Young people are facing a crisis of high unemployment. Here’s how the budget addresses that
As Canada’s young people continue to struggle with a challenging labour market, the federal government has outlined its plans to address a crisis that has produced some of the highest youth unemployment rates in more than a decade.
The plan focuses on work placement and summer job creation for students, and more investments in skills training programs that the federal government says it expects will make it easier for young people to find work, including in the trades and climate-related sectors.
“To the youth, this budget was made for you,” said Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne during a speech on Tuesday before he tabled the budget in the House of Commons.

One of Trudeau’s most important climate policies is on the chopping block. Can Ottawa's Plan B get buy-in?
Canada’s 2025 budget signals the government will likely drop its planned oil and gas emissions cap, saying net-zero goals can be met through carbon markets, methane rules, and carbon capture instead. The decision, welcomed in Western Canada, marks Prime Minister Mark Carney’s shift toward economic growth over strict climate measures, distancing his approach from Justin Trudeau’s.

Canada’s top public servant warns budget will lead to 40,000 job cuts and program terminations
The federal government’s 2025 budget projects a reduction of roughly 40,000 jobs in the federal public service by 2028-29 — representing about a 10% cut from 2023-24 levels. Departments will also wind down programs outside core priorities as part of a broader spending-review initiative.

Carney's budget needs 2 more votes. Here's the local funding that could get it passed
Prime Minister Mark Carney insists the federal budget was crafted to contain a number of measures championed by MPs from other parties, and that those olive branches will become apparent in the coming days.
With one MP already crossing the floor to join the Liberals, Carney now needs only two more votes, or abstentions, to pass his budget.
The unanswered question is whether any of those measures will convince enough opposition MPs that letting the budget pass is in their interests.
“There were differing degrees of input which we received from the various opposition parties,” Carney said in Ottawa, the day after Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne tabled his first budget.
“I know, in fact, that there’s a lot in this budget that reflects the input from those parties from specific projects to certain programs and reinvestment in them,” he said. “So those parties are aware, and part of this is a process of digesting the budget.”

How the son of Russian spies paved the legal path for B.C. ostrich cull
In his battle for Canadian citizenship, Alexander Vavilov got an opportunity denied to the owners of B.C.'s Universal Ostrich Farms on Thursday — a chance to argue his case before Canada's top court.
In the process, the son of Russian spies set a legal threshold for decision-making "reasonableness" that would doom the B.C. birds six years later.
That threshold — and Vavilov's name — are plastered all over the lower court decisions the Supreme Court of Canada refused to reconsider this week, providing justification for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) decision to order a cull of hundreds of ostriches last December.

Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux denies coercion played a role in his resignation
Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux announced his resignation from Parliament, denying claims he planned to defect to the Liberals. He said his decision was driven by family reasons, not party pressure.
The move comes days after another MP, Chris d’Entremont, joined the Liberals — a blow to Pierre Poilievre’s leadership. Jeneroux, first elected in 2015, will leave in spring, prompting a byelection for his Edmonton seat.

Marksmen complete cull at B.C. ostrich farm, CFIA says
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said Friday that it has culled the ostrich population on a farm in Edgewood, B.C.
The announcement came a day after the Supreme Court of Canada declined to hear an appeal to save the flock at Universal Ostrich Farms, where avian flu was detected last December.
The CFIA said in a statement that after consulting with experts, it concluded that “that the most appropriate and humane option was to use professional marksmen in a controlled on-farm setting.”
"All depopulation activities were completed under CFIA veterinary supervision," the agency said.

Drug User Liberation Front founders convicted of drug trafficking
Two founders of Vancouver’s Drug User Liberation Front (DULF), Jeremy Kalicum and Eris Nyx, were convicted of drug trafficking for selling tested heroin, cocaine, and meth to users through a “compassion club.” The group aimed to provide safe, uncontaminated drugs amid a toxic street supply. A B.C. Supreme Court judge found them guilty of three counts of possession for trafficking, though their criminal convictions are suspended pending a constitutional challenge arguing drug users’ rights to life and liberty. The Charter case will begin on November 24.

Canada's Indigenous veterans faced tough battles — abroad and at home
John Moses says that when his father, Russell Moses, returned on leave from the Korean War, his battles weren't over.
When the Indigenous residential school survivor came back to Canada in 1952, he was turned away from a bar in Hagersville, Ont., because of his race, his son said.
"That was not unique," said John Moses, a member of the Delaware and Upper Mohawk bands from Six Nations of the Grand River, and himself a third-generation member of the Canadian Armed Forces.

First flu death of the season in Alberta amid warnings about potentially tough months ahead
Alberta has marked the province's first influenza death of this year's flu season, after last year's season proved the deadliest in more than a decade.
The province's respiratory virus dashboard shows a person in their 60s living in the central zone has died due to influenza.
During the 2024-2025 flu season, 237 Albertans died due to influenza, with more than 3,700 people hospitalized.
The timing of this year's first influenza death is on par with what health officials might see in other years, said Dr. James Talbot, Alberta's former chief medical officer of health.
"We're well and truly into the beginning of influenza season," said Talbot.
So far, more than 100 people in Alberta have been hospitalized with influenza this season, with eight patients treated in intensive care.
Some countries have already reported seeing an early start to flu season with increased caseloads, such as the U.K. where the National Health Service warned at the end of October cases were three times higher than the same time the previous year.
Countries across the Southern Hemisphere dealt with a nastier flu season, which Talbot says could also be the case in Canada, where he expects a significant influenza season that would strain the health care system.
"In Alberta, we run our hospitals and our emergency departments at about 100 per cent all the time," said Talbot. "And that means that it doesn't take many respiratory cases — that would include both flu and COVID — to put the emergency departments and hospitals in general under a lot of stress."

Canada's loss of measles-free status a setback, but 'reversible': health official
Canada has lost its measles elimination status after recording over 5,000 cases across nine provinces and one territory since fall 2024, the Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed. The Pan American Health Organization officially revoked the status, ending 27 years of measles-free designation. Canada can regain the status once the outbreak is halted for at least 12 months.

What Democrats gained from the shutdown, and could lose by giving in
Democrats in Congress managed to stand firm against U.S. President Donald Trump long enough to force the lengthiest federal government shutdown in the country's history.
