Ontario to pull ad that angered Trump on Monday, Ford says — after weekend's World Series games

U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Ontario’s anti-tariff ad on social media, prompting Premier Doug Ford to announce he would pull the ad after it airs during the World Series weekend. The ad, which quoted former U.S. president Ronald Reagan to promote free trade, angered Trump, who responded by suspending all trade negotiations with Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada remains ready to resume talks whenever the U.S. is willing. Sources said Trump’s abrupt decision on Thursday night took Ottawa by surprise.

B.C. billionaire Ruby Liu loses court fight to take over Hudson's Bay properties

A B.C. billionaire who spent the summer fighting to move into former Hudson’s Bay properties found herself on the losing end of an Ontario Superior Court decision on Friday.

Judge Peter Osborne ruled that landlords for the collapsed retailer will not be forced to accept Ruby Liu as a tenant.

In his judgment, Osborne said he had “significant concerns” about Liu’s ability to meet the terms of the leases she wanted.

HBC declined to comment on his decision, while a spokesperson for Liu did not immediately respond to messages from The Canadian Press. Both parties have the ability to appeal the decision, though neither has announced plans to.

Striking B.C. public service workers announce tentative deal with province

The B.C. General Employees' Union (BCGEU) reached a tentative agreement with the provincial government, potentially ending an eight-week strike that began on Sept. 2 and disrupted liquor distribution, wildfire response, and other public services. The deal, which still requires ratification by 34,000 public service workers, includes a 3% annual wage increase over four years, better telework arrangements, and targeted pay raises for lower-income employees. BCGEU president Paul Finch said the agreement represents progress on wages and affordability, helping retain experienced workers who provide essential public services.

Teachers and supporters gather in Alberta education minister's riding as back-to-work legislation looms

Protesters from across Alberta gathered Saturday in the southwest Calgary community of West Springs, located in the provincial electoral district of Calgary-Bow — a seat that's been held by Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides since 2019.

The gathering, organized by Public Interest Alberta, saw Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) members and supporters door-knock and drop off yellow signs throughout the riding in support of strengthening public education.

About 51,000 public, separate and francophone school teachers across Alberta have been on strike since Oct. 6, leaving around 750,000 K-12 students out of school for more than three weeks.

Ford defends Ontario's anti-tariff ad that angered Trump, says he achieved his goal

Ontario Premier Doug Ford defended his anti-tariff ad campaign using Ronald Reagan’s words, saying it successfully raised U.S. awareness about tariff impacts and generated over a billion impressions. After the ad angered President Donald Trump, who halted trade talks with Canada, Ford pulled the ads following discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney to help resume negotiations. Ford said the campaign cost less than the reported $75 million and achieved its goal by sparking major media attention across the U.S.

All polls closed in Nunavut’s 7th general election, as results trickle in

All polls in the Nunavut general election have closed, as the count continues to determine the 20 new members who will make up the territory’s seventh legislative assembly.

There are no votes in two constituencies because the candidates, including former government house leader David Joanasie, were acclaimed.

Polls closed at 7 p.m. in each of the region’s three timezones.

As the last polling stations closed in the Kitikmeot region, Amittuq, Rankin Inlet North-Chesterfield Inlet and Uqqummiut are the only constituencies with some results reported.

According to Elections Nunavut’s results page, there are roughly 17,000 registered voters.

The results are being broadcast now in our live election special on CBC TV hosted by Teresa Qiatsuq in English and Inuktitut. You can watch that live on CBC North's website as well.

Results by constituency will be updated here in English, and here in Inuktitut, as they come in.

CRA looking at AI, training to help call centre staff provide accurate answers

A senior official working at the Canada Revenue Agency says the agency is looking to artificial intelligence and better training to help call centre agents provide more accurate answers to taxpayers.

Melanie Serjak, an assistant commissioner at the CRA, told MPs on a standing committee Tuesday the agency is looking to roll out a more "senior and standardized" level of training and to introduce "automation" to improve the accuracy of CRA agents' advice to the public.

"We are looking at the artificial intelligence and other technology tools that will assist the agents in providing complete and accurate responses," Serjak said. "We are currently working with our vendor in that space."
