Small Businesses Struggle as Canada Post Strike Disrupts Holiday Shipping

A strike by Canada Post workers is causing major disruptions for small businesses, especially during the critical holiday season. With delays in deliveries and higher costs from private couriers, businesses like model train seller Lorne James's and clothing boutique Onze are facing significant losses. As the strike continues, many worry that customers will turn to larger retailers like Amazon. Negotiations are ongoing, but there's no immediate resolution in sight.

First came the apartment. Then he got clean. Now he's giving back

The first time Colin Beaudry was arrested, he was just 13 years old. Now, at 47, Beaudry is finally breaking a cycle of addiction, incarceration and homelessness — a change he hopes will inspire others.

Beaudry now lives alone in an apartment he finally secured in April after a year of living on the street. He even has a cat named Kit Kat.

"Maybe I'll give someone else hope, too," said Beaudry as he sat at a picnic table in Dundonald Park in Ottawa's Centretown neighbourhood.

The Toronto Argonauts defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 41-24 in the Grey Cup, winning their 19th title. Winnipeg struggled with turnovers, including a Grey Cup-record three interceptions in the fourth quarter. Robert Priester's 61-yard pick-six sealed the win for Toronto. Winnipeg's Zach Collaros had a tough game, throwing four interceptions. Brady Oliveira scored a touchdown for the Bombers, but Toronto's defense proved too strong. Prince Harry also made an appearance to promote the Invictus Games in Canada.

Quebec launches action plan to improve access to abortion, protect women's right to choose

Quebec has introduced its first-ever action plan aimed at improving access to abortion in the province and reaffirming women's right to choose, particularly in light of the setbacks to reproductive rights unfolding in the United States.

Martine Biron, minister responsible for the status of women, announced the Plan d'action gouvernemental sur l'accès à l'avortement 2024-2027 on Monday, saying this plan responds to women's concerns about the protection of their rights.

"Everywhere in the world, we're seeing a decline in women's rights," Biron said, noting the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the United States in 2022, ending 50 years of federal abortion rights.

'Bomb cyclone' set to bring strong winds to B.C.'s coast, forecasters say

A powerful "bomb cyclone" is expected to hit B.C.'s coast Tuesday evening, bringing hurricane-force winds up to 100 km/h on Vancouver Island and 90 km/h in Victoria. The storm, caused by a rapid pressure drop, may down trees, cause power outages, and disrupt travel. Areas near water and inlets will face the strongest winds. This follows a series of extreme weather events in B.C. this fall, including deadly floods, windstorms, and hail. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items as the storm approaches.

Former captain with Air Cadets found guilty of sexual offences involving children

A former captain working with Air Cadets has been found guilty of all eight charges brought against him, including five involving sexual abuse against children and another three involving child pornography. During his weeks-long trial earlier this year, Adrian Schmid pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Superior Court of Justice also heard from one police officer who testified that more than 11,000 images and 140 videos of child pornography were recovered from a USB drive taken from Schmid's house. The files — which showed youths engaging in a wide range of graphic sexual acts — had been deleted, but police were able to recover them after their seizure.

Inflation ticked up to 2% in October after previous month's steep drop in gas prices

Canada's inflation rate ticked up to two per cent in October, Statistics Canada said on Tuesday. The consumer price index had previously hit 1.6 per cent in September, thanks to a steep decline in gas prices.

Gas prices fell again in October, although to a lesser extent — and with gasoline excluded, all-items inflation came in at 2.2 per cent, the same as in September and August.

Property taxes also drove headline inflation up, with the highest yearly increase since 1992, rising six per cent compared to a 4.3 per cent increase during the same period a year before.

Tens of thousands without power, ferries cancelled after 'bomb cyclone' batters B.C. coast

Tens of thousands of people, primarily on Vancouver Island, were without power overnight after hurricane-force wind gusts from a "bomb cyclone" system blasted southwest British Columbia on Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

Gusts of nearly 160 km/h were recorded at the Sartine Island weather station just off the coast of northern Vancouver Island, as the storm brought down trees and power lines across the South Coast.

As of 6 a.m. PT on Wednesday, almost 90,000 B.C. Hydro customers on Vancouver Island were still without power. That number was as high as 150,000 on Tuesday.

Emily Carr painting sold at a barn for $50 US fetches $349K at Toronto auction

A 1912 painting by famed B.C. artist Emily Carr, discovered in a New York barn, sold for $349,250 CAD at a Toronto auction, far surpassing its $100,000 to $200,000 presale estimate. Titled Masset, Q.C.I., the oil painting depicts a carved grizzly bear atop a Haida memorial totem pole and reflects Carr's dedication to documenting First Nations artistic heritage in British Columbia.

The piece, gifted to Carr’s friends in the 1930s, remained unnoticed in a barn in the Hamptons for nearly 90 years. U.S. art dealer Allen Treibitz purchased it for $50 at a barn sale and, after researching Carr’s legacy, contacted Heffel Fine Art Auction House in Canada. The discovery marks the painting’s first recognition, as it was previously unknown to Carr’s catalog. Treibitz called it an "otherworldly" work and praised Carr’s ability to capture cultural and artistic significance on a small canvas.

Canada's top court overturns acquittals for man accused of selling his spouse for sex

A man acquitted of forcing his wife to have sex with strangers for money in Alberta and Nova Scotia will face a new trial following a decision from Canada's top court. The man had been found not guilty on sex trafficking charges in a ruling affirmed by the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. In a 7-2 decision last week, the Supreme Court of Canada overturned the acquittals and ordered a new trial.

The accused — identified only as T.J.F. —  had been charged with trafficking his common-law spouse and receiving a material benefit from it. His partner, J.D., alleged that she was forced to provide sexual services for money under threat of violence. The Supreme Court ruled that a trial judge in Nova Scotia failed to consider the accused's history of violence against his partner, which in turn cast doubt on the woman's credibility in court.
