Large pro-Israel rally planned for Parliament Hill even as bus company cancels some transportation ๐๐
Dozens of buses from Toronto, en route to a Parliament Hill rally supporting Israel and denouncing antisemitism, faced disruption as 17 buses inexplicably failed to arrive. The UJA Federation suspects antisemitic motives, and although alternative transportation is being arranged, legal actions are pledged.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) organized the event, addressing recent hostilities between Israel and Gaza. The rally emphasizes solidarity with Israel, calls for the release of hostages, and coincides with an International Criminal Court investigation into alleged war crimes by both parties.

Thousands of pro-Israel demonstrators on Parliament Hill in a show of solidarity๐ฆ๐ท
Thousands of pro-Israel demonstrators from across the country gathered on Parliament Hill Monday to show solidarity with the country as it takes on Hamas in Gaza โ and to call for an end to antisemitism in Canada.
The crowd heard from a range of speakers, including prominent Jewish Canadian politicians, religious leaders, non-Jewish allies and embattled students from Canada's universities.
All of them had a similar rallying cry: Canada must stand should-to-shoulder with Israel as it confronts a militant group bent on destroying the Jewish state.

Democracy activist Agnes Chow, now in Canada, won't return to face trial in Hong Kong
Agnes Chow, a prominent pro-democracy activist from Hong Kong, has announced that she will not return to the city to meet her bail conditions, becoming the latest figure to flee under Beijing's crackdown on dissidents. Arrested in 2020 under the national security law, Chow had served more than six months in jail over her role in the 2019 anti-government protests. She cited the pressure and its impact on her mental health as reasons for not returning to Hong Kong. The national security law has led to the arrest, imprisonment, or exile of several pro-democracy activists in the city.

RBC handed $7.4M penalty from financial intelligence agency ๐ฐ
Canada's financial intelligence agency, the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre (Fintrac), has imposed a $7.4-million penalty on the Royal Bank of Canada for violating anti-money laundering and terrorist financing measures. The penalties include the bank's failure to submit suspicious transaction reports when there were reasonable grounds to suspect money laundering ties.
Fintrac electronically analyzes vast amounts of information from various sources to identify money linked to illicit activities and shares intelligence with law enforcement. Fintrac's director, Sarah Paquet, emphasized the agency's commitment to working with businesses for compliance but warned of necessary actions for those lagging behind.

Sport minister to launch 'independent mechanism' to review abuse in Canadian sports๐
Minister of Sport Carla Qualtrough said Tuesday she'll be announcing a "formal, independent mechanism" early next week to review systemic abuse and human rights violations in Canadian sports.
Qualtrough made the comment in Switzerland at a forum being held at the UN. Many athletes, coaches and MPs in Canada have been calling for a public inquiry into abuse in sports.
"The process will be trauma-informed, human rights based and forward-looking," she said in a speech at the Sporting Chance Forum in Geneva.

Cindy Woodhouse wins election for Assembly of First Nations national chief
Cindy Woodhouse has been elected national chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), securing victory with 50.8% support. David Pratt conceded, avoiding a seventh round of voting, as the convention centre was scheduled to close at midnight. Woodhouse, from Pinaymootang First Nation in Manitoba, worked as an AFN negotiator for a $23-billion child and family services class-action settlement with Canada last year. She succeeds RoseAnne Archibald, who was ousted earlier this year amid harassment allegations and revolts.
