95-year-old living in BC emergency room after running out of rent money at seniors residence
The B.C. seniors' advocate says the story of a 95-year-old man who is now living in Peace Arch Hospital after he says he was evicted from his independent living residence shows the province needs more subsidized housing for the elderly.
James Cullina was told he had to leave Sunnyside Manor after spending the last of his life savings and $25,000 in loans on housing. He stayed for a day or two with a member of his church but now, with nowhere else to go, he has been at the hospital for the past five days.

Liberal, NDP bill to cover diabetes and birth control medication receives royal assent
The pharmacare bill central to a political agreement between the Liberals and NDP received royal assent, becoming law. This legislation, which passed the Senate without amendments, will guide the development of a future national pharmacare plan and enable the government to make agreements with provinces and territories to include diabetes and birth-control medications in public health coverage. British Columbia has already initiated a partnership with Ottawa for the program, and Health Minister Mark Holland aims to involve all provinces and territories by next spring.

Toronto mom acquitted in daughter's death sues police, city
A Toronto mother who was convicted and later acquitted of murder in the death of her disabled daughter after four years in prison has filed a multimillion dollar lawsuit, alleging police were negligent in their investigation and caused her to be falsely imprisoned.
Cindy Ali and her husband Allan are seeking more than $10 million in damages, according to a statement of claim filed at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in August.
The lawsuit, first reported on by the Toronto Star, names as defendants the Toronto Police Service Board, the City of Toronto, the lead investigator in Ali's teenage daughter's death and a firefighter who testified at both her trials.
The claim argues the defendants were negligent and failed to meet a duty of care they owed the couple following the February 2011 death of their 16-year-old daughter Cynara, who had cerebral palsy and was unable to walk, talk or feed herself.
The allegations haven't been proven in court and none of the defendants have filed a statement of defence. The city and police board both declined to comment while the matter is before the courts.

As Chinatown operations hub winds down, efforts won't, Edmonton police pledge
The end of a pilot project addressing crime and disorder in Chinatown is causing concern among some community members, but police say their work will continue.
The Healthy Streets Operations Centre (HSOC) — a $15.2 million collaboration between the city, social service agencies and emergency workers set up two years ago — ends in December. But the Edmonton Police Service says their multidisciplinary approach, which also connects vulnerable community members to social supports, will carry on with internal funding.

Great white shark found dead on Haida Gwaii
A great white shark has been found dead on the coast of Haida Gwaii in northern B.C..
It was discovered by Mike Miles, who says he saw it while boating just south of Tlell, B.C., off Haida Gwaii's east coast.
"I thought I was seeing a young orca, then thought it was a beaked whale," he told CBC News via text message. "Then, a great white shark! Cool and a bit sad."
He reported it to the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), which has confirmed the species, saying it was a male measuring about 13.5 feet or four metres in length. They also found a seal in its gut, "a common prey for this species," according to spokesperson Athina Vazeos.
Vazeos said samples have been collected for research purposes, including cause of death, and beyond that, they are "letting nature take its course" on what happens to the body.

Some Liberal MPs are mounting a new effort to oust Justin Trudeau
Pressure is increasing on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as Liberal MPs are organizing to demand his resignation as party leader following recent byelection losses. Discontent among MPs has grown, leading to meetings where at least 20 have signed a confidential pledge to push for leadership change. Concerns about Trudeau's absence during key discussions and poor polling numbers—showing the party trailing the Conservatives by 20 points—have fueled this movement. Despite personal support for Trudeau, many MPs feel compelled to act as the party's future appears uncertain. The initiative remains discreet to avoid early backlash from his supporters.

Shots fired at Toronto Jewish girls school overnight: police
For the second time since May, police say shots were fired at a Jewish girls elementary school in Toronto.
Around 4 a.m. Saturday, Toronto police received a report of a smashed window at the Bais Chaya Mushka Girls Elementary School, Insp. Paul Krawczyk told reporters Saturday afternoon. Upon further investigation, police determined the window, along with other parts of the building, had been struck by gunfire.
No one was at the school at the time of the shooting, Krawczyk said, and there were no reports of any injuries. He also said police had not heard any reports of gunshots being heard in the area.
Police are not releasing any details about suspects at this time, Krawczyk said.
Krawczyk said the hate crime unit is involved in the investigation, adding that it is particularly concerning that the incident happened on the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, one of the most sacred days in the Jewish calendar.

Why Trudeau flew to the other side of the world to spend less than 48 hours in Southeast Asia
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's recent trip to Laos marked the first official visit by a Canadian prime minister to the country. Despite a chaotic parliamentary session and the looming threat of an early federal election, Trudeau undertook the 27-hour journey to attend the ASEAN summit. He spent about 48 hours in Laos, where he met with world leaders and announced a $128-million aid package for Southeast Asian nations.
Senior government officials emphasized the importance of Trudeau's attendance, as Canada had recently elevated its status with ASEAN after nearly a decade of efforts to strengthen ties. Missing the summit could have been seen as a snub, potentially undermining Canada's reputation as a reliable partner in the region. Julie Nguyen, chair of Canada-ASEAN initiatives, highlighted the necessity of face-to-face engagement to demonstrate Canada's commitment to the strategic partnership with ASEAN.

Shelters struggle to meet Thanksgiving demand amid cost-of-living crisis
The Ottawa Mission says it's had to renew a call for turkey donations this year after not meeting its Thanksgiving target, as the cost-of-living crisis impacts donors as much as the needy.
The shelter is one of two charities serving Thanksgiving meals in Ottawa that told CBC they are preparing to meet surging demand for their services this year, even as rising costs strains their budgets. While the Mission expects to provide between 16,000 and 17,000 full turkey meals, it recently put out a call for 600 donated birds — more than twice what they asked for before the pandemic, said CEO Peter Tilley.

Eby says no place for violence in B.C. politics after bomb threat
Violence should have no place in British Columbia politics, said New Democrat Leader David Eby as police investigated a bomb threat at a party campaign office on Vancouver Island.
Eby, who was campaigning Friday in Campbell River, said an NDP campaign office in the city was temporarily evacuated after the threat was made — although he was not present when it happened.
He said he is grateful for the courage of the office staff who were told to leave by the RCMP.
"We see in other parts of the world where people have to endure violence as part of the democratic process," said Eby at a campaign stop Saturday in Langley. "We don't want that in British Columbia. It's absolutely shameful."
He said he did not know what intent was behind the threat, but supported the police investigation.

Ottawa woman calling for health-care reform in N.B. after husband died on vacation
In the New Brunswick provincial election campaign, health care has become a focal point following the tragic death of Danny Makhoul in a Moncton hospital. His wife, Anne Makhoul, recounts a harrowing 36-hour experience in the emergency department, where she felt her husband did not receive adequate care. After suffering severe abdominal pain, Danny was transported from Sackville Memorial Hospital to Moncton, but despite being triaged as urgent, he experienced significant delays in treatment.
He ultimately died from necrotic enterocolitis, a condition linked to insufficient blood flow to the intestines. This incident highlights ongoing issues in the province's health care system, with previous deaths in emergency rooms prompting calls for reform. Anne is urging voters to advocate for improvements as the election nears.
