This commonly prescribed cancer drug💊was supposed to help save his life. Instead, it killed him
Dr. Anil Kapoor, diagnosed with stage four colon cancer, died shortly after receiving the commonly prescribed cancer drug Fluorouracil (5-FU).⚰️
Despite being pre-screened for genetic variants, the drug caused severe adverse effects, leading to his death. Some provinces pre-screen for genetic variants that may make patients vulnerable to 5-FU toxicity, but experts warn of potential false security.⚠️
Anil's case revealed that pre-screening guidelines are based on studies predominantly involving white populations, neglecting the diverse genetic makeup of others. The Kapoor family expressed shock at this oversight, emphasizing the need for more inclusive medical studies in🇨🇦 Canada. 😔

Quebec tuition hike would likely downgrade McGill, Concordia credit scores: report.
Quebec's plan to increase tuition for English universities, per Moody's, may impact McGill and Concordia with potential credit downgrades (Aa2 stable for McGill and Aa3 stable for Concordia). The government's proposal aims to raise tuition for out-of-province undergraduates and non-research graduate students from $9,000 to $17,000, but the additional funds won't directly benefit the universities. Instead, they will be redistributed to French-language institutions.
This could make McGill and Concordia the universities with the highest domestic tuition fees in Canada, exposing them to reputational and financial risks. The report notes potential changes in student compositions and a negative impact on their reputation and strategic brand due to lower demand from Canadian non-Quebec students.

'Undignified,' 'inhumane,' 'wicked': Sexual abuse survivors say they're revictimized during civil process
Survivors of abuse in Canada, including John Cody, have described feeling revictimized during civil litigation processes against institutions that allegedly failed to prevent the abuse. Cody, who sued his former Ottawa high school teacher and institutions, faced traumatic experiences during mediation, including a message implying he wouldn't live long enough to see a resolution due to his terminal illness. These survivors' stories shed light on the challenges and trauma faced by abuse survivors during civil litigation involving large institutions, often kept confidential due to settlements. Some suggest the need for education for everyone involved in the legal system, including judges, mediators, and lawyers, to better handle these cases.😮

Man who pleaded guilty in incel-inspired Toronto murder sentenced to life in prison 👨⚖️
A Toronto man, who pleaded guilty to an incel-inspired murder of a massage parlour employee, has been sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 10 years. Despite being 17 at the time, he was sentenced as an adult due to the judge deeming a youth sentence insufficient for accountability. 🧑
The attack, committed with a sword 🗡️ in 2020, was driven by a misogynistic ideology linked to incel culture. The court ruled it an act of terrorism, marking a first in🇨🇦 Canada for incel-motivated terrorist activity. The perpetrator extensively researched and embraced the incel ideology, rejecting claims of being brainwashed. He also received a concurrent three-year sentence for attempted murder.
Prosecutors sought an adult sentence, highlighting meticulous planning and lack of remorse, while the defense aimed for the Youth Criminal Justice Act's 10-year limit.👮

This man says sweaters were stolen from his laundromat. He responded by starting a coat drive
Alex Winch, owner of Beach Solar Laundromat in The Beach neighborhood, chose compassion over confrontation when he discovered someone had stolen two sweaters from a customer at his laundromat. Instead of calling the police, Winch set up a donation rack outside the store for people to give or receive warm winter clothing. The response has been tremendous, with an estimated 40 to 50 coats passing through the rack in six days. The initiative was sparked when a patron reported missing sweaters, and security footage revealed another woman taking them. Winch, struck by the homelessness crisis, opted for a positive solution by providing warm clothing to those in need.🫡

Ottawa Public Health urges tough anti-smoking policy that New Zealand is scrapping 🚬
Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is calling on the federal government to follow the example of New Zealand's Smoke-Free Generation law, which sought to ban cigarette sales to anyone born after 2008 for their entire lifetime.
According to OPH, current restrictions are not sufficient to protect young people from addiction. It also pushed for a federal minimum age of 21 to buy tobacco, nicotine and vaping products.

Montreal man fed up with delivery companies ignoring instructions to meet mobility needs 🧑🦽
Herman Jacobs, a 73-year-old with ALS, relies on online ordering but faces challenges as packages are consistently left in his building's insecure lobby instead of being delivered to his apartment. 📦
Despite adding special delivery instructions, Jacobs encounters repeated issues, particularly with Amazon's delivery partners. Retrieving packages himself is exhausting, taking at least 10 minutes.😮💨
Communication barriers due to his condition make lodging complaints time-consuming, and Jacobs feels companies should take responsibility for the recurring problem.⚠️

KPMG wants CRA affidavit in tax 'sham' case struck from public record.
In April, a judge approved KPMG's request to limit public access to documents in a $37-million tax "sham" case involving Gold Line Telemanagement. The case, alleging a "carousel scheme" by the Canada Revenue Agency, prompted KPMG to now seek removal of the affidavit from the record entirely. This move may prevent the public from learning about the Department of Justice's document filed in February, potentially holding crucial information about the alleged $37-million tax scheme against the Canadian Treasury.

Most Ottawa COVID-19 signals are very high 😷
OPH says the city's health-care institutions remain at a high risk from respiratory illnesses, as they have been since early September.
The city is about to enter the traditional respiratory season — December through February — with more coronavirus signal in its wastewater than at this point over the past three years, less flu signal than last year at this time, and roughly the same amount of RSV.

Oil revenues, taxes nudge up Alberta's projected surplus to $5.5B
The province of Alberta is expecting a surplus of $5.5 billion this year, attributed to higher-than-expected revenue from income taxes and non-renewable resource revenues. Despite the positive short-term outlook, Finance Minister Nate Horner expresses concerns about future challenges, including the need to refinance maturing debt at higher rates and negotiations with unionized public employees whose contracts expire next year. In response, the government has decided to end the complete waiver of the provincial fuel tax as of January 1, 2024. Notably, a key election commitment from the United Conservative Party government was absent from the financial forecast.👀
