Province says 3 Toronto bike lanes could be entirely 'ripped out,' mayor vows to fight

Ontario's transportation minister says bike lanes on three major Toronto streets could be removed entirely, not just in sections, under a proposed regulation.

The Progressive Conservative government tabled a bill last week that would require municipalities to ask the province for permission to install bike lanes when they would remove a lane of vehicle traffic. The government has said these bike lanes are contributing to gridlock, a claim critics have disputed.

The province also announced it was moving faster to review and remove bike lanes on sections of Bloor Street, Yonge Street and University Avenue through a proposed new rule.

Alberta ban on trans women in female sports advances as athletic association questions need

A new bill introduced in Alberta aims to ban transgender athletes from competing in female sports divisions, establishing "biological female-only" categories based on sex registration at birth. Tourism and Sport Minister Joseph Schow stated that the government supports the creation of mixed-gender divisions for broader inclusivity. The debate over transgender inclusion in sports centers on concerns about competitive advantages versus the importance of affirming gender identity for mental health. While major sports organizations like the NCAA and IOC have specific guidelines for transgender athletes, rules differ widely. Schow noted that the province does not track the number of female transgender athletes. The terminology used, such as "biological female," often raises concerns about the implications for transgender identities.

A man who sexually assaulted a woman he picked up on the side of the road in northern Manitoba last year and assaulted a teenage girl years earlier, in what a prosecutor called "egregious" offences, has been sentenced to three years in prison, minus the time he's already served.

As a result, there was just over a year left in the sentence Armand Thrones was handed in August, after he pleaded guilty to both counts, which were related to two separate crimes in 2023 and 2019. Both victims' identities are protected by a publication ban.

Alberta premier wins leadership review with 91.5 per cent approval

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith secured 91.5% support from United Conservative Party (UCP) members in a leadership vote, reaffirming her position and highlighting the party's unity and strength. In her acceptance speech, she called for continued collaboration to effectively govern against opposition parties. While many members praised her performance, some factions, like the 1905 Committee and Take Back Alberta, criticized her for not fully delivering on pandemic-related accountability. Despite this dissent, all 35 policy resolutions, including contentious measures on transgender rights and climate targets, were passed with wide support during the UCP's annual meeting.

Canada Post, union talks ongoing with no strike notice but CUPW says it could be issued if talks break down

Canada Post is in negotiations with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) as it faces challenges in the competitive parcel delivery market. Both sides have agreed not to issue a strike notice as long as talks are productive. CUPW members have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike if necessary, with 95.8% of urban workers and 95.5% of rural workers supporting the mandate.

Canada Post's latest contract offer includes an 11.5% wage increase over four years and protections for pensions and job security, but the union believes it falls short of their demands. The corporation has reported a loss of $490 million in the first half of 2024 and aims to negotiate a more flexible delivery model, including seven-day-a-week service. Federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon is facilitating discussions between the two parties.

Union for B.C. foremen accuses port employers of 'acting recklessly' with threat of lockout

The union representing more than 700 foremen in British Columbia is accusing the workers' employers of "acting recklessly" by threatening an industry-wide lockout to close all provincial ports by 8 a.m. PT Monday.

Frank Morena, president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 514, said the B.C. Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) publicly released a final offer on Saturday, aspects of which BCMEA said "could change if negotiations dragged on and the economic or inflationary landscape continued to shift." Specifically, the employers association listed four items at risk.

Thousands without power after strong winds batter B.C. Outages may continue overnight

Strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 108 km/h, battered coastal areas and the Central Interior of British Columbia on Monday, causing widespread power outages. As of 4:30 p.m. PT, around 100,000 customers were still without power, mainly in the Lower Mainland, though Vancouver Island, Okanagan, and Kootenay regions also experienced outages. B.C. Hydro warned that outages could last overnight, with crews focusing first on safety hazards, followed by restoring power to critical services and large outages.

The storms, accompanied by heavy rain, brought down trees and branches weakened by years of drought, damaging B.C. Hydro equipment. Wind warnings were issued across much of the province, with risks of flying debris and additional power disruptions. Meteorologists reported that the storm was affecting all of B.C., not just localized areas.
