Indigo bookstore vandalism sparks debate over definition of antisemitism 📚

Political activist Naomi Klein dismisses accusations against Indigo bookstore founder Heather Reisman, claiming that the red paint and posters alleging support for genocide were related to Reisman's backing of a program providing free tuition for soldiers in the 🇮🇱Israel Defence Forces.

Klein emphasizes that the protest was against Reisman's political activities, not her Jewish identity or religion. The Jewish Faculty Network echoes this perspective, expressing concern that legitimate criticism of 🇮🇱Israel is unfairly labeled as antisemitic.

Goodbye steak, hello mung beans! Overheated food prices have Canadians buying less meat

In Calgary, Susana Tobar's meat-centric meals have shifted due to rising prices. To make their budget stretch, they now use pasta to extend dishes with animal proteins over multiple days. Their Costco trips have also changed, as they limit protein purchases despite spending the same amount due to increased costs.🍖

N.S. animal sanctuaries overwhelmed by surrendered pot-bellied pigs

Farm animal sanctuaries in Nova Scotia are facing an overwhelming number of pot-bellied pigs being surrendered by owners who find them too big or too much work. Jen Lussing, co-owner of Lailo Farm Sanctuary, mentions that the issue has been growing, possibly exacerbated by social media promoting the misconception that teacup pigs stay small. Many piglets grow to 70 to 150 pounds or more. Lussing's sanctuary alone has received about 30 surrender requests this year, primarily from pet owners. Other sanctuaries, like Dandelion Acres Homestead and Rescue, are experiencing a similar influx of surrendered pot-bellied pigs. The problem is attributed to owners underestimating the size and care requirements of these animals.🐖🐗

U.S. assassination attempt charges 'confirm' Trudeau's claims about India had 'real substance,' former national security advisers say

The indictment of Indian national Nikhil Gupta for the attempted assassination of a Sikh separatist on U.S. soil validates Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's earlier allegations of potential Indian government involvement in the killing of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Gupta was charged in June and allegedly worked under an Indian government employee in a "murder-for-hire" plot. Former Canadian national security advisers find the U.S. charges supporting Trudeau's claims. Tensions between Canada and India persist as India denies the allegations. India's High Commissioner to Canada notes cooperation with the U.S. but cites a disparity in information sharing with Canada.

Dozens of Iranian regime officials denied entry to 🇨🇦Canada, says border agency

🇨🇦Canada has denied entry to dozens of senior Iranian regime officials and is investigating around 100 people with status in Canada for possible ties to Tehran. This follows the government's 2022 designation of the Islamic Republic of 🇮🇷Iran as a "regime that has engaged in terrorism and systematic and gross human rights violations."

The Canada Border Services Agency reviewed 17,800 visa applications, resulting in 78 denials. Investigations into 141 individuals with status in 🇨🇦Canada are ongoing, with nine facing hearings to determine their admissibility. The government has opted for immigration laws over designating the entire Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity. 🔎

Alberta BMO customer on the hook after almost $10K disappeared from her account

An Alberta woman says she has to repay almost $10,000 — plus interest — after her line of credit was drained and the money transferred out of her Bank of Montreal account without her permission. She checked her account, noticed a lot of money was missing, and immediately called the bank's corporate hotline to report it.

BMO investigated the transactions but will not reimburse her for the missing amount. MacNeil is now responsible for paying back the money, plus 10.8 per cent interest.

Large pro-Israel rally planned for Parliament Hill even as bus company cancels some transportation 🚌🚏

Dozens of buses from Toronto, en route to a Parliament Hill rally supporting Israel and denouncing antisemitism, faced disruption as 17 buses inexplicably failed to arrive. The UJA Federation suspects antisemitic motives, and although alternative transportation is being arranged, legal actions are pledged.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) organized the event, addressing recent hostilities between Israel and Gaza. The rally emphasizes solidarity with Israel, calls for the release of hostages, and coincides with an International Criminal Court investigation into alleged war crimes by both parties.

Thousands of pro-Israel demonstrators on Parliament Hill in a show of solidarity🇦🇷

Thousands of pro-Israel demonstrators from across the country gathered on Parliament Hill Monday to show solidarity with the country as it takes on Hamas in Gaza — and to call for an end to antisemitism in Canada.

The crowd heard from a range of speakers, including prominent Jewish Canadian politicians, religious leaders, non-Jewish allies and embattled students from Canada's universities.

All of them had a similar rallying cry: Canada must stand should-to-shoulder with Israel as it confronts a militant group bent on destroying the Jewish state.

Democracy activist Agnes Chow, now in Canada, won't return to face trial in Hong Kong

Agnes Chow, a prominent pro-democracy activist from Hong Kong, has announced that she will not return to the city to meet her bail conditions, becoming the latest figure to flee under Beijing's crackdown on dissidents. Arrested in 2020 under the national security law, Chow had served more than six months in jail over her role in the 2019 anti-government protests. She cited the pressure and its impact on her mental health as reasons for not returning to Hong Kong. The national security law has led to the arrest, imprisonment, or exile of several pro-democracy activists in the city.

RBC handed $7.4M penalty from financial intelligence agency 💰

Canada's financial intelligence agency, the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre (Fintrac), has imposed a $7.4-million penalty on the Royal Bank of Canada for violating anti-money laundering and terrorist financing measures. The penalties include the bank's failure to submit suspicious transaction reports when there were reasonable grounds to suspect money laundering ties.

Fintrac electronically analyzes vast amounts of information from various sources to identify money linked to illicit activities and shares intelligence with law enforcement. Fintrac's director, Sarah Paquet, emphasized the agency's commitment to working with businesses for compliance but warned of necessary actions for those lagging behind.

Sport minister to launch 'independent mechanism' to review abuse in Canadian sports🏅

Minister of Sport Carla Qualtrough said Tuesday she'll be announcing a "formal, independent mechanism" early next week to review systemic abuse and human rights violations in Canadian sports.

Qualtrough made the comment in Switzerland at a forum being held at the UN. Many athletes, coaches and MPs in Canada have been calling for a public inquiry into abuse in sports.

"The process will be trauma-informed, human rights based and forward-looking," she said in a speech at the Sporting Chance Forum in Geneva.

Products returned to Amazon found at Toronto liquidation stores — along with buyers' personal info

Several Amazon shoppers have reported concerns after discovering their returned items, sold to liquidation stores, still displayed their personal information on the packaging. One Ottawa resident returned an item to Amazon, only to find it being sold at a liquidation store in Toronto with his full name, home address, and phone number visible on the shipping label. Other shoppers have faced similar issues, raising concerns about privacy and the potential risk of identity theft. A CBC Toronto investigation identified personal information from three dozen people on display at two locations of liquidation retailer Top Binz, prompting calls for improved privacy measures in the resale process.
