A psychiatrist testified that 12-year-old L.L., who died in 2022 while under the care of Burlington couple Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber, could have survived if they had taken him to the emergency room as she repeatedly urged. L.L., who was severely malnourished and anxious, was found unresponsive and emaciated in a cold, wet basement room. Cooney and Hamber, who were trying to adopt L.L. and his younger brother J.L., are on trial for first-degree murder, confinement, assault, and failing to provide the necessities of life. The boys, both Indigenous and wards of Ottawa’s Children’s Aid Society, had been living with the couple since 2017.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says if elected he’d use the notwithstanding clause to overturn Friday’s ruling from the Supreme Court striking down mandatory minimums for accessing or possessing child pornography.
Friday’s decision deeming those one-year prison sentences unconstitutional not only split the bench 5-4, but has received swift backlash from provincial and federal leaders.
Poilievre added to the mounting condemnation in an interview with CBC News.
“This ruling is wrong-headed and I would oppose the ruling and I would use the notwithstanding clause to overturn it,” he said in an interview airing on CBC's Rosemary Barton Live Sunday.

Hudson’s Bay is returning its former stores to landlords, effectively ending B.C. billionaire Ruby Liu’s fight to take over the collapsed retailer’s leases.
Franco Perugini, HBC's senior vice-president of real estate and legal, said in a Monday email to The Canadian Press that the company is disclaiming the leases it had for 25 properties Liu tried to buy.
A disclaimer is a legal mechanism that ends a lease before it expires and thus, releases the tenant from obligations like paying rent or maintaining the property.
As long as no landlord objects to the disclaimer, Perugini says the HBC leases will be terminated Nov. 27.
