This man says sweaters were stolen from his laundromat. He responded by starting a coat drive

Alex Winch, owner of Beach Solar Laundromat in The Beach neighborhood, chose compassion over confrontation when he discovered someone had stolen two sweaters from a customer at his laundromat. Instead of calling the police, Winch set up a donation rack outside the store for people to give or receive warm winter clothing. The response has been tremendous, with an estimated 40 to 50 coats passing through the rack in six days. The initiative was sparked when a patron reported missing sweaters, and security footage revealed another woman taking them. Winch, struck by the homelessness crisis, opted for a positive solution by providing warm clothing to those in need.🫡

Ottawa Public Health urges tough anti-smoking policy that New Zealand is scrapping 🚬

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is calling on the federal government to follow the example of New Zealand's Smoke-Free Generation law, which sought to ban cigarette sales to anyone born after 2008 for their entire lifetime.

According to OPH, current restrictions are not sufficient to protect young people from addiction. It also pushed for a federal minimum age of 21 to buy tobacco, nicotine and vaping products.

Montreal man fed up with delivery companies ignoring instructions to meet mobility needs 🧑‍🦽

Herman Jacobs, a 73-year-old with ALS, relies on online ordering but faces challenges as packages are consistently left in his building's insecure lobby instead of being delivered to his apartment. 📦

Despite adding special delivery instructions, Jacobs encounters repeated issues, particularly with Amazon's delivery partners. Retrieving packages himself is exhausting, taking at least 10 minutes. 😮‍💨

Communication barriers due to his condition make lodging complaints time-consuming, and Jacobs feels companies should take responsibility for the recurring problem. ⚠️

KPMG wants CRA affidavit in tax 'sham' case struck from public record.

In April, a judge approved KPMG's request to limit public access to documents in a $37-million tax "sham" case involving Gold Line Telemanagement. The case, alleging a "carousel scheme" by the Canada Revenue Agency, prompted KPMG to now seek removal of the affidavit from the record entirely. This move may prevent the public from learning about the Department of Justice's document filed in February, potentially holding crucial information about the alleged $37-million tax scheme against the Canadian Treasury.

Suspended B.C. immigration consultant vows to fight misconduct claims and continue political campaign

Liza Lucion, a British Columbia immigration consultant and political aspirant facing numerous complaints and a proposed class-action lawsuit, has had her license suspended for 30 months. The College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants' discipline panel issued the decision, ordering Lucion to repay $17,225 to four former clients and pay a $10,000 fine. The panel found Lucion guilty of misconduct, including providing inaccurate advice, failing to refund unearned fees, altering receipts, and offering misleading information about immigration applications. Lucion's attempts to mislead investigators were also noted. The suspension aims to give her an opportunity to reflect on her actions and improve professional obligations.😮

Most Ottawa COVID-19 signals are very high 😷

OPH says the city's health-care institutions remain at a high risk from respiratory illnesses, as they have been since early September.

The city is about to enter the traditional respiratory season — December through February — with more coronavirus signal in its wastewater than at this point over the past three years, less flu signal than last year at this time, and roughly the same amount of RSV.

Oil revenues, taxes nudge up Alberta's projected surplus to $5.5B

The province of Alberta is expecting a surplus of $5.5 billion this year, attributed to higher-than-expected revenue from income taxes and non-renewable resource revenues. Despite the positive short-term outlook, Finance Minister Nate Horner expresses concerns about future challenges, including the need to refinance maturing debt at higher rates and negotiations with unionized public employees whose contracts expire next year. In response, the government has decided to end the complete waiver of the provincial fuel tax as of January 1, 2024. Notably, a key election commitment from the United Conservative Party government was absent from the financial forecast.👀

Former Regina junior hockey coach Bernard 'Bernie' Lynch found guilty of sexual assault, assault

Former Regina Pats coach, Bernard 'Bernie' Lynch, has been found guilty of historical sexual assault and assault. The verdict, delivered by Justice Peter T. Bergbusch, indicates that Lynch inappropriately touched and struck a 17-year-old player in August 1988 while serving as an assistant coach. 👨‍⚖️

Despite Lynch's pleas of not guilty, the court found the complainant's testimony consistent and truthful. The incident occurred during a hockey school, where Lynch allegedly pressured the teen into inappropriate activities. Lynch's defense argued lack of corroboration and questioned the logic of the complainant's testimony. 🏒

The complainant reported the assault decades later, prompted by news stories about similar accusations against Lynch, aiming to prevent further harm under his care.

CSIS to probe B.C. office after allegations of rape, harassment and toxic workplace

Canada's spy agency, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), has initiated a workplace assessment of its British Columbia office following serious allegations of sexual assault and harassment raised by whistleblowers. The allegations involve a senior officer who has been implicated, and the individual has been removed from the workplace. The whistleblowers claim instances of sexual assault, including rape, by the senior colleague, with one officer reporting nine incidents between 2019 and 2020. Despite warnings, a second officer alleges being sexually assaulted by the same individual. The investigation was brought to light by The Canadian Press.‼️

CSIS Director David Vigneault states that accusations of a "toxic workplace" in the British Columbia office cannot be taken lightly. A Workplace Climate Assessment will be conducted to address potential barriers to a safe, healthy, and respectful workplace. The agency initiated a third-party investigation promptly upon learning about the allegations. Vigneault acknowledges the existence of a culture that allowed inappropriate behaviors to fester for too long. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expresses deep concern over the "devastating" and "unacceptable" allegations, and his government is directly following up on the matter.😥

2 friends rescue driver from dump truck overturned in frigid waters

Devin Campbell was driving home from a trip to Renfrew with his father when he rounded a tight corner on Barryvale Road. He saw tire tracks going off the road and a guardrail toppled over. After he pulled over, he saw the truck lying on its side.

According to Campbell, oil was coming out of the overturned truck. He told his father to call 91 1 and then he called his wife to bring him a pair of rubber boots, a pair of gloves and a rope. By coincidence Campbell said a friend of his, Gord Gaddess, drove by the scene on his way to the airport. He pulled over and the two men moved from the shoreline to the truck's door.

Indigo bookstore vandalism sparks debate over definition of antisemitism 📚

Political activist Naomi Klein dismisses accusations against Indigo bookstore founder Heather Reisman, claiming that the red paint and posters alleging support for genocide were related to Reisman's backing of a program providing free tuition for soldiers in the 🇮🇱Israel Defence Forces.

Klein emphasizes that the protest was against Reisman's political activities, not her Jewish identity or religion. The Jewish Faculty Network echoes this perspective, expressing concern that legitimate criticism of 🇮🇱Israel is unfairly labeled as antisemitic.

N.S. animal sanctuaries overwhelmed by surrendered pot-bellied pigs

Farm animal sanctuaries in Nova Scotia are facing an overwhelming number of pot-bellied pigs being surrendered by owners who find them too big or too much work. Jen Lussing, co-owner of Lailo Farm Sanctuary, mentions that the issue has been growing, possibly exacerbated by social media promoting the misconception that teacup pigs stay small. Many piglets grow to 70 to 150 pounds or more. Lussing's sanctuary alone has received about 30 surrender requests this year, primarily from pet owners. Other sanctuaries, like Dandelion Acres Homestead and Rescue, are experiencing a similar influx of surrendered pot-bellied pigs. The problem is attributed to owners underestimating the size and care requirements of these animals.🐖🐗
