Democracy activist Agnes Chow, now in Canada, won't return to face trial in Hong Kong
Agnes Chow, a prominent pro-democracy activist from Hong Kong, has announced that she will not return to the city to meet her bail conditions, becoming the latest figure to flee under Beijing's crackdown on dissidents. Arrested in 2020 under the national security law, Chow had served more than six months in jail over her role in the 2019 anti-government protests. She cited the pressure and its impact on her mental health as reasons for not returning to Hong Kong. The national security law has led to the arrest, imprisonment, or exile of several pro-democracy activists in the city.

Products returned to Amazon found at Toronto liquidation stores — along with buyers' personal info
Several Amazon shoppers have reported concerns after discovering their returned items, sold to liquidation stores, still displayed their personal information on the packaging. One Ottawa resident returned an item to Amazon, only to find it being sold at a liquidation store in Toronto with his full name, home address, and phone number visible on the shipping label. Other shoppers have faced similar issues, raising concerns about privacy and the potential risk of identity theft. A CBC Toronto investigation identified personal information from three dozen people on display at two locations of liquidation retailer Top Binz, prompting calls for improved privacy measures in the resale process.

Federal government hikes income requirement for foreign students, targets 'puppy mill' schools
Immigration Minister Marc Miller says Ottawa will require foreigners applying to study in Canada to have double the amount of funds currently required.
Miller says the change is one of several being put forth by the government that are meant to ensure international students aren't left vulnerable to sketchy employers and unable to afford life in Canada.
He is also warning provinces the Liberals might limit visas if colleges and universities don't adequately support students, but he told reporters that governments need to have more conversations before such changes are implemented.

Canadian NBA star wins lawsuit to undo purchase of mansion where Ontario Crypto King lived
Canadian NBA player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has won a precedent-setting lawsuit to void his $8.4-million purchase of a Burlington lakefront mansion due to fraudulent misrepresentation by the sellers. The luxury home was previously occupied by Aiden Pleterski, Ontario's self-described Crypto King. The sellers allegedly failed to disclose threatening visits to the property by those seeking Pleterski before the NBA star's purchase. Pleterski, facing financial troubles from his cryptocurrency and foreign exchange operation, had leased-to-own the mansion. In a November judgment, the court ruled in favor of Gilgeous-Alexander, voiding the sale and awarding damages for mortgage and insurance payments. The sellers were found to have knowingly made false representations about the property's privacy and security.

"Enough is enough": Canada ups student visa financial onus, threatens to "significantly" limit visas
The federal government of Canada is roughly doubling the amount of money international students need to prove they have in order to get a study permit, says Canada's Immigration Minister Marc Miller.
He is also threatening that if provinces and post-secondary institutions fail to act, he will look at "significantly limiting visas" before next fall. He also said that the 20-hours a week work limit on international students, which was temporarily lifted last year will be extended until April 30, 2024.
