Saik'uz First Nation calls for help after 2 people disappear in single year

First Nations leaders are urging the RCMP, media, and the public to intensify efforts in locating two missing individuals from the Saik'uz First Nation. Jay Preston Raphael, 28, and Chelsey Amanda Quaw (Heron), 29, disappeared from the community, which has an on-reserve population of about 400, in February and October, respectively. Concerns have been raised because their disappearances are considered out of character. Saik'uz First Nation Chief Priscilla Mueller and the advocacy group Highway of Tears Governing Body are calling for more volunteers and resources to assist in search efforts. This organization was established in response to numerous cases of missing or murdered women and girls, particularly Indigenous, along Highway 16 between Prince George and Prince Rupert. Over 40 women and girls are linked to disappearances along this 700-kilometer stretch of highway.

P.E.I. photographer handcuffed, fined after taking pictures of Quebec City's iconic Château Frontenac

A professional photographer from Charlottetown, P.E.I., has been fined $230 for "loitering"  while he was taking pictures of Quebec City's iconic Château Frontenac hotel.

John Morris says he was standing on a sidewalk opposite the U.S. consulate near the famed hotel around noon on Tuesday, waiting for some clouds to arrive to get the perfect shot, when police officers approached him and told him to leave. He said he refused to provide his identity unless the police told him what offence he was committing. He said at one point, he took out his phone to film the interaction, and that's when police handcuffed him

Montreal Canadiens doctor saw some of the game's most brutal injuries in 60-year career 👀🤕

In September, after 60 years of service with the organization, thoracic surgeon Dr. David Mulder retired from his role as the team's head physician. (As an emeritus, he can still act as an advisor.)

As a member of the Canadiens, Mulder has seen it all, from eight Stanley Cup championships to potentially life-altering injuries for players like Trent McCleary and Max Pacioretty. With all the successes and surgeries, Mulder says he couldn't have achieved anything without his medical team. 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

Danielle Smith signals support for 'parental rights' as party members pass controversial resolutions

In a speech to party members, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed her opposition to federal net-zero rules and criticized her federal counterparts in Ottawa. However, she received strong approval from the audience when she signaled her support for "parental rights."👀

Smith stated that parental rights and choice in a child's education are fundamental core principles of her party and government, regardless of opposition from the extreme left.🤔

The annual general meeting in Calgary, attended by a large contingent affiliated with Take Back Alberta, a social conservative group, saw the passing of a non-binding resolution. This resolution would require written parental consent whenever a student under 16 wishes to change their name or pronouns at school. This issue has been a subject of contention related to LGBTQ-inclusive education policies in classrooms and extracurricular settings.😶

Canadian breaker Phil Kim qualifies for Paris Olympics, wins historic Pan Am gold

Philip Kim from Canada won the first-ever gold medal in men's breaking at the Pan American Games, securing his qualification for the Olympic Games. The 26-year-old, known as B-boy Phil Wizard in breakdancing circles, defeated Jeff (B-boy Jeffro) Louis from the United States with a 3-0 victory in the final battle. This marked the debut of breaking as a sport at the Pan Am Games, and it is set to become an Olympic event for the first time in Paris next year. Philip Kim expressed his appreciation for being part of this historic moment in breaking and the Olympics.🕺

Kim's success at the 2022 men's world breaking championship and his second-place finish this year behind Victor Montalvo from the U.S. contributed to his qualification for the Paris Olympics. He explained that making it to the Pan Am Games final was all he needed to secure his place in Paris because two U.S. competitors couldn't earn direct Olympic quotas in breaking. Kim's determination to win the final was driven by his desire to participate in the Olympics and be part of this historic event, emphasizing that the Olympic opportunity meant a lot to him.🥇

India-Canada diplomatic thaw remains remote despite visa easing

Efforts to mend strained diplomatic relations between India and Canada will be challenging, with both sides having taken maximalist positions. India partially restored visa services after suspending them due to Ottawa's accusation that Indian agents were involved in the murder of a Canadian Sikh separatist leader. These mutual recriminations have strained relations to their worst point in memory, despite historical ties between the two countries. While the visa relaxation raised hopes for improved relations, it is not a breakthrough, and neither side seems incentivized to quickly normalize relations. The deep crisis may persist, with ongoing murder investigations and political considerations in both nations.😮

TVDSB to consider free transit passes for high school student 🚌

The region's largest school board is in talks with the London Transit Commission (LTC) to consider a program that would give high school students in London, Ont., free access to city buses by the start of the next school year.

The Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) first unanimously agreed to a proposal in February that would benefit students and the transit commission amid a shortage of school bus drivers and declining LTC ridership, said Lori-Ann Pizzolato, the chair of the board.

Shanu Pande says she had been looking forward to the trip for years — a flight that would bring her father to Canada from India after he finally obtained permanent residency status.

But the September trip took a sharp turn when Harish Pant, 83, developed severe medical symptoms: chest pain, back pain, vomiting, loss of bowel control and the inability to stand up."He was deteriorating in front of my eyes," said Pande, who was accompanying her father.🥲

This grandmother works gruelling 70-hour weeks just to pay the bills. And she's not alone🫡

Young is among a growing population of Canadians who work multiple jobs to pay for life's essentials. A Statistics Canada report in August painted a bleak picture of personal finance in 2023: one in three people who work more than one job now do it because they need to, in order to pay for food and shelter, as opposed to doing so by choice.

Just four years ago, that number was one in five.💢💢
