1 dead, 1 in critical condition after REM train collision on Montreal's South Shore

Three young men were struck by a REM train near Du Quartier station on Montreal’s South Shore early Saturday. A 19-year-old died at the scene, a 22-year-old remains in critical condition, and another 19-year-old has been declared out of danger. Police say the group was trying to cross Highway 10 and the train tracks when the collision happened. The incident forced a temporary suspension of REM service between Brossard and Panama stations, but service was restored by mid-afternoon. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the fatal event.

Why Canada is winning the travel trade war with the U.S.

International tourism spending in the U.S. has fallen amid President Trump’s tariffs, divisive politics, and stricter border security, while Canada is experiencing a tourism boom driven by rising patriotism and its reputation as a safe, welcoming alternative. Industry experts say travelers are choosing Canada because U.S. barriers make visiting America less appealing, giving Canada a major advantage during ongoing trade tensions.

Vulnerable people could 'come out worse' after stay in 72-hour detox facility, advocate says

Advocates say the Manitoba government's plan to detain people intoxicated with long-lasting drugs like methamphetamine at a Winnipeg detox facility for up to 72 hours could put marginalized people at greater risk.

A large group of more than 100 protesters gathered outside the Manitoba Legislative Building in downtown Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon, calling on the government to reconsider Bill 48, which increased the limit of how long a highly-intoxicated person can be detained from 24 hours to 72 hours.

The bill passed through the Legislature earlier this month.

On Monday, the province offered media a tour of the 20-room detention facility at 190 Disraeli Fwy., which is set to open at the end of the month. Another 20 rooms are expected to be added at a later date.

Rally organizer Monica Ballantyne said the government made a "rushed decision" with little community consultation. She worries that people who use substances will experience withdrawal and die as a result.

Azizi, beloved lion at Moncton zoo, remembered as gentle prankster

An 18-year-old male lion named Azizi at Moncton’s Magnetic Hill Zoo was euthanized due to age-related health problems, including arthritis and scoliosis. Longtime visitors shared memories of Azizi, including his mischievous habit of spraying guests and his gentle relationship with his companion, Amara. Many described him as a calm, affectionate lion who loved to roar and spend time with Amara. Regular visitors were saddened by his death, with some noting they had seen him struggle to move in recent months. Zoo staff say Amara, who is about the same age and currently healthy, will remain alone for now, with no immediate plans to introduce another lion.

6 more UCP legislature members facing recall petitions, including 5 from Calgary area

Nine members of Premier Danielle Smith's United Conservative Party caucus are facing recall petitions — enough to potentially tip the balance of power in the legislature.

Elections Alberta confirmed Monday that signature collection can begin for six more UCP members, including cabinet ministers Rajan Sawhney (Calgary-North West), Myles McDougall (Calgary-Fish Creek), Dale Nally (Morinville-St. Albert) and RJ Sigurdson (Highwood).

They also target House Speaker Ric McIver (Calgary-Hays) and Muhammad Yaseen (Calgary-North), associate minister for multiculturalism.

Elections Alberta previously approved petitions to recall Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides (Calgary-Bow), backbencher Nolan Dyck (Grande Prairie) and deputy Speaker Angela Pitt (Airdrie-East).

Indigenous-led Red Dress Alert program must be implemented in Manitoba 'without delay': report

A new report urges Manitoba to pass legislation and launch an Indigenous-led Red Dress Alert system by June 2026, calling it essential to address the rising number of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. Based on extensive public engagement, the report stresses Indigenous control, cultural guidance, and clear protocols to ensure trust, accountability, and fast coordination among police, governments, and community agencies. Similar to an Amber Alert, the system would send urgent phone notifications when someone goes missing, with advocates saying the crisis demands immediate, coordinated action across all levels of government.

Classes resume at B.C. school after grizzly attack, with safety measures in place

A school in Bella Coola, B.C., has reopened with safety measures, five days after a grizzly bear attack on a group of students and teachers.
The search continued for the mother grizzly with two cubs thought to be involved in the attack, and the Acwsalcta School said in a statement on Monday that it was taking "additional steps and precautions" to ensure safety for all the students as it welcomes their return.
Students of the independent school run by the Nuxalk First Nation were not being allowed to leave the grounds, and the bus was doing door-to-door service in the wake of the attack on a group of about 20 people last Thursday that badly injured three pupils and a staff member.

Canada’s weather warning system has changed. Here’s how

Canada has updated its weather warning system to a new colour-coded model—yellow, orange, and red—based on expected impact and forecast confidence, while still issuing familiar alerts like thunderstorm, snowfall, rainfall, and wind warnings; special weather statements will remain in grey, and the change aims to make risks clearer and align Canada with international standards.

It is the only bilingual GMF — the French acronym for family doctor group — in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region, she says.

Latest fiscal update shows Alberta’s budget deficit holding steady at $6.4B

The outlook for Alberta's budget in its second-quarter update remains largely unchanged from the previously grim forecast provided in August.

Finance Minister Nate Horner estimates the government will finish the fiscal year with a $6.4-billion deficit, which grew by $1.2 billion from the original estimate provided in the 2025-26 budget, delivered in February.

It’s a similar picture to the one outlined at the end of the summer. The update cited softening oil prices for the growing deficit and said there has been a 30 per cent decline in natural resource revenue from last year.

Oil prices are expected to remain low, the update says.
