2 Canadian families join American parents in lawsuit against social media giants
A lawsuit filed in Los Angeles accuses major social media companies of prioritizing engagement over the safety of young users, resulting in harm. This follows the suicide of B.C. teenager Amanda Todd in 2012 after facing online bullying and extortion. The lawsuit represents 11 families, including two from Canada, who claim their children suffered severe mental and physical issues due to social media. It names companies like Meta, Snapchat, TikTok's parent ByteDance, Discord, and Google, alleging they designed harmful products to increase engagement.
Attorney Matthew Bergman argues that the harm to children was a foreseeable result of these companies' choices. Google denied the allegations, stating it works with experts to ensure safety. Other companies have not commented, but typically assert they have measures in place to protect young users. This case is part of a rising number of lawsuits against tech giants regarding the effects of social media on children's well-being.

Tens of thousands of taxpayer accounts hacked as CRA repeatedly paid out millions in bogus refunds
At the height of this year's tax season, the Canada Revenue Agency discovered that hackers had obtained confidential data used by one of the country's largest tax preparation firms, H&R Block Canada.
Imposters used the company's confidential credentials to get unauthorized access into hundreds of Canadians' personal CRA accounts, change direct deposit information, submit false returns and pocket more than $6 million in bogus refunds from the public purse, an investigation by CBC's The Fifth Estate and Radio-Canada has found. In one case, the hackers filed a return with a legitimate postal code, but a fake address on a non-existent Tomato Street.

Scrap sick notes for minor illnesses like colds, says CMA
The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) is advocating for the elimination of sick note requirements for employees with minor illnesses, claiming this could prevent 12.5 million unnecessary health-care visits annually. A survey revealed that about one-third of working Canadians were asked for sick notes for short-term absences in the past year. CMA president Dr. Joss Reimer expressed frustration over the administrative burden this places on physicians, stating they would prefer to focus on patients who truly need care rather than paperwork. Additionally, patients often visit doctors only after their symptoms have resolved, making it difficult for physicians to validate their past illnesses.

Federal legislation would require some charities to disclose whether they provide abortion services
The federal government has introduced legislation that would require charities providing reproductive health services to state clearly whether they offer abortion or abortion referrals.
Organizations that fail to clearly tell their clients whether they provide these services could risk losing their charitable status.
Marci Ien, the minister for women and gender equality, said Tuesday the legislation is meant to combat the spread of "misinformation" by some charities.

Alberta's neighbours saw their own stark rural-urban election splits in new political reality
In the wake of the May 2023 election, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith observed a significant shift in the province's political landscape. Her United Conservative Party (UCP) secured a majority, dominating rural areas but facing challenges in urban centers. Smith noted that the left, represented by the NDP, has consolidated its power, creating a clear two-party divide. A map of the electoral results shows the UCP's stronghold in rural regions, winning 37 of 41 seats outside Calgary and Edmonton. Conversely, the NDP claimed all 20 seats in Edmonton and 14 of 26 in Calgary, highlighting the urban-rural split in Alberta's political landscape.

Scott Moe downplayed Sask.'s rural-urban election divide. Here's what the polls show
With the exception of Saskatchewan's most northern constituencies, the Saskatchewan Party is either leading or projected to win in all ridings outside the province's largest cities in the 2024 provincial election.
The NDP, meanwhile, is either leading or projected to win nearly all Regina and Saskatoon ridings, ousting several veteran cabinet ministers in the process.
Despite that, projected premier-designate Scott Moe said he disagrees that the election demonstrates an urban-rural divide in the province.

How high-speed rail would change Ontario and Quebec — if it actually happens
The Canadian federal Liberal government is expected to unveil detailed plans for a high-speed rail line linking Montreal and Toronto, a project long awaited by many. The proposed line would include stops in cities like Peterborough and Ottawa in Ontario, and Laval, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City in Quebec. Laval's mayor, Stéphane Boyer, emphasized the transformative potential of this connection for both Quebec and Canada, highlighting its environmental benefits. If realized, the train could reach speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour, significantly faster than current Via Rail services. However, questions remain about the timeline and the project's eventual implementation.
