likelihood of passing contentious pharmacare legislation before the Christmas break is low. Holland emphasized the importance of getting the legislation right rather than rushing to meet arbitrary deadlines.

Mining claims jump in northern Ontario's Ring of Fire as EV battery interest grows
Mining claims in northern Ontario's Ring of Fire area have increased by 30% compared to last year, according to data analyzed by the Wildlands League. The region is considered crucial for Ontario's electric vehicle battery industry. However, local First Nations argue there hasn't been proper consultation about mining projects on their territories. The Wildlands League reported over 31,000 registered claims covering more than 626,000 hectares, with more than half held by Juno Corp. The surge raises concerns about the impact on peatlands, watersheds, and wildlife habitats. Critics demand consultation and criticize Ontario's free-entry mining system.

B.C. drug smuggler fled to India to avoid 15-year prison sentence
Canadian authorities are seeking a "red notice" from Interpol for the arrest of Raj Kumar Mehmi, a Surrey man convicted of smuggling cocaine into Canada. Mehmi, sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison, allegedly fled to India to avoid imprisonment. A Canada-wide warrant has been issued, and the "red notice" would prompt foreign police to arrest him. Mehmi was caught in 2017 smuggling 80 kilograms of cocaine at the Peace Arch border crossing.
Despite a scheduled sentencing hearing in January, he boarded a flight to New Delhi in October 2022 and has not returned. The RCMP estimates the street value of the seized drugs at $3.2 million.
