Tens of thousands without power, ferries cancelled after 'bomb cyclone' batters B.C. coast

Tens of thousands of people, primarily on Vancouver Island, were without power overnight after hurricane-force wind gusts from a "bomb cyclone" system blasted southwest British Columbia on Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

Gusts of nearly 160 km/h were recorded at the Sartine Island weather station just off the coast of northern Vancouver Island, as the storm brought down trees and power lines across the South Coast.

As of 6 a.m. PT on Wednesday, almost 90,000 B.C. Hydro customers on Vancouver Island were still without power. That number was as high as 150,000 on Tuesday.

Emily Carr painting sold at a barn for $50 US fetches $349K at Toronto auction

A 1912 painting by famed B.C. artist Emily Carr, discovered in a New York barn, sold for $349,250 CAD at a Toronto auction, far surpassing its $100,000 to $200,000 presale estimate. Titled Masset, Q.C.I., the oil painting depicts a carved grizzly bear atop a Haida memorial totem pole and reflects Carr's dedication to documenting First Nations artistic heritage in British Columbia.

The piece, gifted to Carr’s friends in the 1930s, remained unnoticed in a barn in the Hamptons for nearly 90 years. U.S. art dealer Allen Treibitz purchased it for $50 at a barn sale and, after researching Carr’s legacy, contacted Heffel Fine Art Auction House in Canada. The discovery marks the painting’s first recognition, as it was previously unknown to Carr’s catalog. Treibitz called it an "otherworldly" work and praised Carr’s ability to capture cultural and artistic significance on a small canvas.

Canada's top court overturns acquittals for man accused of selling his spouse for sex

A man acquitted of forcing his wife to have sex with strangers for money in Alberta and Nova Scotia will face a new trial following a decision from Canada's top court. The man had been found not guilty on sex trafficking charges in a ruling affirmed by the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. In a 7-2 decision last week, the Supreme Court of Canada overturned the acquittals and ordered a new trial.

The accused — identified only as T.J.F. —  had been charged with trafficking his common-law spouse and receiving a material benefit from it. His partner, J.D., alleged that she was forced to provide sexual services for money under threat of violence. The Supreme Court ruled that a trial judge in Nova Scotia failed to consider the accused's history of violence against his partner, which in turn cast doubt on the woman's credibility in court.

Trudeau government to send $250 cheques to most people, slash GST on some goods

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Thursday a suite of new measures designed to alleviate some of the affordability pressures people have been experiencing in the post-COVID era, including a GST holiday for two months on some eligible goods and services.

The Liberal government will also send $250 to the 18.7 million people in Canada who worked in 2023 and earned $150,000 or less.

Those cheques, which the government is calling the "Working Canadians Rebate," will arrive sometime in "early spring 2025," Trudeau said.

Another storm approaches Vancouver Island as crews finish restoring power to thousands

About 30,000 properties on Vancouver Island remained without power early Thursday as B.C. Hydro crews worked to repair damage from a "bomb cyclone" that hit earlier this week. While power has been restored to over 90% of the 320,000 customers affected at the storm's peak, cleanup efforts may be slowed by another approaching storm, though it is expected to be less severe. Crews are focusing on areas like Gabriola Island, Denman Island, and Hornby Island, with restoration efforts continuing throughout the day.

Overnight warming bus service cancelled by Hamilton councillors, as they opt for new drop-in

A transit bus designated as a moving, overnight warming centre is unlikely to be on Hamilton streets this winter, after councillors voted unanimously Wednesday to replace the program – and other drop-ins at some recreation centres and libraries – with one 25-person overnight drop-in centre and additional permanent shelter beds.

The warming bus program ran from Dec. 1, 2023 to March 31 of this year, nightly from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Its route was a loop covering the Mountain and lower city, with about 15 stops including the West Hamilton Bus Loop, Lime Ridge Mall, Eastgate Square Terminal, Norman Pinky Lewis Recreation Centre and Park and Cannon streets.

Some seniors outraged over being left out of federal plan to dole out $250 cheques

The Canadian government announced a $250 "Working Canadians Rebate" for individuals earning $150,000 or less in 2023, costing $4.68 billion. However, seniors, retirees, and those on social assistance are excluded, sparking criticism. Disability advocate Neil Pierce, 69, called the measure a "political handout," highlighting concerns that it stigmatizes non-working and vulnerable populations.

Insurance premium hikes will jolt drivers. Does promise of future savings make it all worthwhile?

When the government touts that its auto insurance reforms might curb premiums by $400 come 2027, the ministers and premier don't readily mention what's to come in the three years leading up to that.

For this year and the next two, Alberta is permitting annual rate increases of 3.7 per cent, 7.5 and 7.5 per cent, respectively. That amounts to about $325 more for the average driver.

Steps forward, steps back.
