Alberta energy deal was 'the last straw,' says Guilbeault after cabinet resignation

Former environment minister Steven Guilbeault warned that Canada can no longer meet its 2030 climate targets after Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government rolled back key environmental measures in a new agreement with Alberta, prompting Guilbeault’s resignation. He said the deal — which includes a new bitumen pipeline and suspends major federal climate policies — undermines essential regulations he helped develop, and criticized Alberta Premier Danielle Smith for reversing renewable energy progress. Guilbeault, who learned of the deal through media reports, said it was the “last straw,” though he still supports Carney and will remain in the Liberal caucus, hoping his resignation serves as a wake-up call.

First Street Market ordered to close after cockroaches, 'unsanitary conditions' found: AHS

A Calgary food hall says it has been closed for the time being due to "pest activity" identified by Alberta Health Services (AHS).

First Street Market, located at 1327 1st St. S.W. in Victoria Park, was closed effective Nov. 28, according to an order issued by AHS.

The closure order says it is in effect for all vendors in the food hall.

The closure came after an "investigation identified pest activity in the market," a First Street Market spokesperson told CBC News in an emailed statement.

Is it illegal to spoil Christmas? Police in Ontario get complaints about anti-Santa signs

During Brantford, Ontario’s Santa Claus parade, police received multiple complaints after a homeowner along the parade route displayed signs saying “Santa is fake,” “Santa isn’t real,” and similar messages. About 30,000 people attended the parade, and the signs upset many families. Police spoke to the resident, who removed the signs, though officials noted the messages weren’t illegal because they were on private property. The police encouraged residents to keep the event festive and community-friendly.

Legault calls Miller a 'disgrace to all Quebecers' for his comments on French language

A day after being named federal culture minister, Marc Miller is drawing ire from several Quebec officials, including the premier of his home province.

Miller, who replaced Steven Guilbeault in cabinet on Monday, said Tuesday that the French language is precarious throughout North America, rather than saying it is declining in Quebec specifically, as the provincial government would characterize it.

“As a Quebecer, I’m pretty fed up with this debate that is generally identity-based,” Miller said in French during a scrum.

Calgary teen accused of using AI to sexualize photos of high school girls

A Calgary teen has been charged with several criminal offences after he allegedly used AI technology to sexualize photos of teen girls at several local high schools.

Investigators carried out a search warrant at the accused teen’s home on Nov. 13 and seized two cellphones, a tablet and a laptop, according to a release from the child exploitation unit (ICE) of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT).

The investigation started in October after ICE received a tip concerning child sex abuse materials being posted to social media.

It’s alleged the teen used AI to victimize teen girls who attended several different high schools in the Calgary area.

Police said they are not identifying the accused or the schools in order to protect the victims’ identities. The victims have been offered support services.

Alberta legislation would change citizen referendum rules, restrict political party names

The provincial government is proposing sweeping changes to citizen-led referendum questions that could put a stop to an active court case about whether it’s constitutional to ask Albertans if they agree with separating from Canada.

Bill 14, introduced Thursday by Justice Minister Mickey Amery, transfers powers from the chief electoral officer to the minister when deciding whether citizen petition initiatives should proceed.

It also includes an amendment to discontinue any court proceeding brought by the chief electoral officer.

Sask. introduces involuntary treatment legislation as fall sitting ends

Saskatchewan introduced the Compassionate Intervention Act, which would allow police or family to have people with severe addictions placed into treatment against their will if they are at serious risk. The bill creates a process for families to request court-ordered treatment, and lets law enforcement intervene in dangerous situations. People could be taken to special assessment centres, though their locations are still unknown. The government says the law will save lives, while the Opposition supports involuntary treatment only as a last resort and with protection of individual rights. The bill won’t be passed until at least spring.

Top court restores conviction of woman who tried to kill mother with insulin injection

The Supreme Court of Canada has restored a woman's conviction for attempting to kill her mother by injecting her with insulin.

In its decision, released Friday, the top court rejected the argument that the jury in the woman's trial should have been instructed on the distinction between attempted murder and aiding suicide.

In June 2019, a neighbour found the woman — a nurse identified only as B.F. due to a publication ban — her mother and B.F.'s 19-month-old daughter unconscious in their home. All three had been injected with insulin.

Emergency responders discovered five empty insulin pens at the scene, along with a handwritten note.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says courts should not be gatekeepers on independence questions

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith defended her new legislation that would stop a court review of a proposed independence referendum, arguing on her radio show that citizens shouldn't face “gatekeepers” like courts or election officials when trying to put questions on the ballot. Her comments followed a ruling by Justice Colin Feasby, who said an independence vote would violate the Charter, Treaty rights, and Alberta’s own referendum law, and criticized the government for trying to change the rules mid-process. Smith said the justice minister’s expanded authority to approve referendum questions supports democracy, while the court and chief electoral officer were improperly blocking citizen-led initiatives.

Criminal group linked to Ontario hospital shooting, Quebec homicide dismantled, police say

Authorities in Ontario and Quebec have dismantled a violent criminal network, arresting 13 people and laying more than 150 charges. Police say the group wasn’t a traditional gang, but a coalition of individuals from different areas who teamed up for profit-driven violent crimes. The alleged offenses include multiple shootings, a homicide investigation, and several armed robberies across both provinces in late 2024. Police described the attacks as brazen and dangerous, emphasizing the suspects’ disregard for public safety.
