Rogers Communications reaches tentative agreement with Metro Vancouver technicians

Workers at Rogers Communications Inc. in Metro Vancouver, who were formerly with Shaw, have reached a tentative agreement with the company. The union representing the workers, the United Steelworkers (USW), announced the agreement, expressing hope for its ratification on Monday. The workers, who provide internet, phone, and television services, had been locked out by Rogers after concerns over job security arose following the merger of the two companies. The tentative agreement may bring an end to the two-and-a-half-week labor dispute, allowing the workers to return to their jobs.📲📱

Canada housing market slowdown a reality check for home sellers, realtors say

The balance is shifting in Canada's housing market, with realtors in most major markets saying home sales are slowing from Vancouver to Toronto. For home sellers who missed the signs, the slowdown can come as a surprise. “After a few years of a crazy market, it's definitely been a shock for sellers,” real estate broker Lorna Willis said. “Primarily what's changed is the amount of time that it's taking to sell a home. So we're seeing the average days on market here to be 24, but it can take three to six months to sell a home.”

Realtors say two major groups of buyers have stepped back from the market because of high interest rates: first-time buyers, who are finding housing increasingly unaffordable; and investors, who can no longer rely on rental income to pay those higher mortgages.

Research underway aims to make wildfire evacuations smoother

Charlie Kesslar vividly remembers evacuating Drayton Valley, Alta., during a severe wildfire six months ago. The evacuation, prompted by the worst wildfire season in a century, was challenging with heavy traffic turning a 25-minute drive into a four-hour ordeal. Kesslar was one of tens of thousands affected, and now researchers are working on improving evacuation procedures for future incidents.

A floor installer died in a weekend fall on his boss's property. His family wants answers

Family and former colleagues of a western Quebec man whose workplace death went unreported publicly are speaking out in the hopes of learning more about his final moments — and sparing other workers the same fate.

Ron Hill, who would have turned 63 next month, was two years away from retirement when he was struck by machinery on Sept. 10 and fell from a building on property owned by his boss in Ottawa's rural southeast outskirts. Given Hill was a floor installer, his family says they have questions about how he died in a roofing incident.

Federal housing minister floats Airbnb crackdown to boost long-term rental supply.

Housing Minister Sean Fraser stated that the federal government is exploring measures to limit the number of Airbnb and short-term rental units to increase the supply of homes for longer-term rentals. This initiative is part of a broader plan to address the shortage of affordable homes. The upcoming fall economic statement is expected to include several billion dollars in new measures to tackle the housing crisis. Fraser emphasized the potential to make tens of thousands of homes available by converting existing short-term rental properties into housing for long-term renters and buyers.

Sask. legislature interrupted by protesters calling for ceasefire in Gaza

Monday's session in the Saskatchewan legislature was interrupted by protesters calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

"Hopefully this shows our governments what we want, because if governments are for the people, why aren't they listening to the people?" said protester Tayyaba Farooq.

Following a rally Monday at 1 p.m. CST outside the legislature in Regina, several dozen people entered the public gallery. Partway through question period, they began to chant, "Ceasefire Now" and "Free Palestine."

The speaker asked them to be seated and comply with the legislature rules, which prohibit gallery members from speaking. The group continued.

Saskatchewan Party government MLAs then stood and walked out of the chamber. NDP MLAs, who have supported the calls for a ceasefire, eventually left as well.

A petition is calling for the reinstatement of a doctor who says he was suspended from his medical residency at the University of Ottawa after posting pro-Palestinian messages on social media.

Dr. Yipeng Ge has posted multiple times on social media supporting the Palestinian cause, including by criticizing what he calls "apartheid upon Palestinian people" and "settler colonialism." University of Ottawa spokesperson Jesse Robichaud said that it had received complaints about an alleged breach of professional standards by a medical resident.

Proposed federal clean power grid regulations unfeasible for Sask., Duncan says

The Saskatchewan government has rejected proposed federal clean electricity regulations, part of Canada's climate change plan, deeming them unfeasible within the stipulated timeline. The regulations, aiming for net-zero emission electrical grids across Canada by 2035, have faced criticism from Saskatchewan for being costly and potentially compromising grid reliability. The federal guidelines require power utilities to transition to greener energy sources, reducing emissions to meet a set performance standard. Saskatchewan argues that the regulations infringe on the province's constitutional jurisdiction over electrical energy and that the proposed changes are impractical within the given timeframe. Ottawa's deadline for feedback on the regulations was November 2, with the final version expected to be published next year.🧐

Canada's debt charges are ballooning as Freeland tables a gloomy fall economic statement

The fall economic statement by Canada's Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland reveals that servicing the federal government's substantial debt will significantly increase in the coming years, consuming a larger portion of Ottawa's revenue than in recent times. While Canada is expected to avoid a recession, economic growth is projected to slow down, with a nearly one percentage point rise in unemployment forecasted for the next year. The statement proposes an additional $20.8 billion in spending over the next six years, mainly allocated to housing initiatives and climate-friendly projects. Despite presenting the increase as smaller than in previous years, the federal government has consistently run deficits, exacerbated by larger ones during the COVID-19 pandemic. With interest rates at a 20-year high, the cost of borrowing has surged from $20.3 billion in 2020-21 to $46.5 billion in the current fiscal year. Debt service charges are expected to reach $60.7 billion in 2028-29, making them one of the most costly items in the federal budget—exceeding spending on the Canadian Armed Forces by a significant margin.😐
