Polls close in N.W.T. territorial election
Residents in most of the Northwest Territories (N.W.T.) ridings have concluded voting, determining the composition of the territory's 20th Legislative Assembly. Polls opened in 16 of the 19 ridings, with three candidates acclaimed. In Dettah, polls remained open until 8:26 p.m. due to a delayed opening. The election, originally scheduled for October 3, was postponed in August due to wildfires and evacuations. Out of 25,856 registered voters, 2,382 had already cast ballots by Friday. The results will bring new MLAs, and there will be a new premier, as some ridings lack incumbent candidates, including Range Lake, formerly represented by ex-premier Caroline Cochrane.๐ณ

Canadians who've escaped Gaza share bittersweet feelings of returning home
As the world watches whatโs unfolding in the Gaza Strip, some people are now lucky enough to tell the story of what they endured. Most of the roughly 400 Canadians who were trapped in Gaza have escaped through the Rafah border crossing into Egypt and are safely back in Canada, but theyโre still worried about loved ones they had to leave behind.
Touria Izri speaks with some of those Canadians about their bittersweet feelings of returning home.

WATCH: Disagree better? Yes, Colorado's Jared Polis and Utah's Spencer Cox insist.
Political division in the U.S., as revealed by a recent Pew Research study, has deepened over the years. Republicans and Democrats now harbor negative views not only about the opposing party but also its members, labeling them as closed-minded, dishonest, immoral, and unintelligent. In this context, two seasoned politicians from the major parties are attempting to provide a potential way forward, if not a definitive remedy.

Son of Vivian Silver, Winnipeg-born humanitarian killed in Hamas attack on Israel, moved by Canadians' support
The son of a Jewish humanitarian who was killed in the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel says he was moved by the support for his mother from Canadians during the weeks when it was believed she was being held hostage by Hamas in the Gaza strip.
On Monday, the family of peace activist Vivian Silver, 74, who was born and raised in Winnipeg, confirmed that remains found on the kibbutz where Silver lived were her.
Yonatan Zeigen said Canadians took his mother's "persona to heart" and felt supported by the country's people and government. A funeral for Silver will be held Thursday in Israel, he said.
"People I think, most of us, want their deaths to have meaning like our lives, we want to live meaningful lives and we want to die meaningful deaths," he said in an interview with The National's Adrienne Arsenault.โฐ๏ธ

Nathaniel Veltman guilty of 1stโdegree and attempted murder in 2021 attack on Muslim family in London, Ont.
The family appreciates the support received over the past two-plus years. While acknowledging the verdict won't bring back their loved ones, Tabinda Bukhari, Madiha Salman's mother, sees it as a recognition by the justice system of the perpetrator's intent to instill fear. She emphasizes the crime extends beyond the Muslim community, stating it's an attack on the safety of all Canadians. Bukhari concludes that the trial and verdict highlight the ongoing need to address hatred in various forms within communities.

Province reveals replacements for 2 N.B. place names containing racial slur
Two places in northern New Brunswick with names containing a racial slur will be renamed in January. After consultations with Mi'kmaw and Wolastoqey leaders and residents, the community located west of Campbellton will be called Evergreen, and an adjacent mountain will be named Meto'mqwijuig Mountain. The surrounding protected natural area will also be called Meto'mqwijuig. The name Meto'mqwijuig, pronounced Meh-tum-ka-jig, was the original Mi'kmaw name for the mountain, meaning "to hear something that is flowing" or "a mountain stream nearby." These changes are part of the province's efforts to address racist place names in consultation with Indigenous communities.๐ค

Tired of hearing how every month or year is one for the record books? So are some climate scientists
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its monthly climate report for the month of October on Wednesday and, once again, it was one for the record books.
They found that global land and surface temperatures for the month were the warmest on record, coming it at 1.34 C warmer than the 20th-century average. This followed a similar finding from the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Services (C3S), as well as four months of consecutive record-setting temperatures. Now NOAA says there is greater than a 99 per cent chance that 2023 will beat out 2016 as the hottest year on record.

Judge tells jurors in trial of ex-RCMP official accused of leaking secrets to use 'common sense'
In an unprecedented national security trial, the judge reminded the jury that they can believe "some, none, or all" of the testimony they've heard in the past seven weeks. Justice Robert Maranger provided instructions to the 12 jurors responsible for deciding the fate of Cameron Ortis, a former RCMP intelligence official accused of leaking secrets to police targets. Ortis, 51, has pleaded not guilty in Ontario Superior Court to six charges, including sharing special operational information without authority. He claimed to have acted to protect Canada from a "grave threat" reported by a foreign entity.

Canada probing reports that B.C.-based company's drone tech ended up in Russia, Blair says
Canada's national security agencies will investigate reports suggesting that Skycope Technologies Inc., a British Columbia-based company, sold its anti-drone technology to a Russian university, potentially violating sanctions imposed due to the conflict in Ukraine. The technology, SkyEye radar detector, was reportedly acquired by Moscow's Mirea University of Technology. Skycope denied any violation, stating it was unaware of its device being used by the Russian university. Defence Minister Bill Blair emphasized the seriousness of the matter, and Canadian authorities will conduct investigations to determine if sanctions were breached.
