Indigenous-led Red Dress Alert program must be implemented in Manitoba 'without delay': report

A new report urges Manitoba to pass legislation and launch an Indigenous-led Red Dress Alert system by June 2026, calling it essential to address the rising number of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. Based on extensive public engagement, the report stresses Indigenous control, cultural guidance, and clear protocols to ensure trust, accountability, and fast coordination among police, governments, and community agencies. Similar to an Amber Alert, the system would send urgent phone notifications when someone goes missing, with advocates saying the crisis demands immediate, coordinated action across all levels of government.

Classes resume at B.C. school after grizzly attack, with safety measures in place

A school in Bella Coola, B.C., has reopened with safety measures, five days after a grizzly bear attack on a group of students and teachers.
The search continued for the mother grizzly with two cubs thought to be involved in the attack, and the Acwsalcta School said in a statement on Monday that it was taking "additional steps and precautions" to ensure safety for all the students as it welcomes their return.
Students of the independent school run by the Nuxalk First Nation were not being allowed to leave the grounds, and the bus was doing door-to-door service in the wake of the attack on a group of about 20 people last Thursday that badly injured three pupils and a staff member.

Canada’s weather warning system has changed. Here’s how

Canada has updated its weather warning system to a new colour-coded model—yellow, orange, and red—based on expected impact and forecast confidence, while still issuing familiar alerts like thunderstorm, snowfall, rainfall, and wind warnings; special weather statements will remain in grey, and the change aims to make risks clearer and align Canada with international standards.

The Hudson Medical Centre serves about 11,000 patients, mainly English speakers, according to Dr. Tara McCarty, a family doctor at the clinic and one of its co-owners.

It is the only bilingual GMF — the French acronym for family doctor group — in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region, she says.

Latest fiscal update shows Alberta’s budget deficit holding steady at $6.4B

The outlook for Alberta's budget in its second-quarter update remains largely unchanged from the previously grim forecast provided in August.

Finance Minister Nate Horner estimates the government will finish the fiscal year with a $6.4-billion deficit, which grew by $1.2 billion from the original estimate provided in the 2025-26 budget, delivered in February.

It’s a similar picture to the one outlined at the end of the summer. The update cited softening oil prices for the growing deficit and said there has been a 30 per cent decline in natural resource revenue from last year.

Oil prices are expected to remain low, the update says.

Former Grade 8 teacher who sent nude images to students sentenced to 4 years

A former Grade 8 teacher in Ontario who pleaded guilty to sex crimes, after persuading students to exchange explicit selfies with her, has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Kelly-Anne Jennings, 41, stood in a Kawartha Lakes, Ont., courtroom Thursday as a judge delivered the sentence.

"The impact of having a child perform sexual acts on camera for the gratification of an adult is severe," Ontario Court Justice Nathan N. Baker said.

Elections Canada says protocol wasn't followed in Nunavik during federal election

Elections Canada says poor planning, weak oversight, and little consultation with Inuit communities caused major voting problems in Nunavik during the April 28 election. Staff shortages led to early poll closures, and many communities had no or limited voting services, leaving some residents unable to vote. Elections Canada has apologized and is working to address wider barriers faced by Indigenous voters.

A priest in Scarborough opened a food bank in her garage

When renovations at the Church of the Holy Wisdom in Scarborough threatened to shut down its food bank, Rev. Gerlyn Henry moved the entire operation into her own garage to keep it running. The food bank now serves about 300 people a week, using metal shelves and volunteers to run a three-hour weekly pop-up service. Henry felt closing would harm community members who rely on the food bank as an essential lifeline, many of whom come on foot. Volunteers say staying close to the original location was crucial. Although nearby residents needed reassurance, Henry’s home ultimately became the workable solution to keep the service going.

Alberta energy deal was 'the last straw,' says Guilbeault after cabinet resignation

Former environment minister Steven Guilbeault warned that Canada can no longer meet its 2030 climate targets after Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government rolled back key environmental measures in a new agreement with Alberta, prompting Guilbeault’s resignation. He said the deal — which includes a new bitumen pipeline and suspends major federal climate policies — undermines essential regulations he helped develop, and criticized Alberta Premier Danielle Smith for reversing renewable energy progress. Guilbeault, who learned of the deal through media reports, said it was the “last straw,” though he still supports Carney and will remain in the Liberal caucus, hoping his resignation serves as a wake-up call.
