Bear killed after attacking man walking with dog on Metro Vancouver trail

A man in Maple Ridge, B.C., was injured while defending his dog from a black bear attack on a trail. The man fought off the bear with help from nearby anglers. He sustained minor injuries, while the dog was unharmed, and the bear was killed in self-defense.

Officials warn that bears in the Lower Mainland remain active year-round due to mild winters and food availability. They recommend precautions like carrying bear spray, keeping pets leashed, managing attractants like garbage, and making noise to avoid surprising bears. B.C. has one of the highest black bear populations, with up to 150,000 in the province.

For some in Nunavik, federal apology for dog slaughter is a step toward reconciliation

The Canadian government has apologized and allocated $45 million to Inuit in Nunavik for the mass killing of over 1,000 sled dogs in the 1950s and 1960s, which disrupted their way of life. The apology, long sought by Makivvik Corporation president Pita Aatami, acknowledges the lasting harm to families who relied on the dogs for survival. The funds will support cultural revitalization efforts, such as dog team training and care, and provide direct compensation to those impacted. Aatami views the apology as a step toward healing and closure.

Why won't Ontario track the reasons why criminal charges are dropped or stayed?

Five years ago Ontario's auditor general recommended the province start tracking the reasons criminal charges are withdrawn by prosecutors or stayed by judges — to help reduce costs and ensure cases make it through the system efficiently amid backlogs.

But despite facing bigger backlogs from the pandemic and a rising number of stayed and withdrawn charges, Ontario's Ministry of the Attorney General has refused to track those reasons.

The recommendations stem from a 2019 audit of the province's criminal court system, and were reiterated by Auditor General Shelley Spence this summer.

Ontario Passes Controversial Bill 212 on Bike Lanes and Highway 413

Ontario's Bill 212 gives the province control over municipal bike lanes and allows construction of Highway 413 to proceed without completed Indigenous consultations or environmental assessments. The bill requires approval for removing vehicle lanes for bike lanes and could lead to the removal of major bike lanes in Toronto.

Critics, including Indigenous groups and cycling advocates, have raised concerns, with opposition leader Marit Stiles accusing the government of prioritizing controversial projects over pressing issues like healthcare.

As the Canada Post strike drags on, a growing backlog increases the chances that parcels and letters won't make it to their destination by Christmas. The strike is expected to have the biggest impact on charities and small, family-run businesses.

Meanwhile, workers don't appear set to head back to work any time soon after Canada Post said Saturday there's been no "major breakthrough" in talks.

Elections Nova Scotia will delay the release of provincial election results tonight due to the late opening of a polling station in the riding of Eastern Shore.

Naomi Shelton, director of communications at Elections Nova Scotia, said the polling station at 22 Power Rd. in Mushaboom had to delay its opening after election workers arrived without some necessary supplies.

She said the station was scheduled to open at 8 a.m. local time, like all others in the province. However, the workers had to go back for those supplies, resulting in the station only opening at 9 a.m.

Fighter dies following MMA match outside Edmonton

A 33-year-old Edmonton man died following a charity mixed martial arts event held Saturday in Enoch, Alberta. The event, organized by Ultra MMA, featured novice fighters after two months of free training. Alberta RCMP are investigating the death, which occurred sometime after the man’s Saturday bout.

The incident follows recent calls for stricter regulation of combative sports in Alberta after a fatality inquiry into the 2017 death of fighter Tim Hague. Ultra MMA stated the event was sanctioned by a municipal combative sports commission and expressed condolences to the fighter’s family, pledging support. Investigations are ongoing.

Beef prices hit record high at the grocery store — and on the ranch, too

The cost of ground beef, steak and roasts has continued to rise this year, reaching historic levels on grocery store shelves. Retail beef prices fluctuate regularly, but have generally climbed throughout the last few years. The rising prices come on the eve of the busiest time for many grocers and meat shops in the lead-up to the holiday season.

Retail prices have mirrored the rising value of cattle, which reached record levels this year. Overall, food prices at grocery stores have increased by 2.7 per cent over the last 12 months, according to the latest data released by Statistics Canada last week. A kilogram of ground beef was selling for about $13 on average in September, compared to $11.69 one year earlier and about $9 five years ago.

Singh calls on Liberals to table separate GST break legislation, wants cheques sent to more people

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says he "expects" the Liberals will split their promised multi-billion-dollar affordability package into two bills to guarantee Canadians a GST holiday next month — as he and other opposition leaders push the government to increase the number of Canadians who are eligible for planned $250 rebate cheques.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week announced a multi-billion dollar affordability package aimed at alleviating cost-of-living pressures. The first element is a proposed GST holiday on some goods and services — including children's toys, beer and wine and restaurant meals — from Dec. 14 until just after Valentine's Day.

Trudeau also announced a plan to send $250 cheques to the 18.7 million people in Canada who worked in 2023 and earned $150,000 or less.
