Saab says Canada's air force could have Gripen fighter jets in as little as 3 years
Should Canada choose to fly the Swedish-built Gripen-E, the country’s air force could receive the first aircraft as quickly — or perhaps even sooner — than the long-awaited American-manufactured F-35, the CEO of Saab signalled Thursday.
Micael Johansson also said the defence giant is willing to set up not only an assembly factory in Canada, but a full-fledged manufacturing centre and a research and development hub.
He added, however, that the deal, which would include technology and intellectual property transfers, would be predicated on Canada deciding to purchase the fighter.

Ontario minor hockey investigating after coaches get in fist fight at U13 game
A U13 hockey game in Lakeshore, Ontario ended in a fight between coaching staff from the Riverside Rangers and Belle River Canadiens, prompting the Ontario Minor Hockey Association to suspend all bench staff from both teams pending a hearing. The OMHA and both hockey associations condemned the behaviour, stating it does not reflect their values. Video from LiveBarn showed coaches fighting on the ice after the game, with players nearby. Lakeshore’s mayor also expressed disappointment, saying adults must act as role models and that the town will remind groups of facility conduct rules. The incident remains under investigation, and Riverside won the game 6–5.

Canada Post, union agree in principle to deal after 2 years of contentious bargaining
Canada Post and the union representing thousands of mail carriers across the country say they have reached agreements in principle after two years of contentious bargaining.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) says the sides "have agreed on the main points of the deals," and that rotating strike action has been suspended as the parties work out language in the new contracts.
"We need to agree on the contractual language that will form the collective agreements that would be put to a vote by the members," CUPW said in a statement, noting that it will "retain the right to strike."
Canada Post confirmed that the parties have reached a tentative agreement, pending a union vote.
"While this is being done, it has been agreed that all strike or lockout activities are suspended," the agency said.

Why Canada is winning the travel trade war with the U.S.
International tourism spending in the U.S. has fallen amid President Trump’s tariffs, divisive politics, and stricter border security, while Canada is experiencing a tourism boom driven by rising patriotism and its reputation as a safe, welcoming alternative. Industry experts say travelers are choosing Canada because U.S. barriers make visiting America less appealing, giving Canada a major advantage during ongoing trade tensions.

Vulnerable people could 'come out worse' after stay in 72-hour detox facility, advocate says
Advocates say the Manitoba government's plan to detain people intoxicated with long-lasting drugs like methamphetamine at a Winnipeg detox facility for up to 72 hours could put marginalized people at greater risk.
A large group of more than 100 protesters gathered outside the Manitoba Legislative Building in downtown Winnipeg on Sunday afternoon, calling on the government to reconsider Bill 48, which increased the limit of how long a highly-intoxicated person can be detained from 24 hours to 72 hours.
The bill passed through the Legislature earlier this month.
On Monday, the province offered media a tour of the 20-room detention facility at 190 Disraeli Fwy., which is set to open at the end of the month. Another 20 rooms are expected to be added at a later date.
Rally organizer Monica Ballantyne said the government made a "rushed decision" with little community consultation. She worries that people who use substances will experience withdrawal and die as a result.

Azizi, beloved lion at Moncton zoo, remembered as gentle prankster
An 18-year-old male lion named Azizi at Moncton’s Magnetic Hill Zoo was euthanized due to age-related health problems, including arthritis and scoliosis. Longtime visitors shared memories of Azizi, including his mischievous habit of spraying guests and his gentle relationship with his companion, Amara. Many described him as a calm, affectionate lion who loved to roar and spend time with Amara. Regular visitors were saddened by his death, with some noting they had seen him struggle to move in recent months. Zoo staff say Amara, who is about the same age and currently healthy, will remain alone for now, with no immediate plans to introduce another lion.

Indigenous-led Red Dress Alert program must be implemented in Manitoba 'without delay': report
A new report urges Manitoba to pass legislation and launch an Indigenous-led Red Dress Alert system by June 2026, calling it essential to address the rising number of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. Based on extensive public engagement, the report stresses Indigenous control, cultural guidance, and clear protocols to ensure trust, accountability, and fast coordination among police, governments, and community agencies. Similar to an Amber Alert, the system would send urgent phone notifications when someone goes missing, with advocates saying the crisis demands immediate, coordinated action across all levels of government.
