Poilievre says Conservatives' affordability focus unites party as Tories manage latest defection

The Liberals are one seat away from a majority after Conservative MP Michael Ma defected to their ranks, prompting Pierre Poilievre to emphasize party unity around affordability and deny leadership problems, while accusing Prime Minister Mark Carney of seeking a majority through backroom deals rather than an election.

Montreal police to 'increase vigilance' after mass shooting at Hanukkah event in Australia

Montreal police said they will increase their vigilance and visibility in areas where Jewish neighbourhood celebrations are taking place until the end of Hanukkah after a mass shooting in Australia.

Fifteen people were killed and at least 38 injured after two gunmen attacked a Hanukkah event at Sydney's Bondi Beach on Sunday. Australian authorities said it was a terrorist attack designed to target the Jewish community.

Following the deadly attack, Montreal police said in a written statement that they wished to "reassure the people of Montreal."

DND launches probe into leak of classified fighter jet data to CBC/Radio-Canada

The Department of National Defence has launched an internal investigation into the leak of confidential data from the technical competition between the two fighter jets vying to replace Canada's CF-18 fleet.

Previously unpublished data obtained by CBC/Radio-Canada last month showed the American-built Lockheed Martin F-35 had a considerable lead during the technical competition over the Gripen, manufactured by Sweden-based Saab.

The leak fuelled the ongoing debate over the government's decision to either proceed with the purchase of a full fleet of 88 F-35s, or instead acquire a mixed fleet of both F-35s and Gripens.

Flu circulating at 'sky-high' levels among kids, teens as experts brace for worsening wave of infections

Canada is seeing a sharp rise in influenza, with more than 20% of tests now positive nationwide, driven largely by infections among children and teens. The surge has been linked to the recent deaths of three young children in the Ottawa area, an unusually high number in a short time, according to health officials. The wave is being fueled by the H3N2 strain, which many children have little prior exposure to, increasing susceptibility. While this year’s flu vaccine may not be a perfect match, experts say it still significantly reduces severe illness and hospitalizations in children and stress that it is not too late for families to get vaccinated.

Canada's appeal dismissed in battle over fixing mould in Oneida grandmother’s home

The Canadian government has lost in court — again — to a First Nations grandmother fighting to fix extensive mould at her home on Oneida Nation of the Thames, near London, Ont.

The legal battle concerns Joanne Powless’s request for $200,000 through Jordan’s Principle for remediation work, which Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) denied, despite a doctor calling the service a "life-saving necessity" for Powless’s two grandchildren for whom she is the primary caregiver.

In a decision released Monday, the Federal Court of Appeal says ISC’s denial was unreasonable because it was neither justified, transparent nor intelligible. Worst of all, ISC failed to grapple with the potential consequences for the two young sisters with severe asthma made worse by mould, writes Justice K. A. Siobhan Monaghan.

Carney, Ford to sign a deal to reduce regulatory burden on Ring of Fire, speed up Ontario projects

Ottawa and Ontario are set to sign an agreement to streamline approvals for major projects by eliminating overlapping federal and provincial impact assessments under a “One Project, One Review, One Decision” approach. The deal aims to speed up infrastructure and mining projects, including roads to the Ring of Fire in northern Ontario. As part of the agreement, the federal government will align its assessment timeline with Ontario’s for the Ring of Fire roads, which First Nations plan to begin building in 2026. Supporters say the changes will significantly accelerate large-scale development across the province.

Canada's 2030 climate target far out of reach, according to Environment Canada data

Canada's legally binding climate target seems to be out of reach, new data released from Environment and Climate Change Canada suggests.

The department's greenhouse gas emission projections are a critical signal whether the country is on track to achieve its climate goals.

The report's projections show Canada will fall well short of its 2030 climate goal — just halfway to its target of a 40 to 45 per cent reduction below 2005 levels.

Crown withdraws murder charge against Toronto man who spent 23 years in prison

Prosecutors have withdrawn a second-degree murder charge against a man who spent 23 years in prison for the killing of a 10-year-old girl in 1989.

Ontario’s court of appeal set aside the conviction against Timothy Rees, 62, last month and ordered a new trial into the complex case, which includes recanted confessions, accusations of police conspiracy and mishandled evidence.

It came after two former federal justice ministers said a “miscarriage of justice” had likely occurred during Rees’s original trial more than 30 years ago.

Man faces attempted murder charge, 24-hour standoff with police ends after officer shot in Welland, Ont.

A 24-hour standoff in Welland, Ontario, ended Saturday morning with the arrest of 59-year-old Daniel Tronko, who now faces charges including attempted murder after a police officer was shot. The incident began Friday when police accompanied bylaw officials to address a fence blocking traffic sightlines at a former church used as a residence. Tronko barricaded himself inside and repeatedly fired at police, disabling remote cameras used during negotiations. The situation prompted school lockdowns and a shelter-in-place order, both later lifted. The wounded officer was treated and released with minor injuries.
