B.C. dogs involved in fatal pet mauling tested positive for drugs: city

In Kamloops, three pit bulls that fatally attacked a 13-year-old border collie last month tested positive for drugs, including cocaine, amphetamines, and methamphetamine. The city’s community services manager, Will Beatty, noted that while it's not common to find drugs in dogs' systems, it has occurred before. The city is seeking to have the dogs euthanized. Beatty emphasized that he cannot comment on how the drugs may have affected the dogs' behavior during the attack.

Morning school buses cancelled in Essex County due to fog

School buses in Essex County have been cancelled due to fog Friday morning. Transportation officials say buses in the City of Windsor are operational. Afternoon transportation in both the city and the county is expected to take place as normal.  Buses have been cancelled a handful of mornings in Essex County so far this school year. 

Environment Canada meteorologist Steven Flisfeder previously told CBC News this is the time of year where fog is most common in Canada, especially in places like the Windsor-area.

Ontario man who posted hospital selfie with woman's dying father sentenced to 60 days in jail

A London, Ont., man., who posted a selfie online showing him with a dying man in a Windsor hospital last year has received two months of jail time.

Bubba Pollock is an activist who's protested against drag queens and drag storytimes. He was sentenced in a Windsor courtroom on Friday for his actions against Britt Leroux and the Windsor woman's terminally ill father.

"I'm happy that he's gonna be held responsible," Leroux said outside court. "I'm fearful that he's not going to learn anything in jail. I think he needs more intense rehabilitation."

Pollock pleaded guilty earlier this year to a charge of criminal harassment that stems from his actions in June 2023.

Ontario Justice Mark Hornblower described Pollock's behaviour as "an exercise of power over someone else, intended to send a message of intimidation."

Hornblower ruled that an incarceration period of 60 days is necessary to "denounce conduct of this nature."

Pollock was also handed three years of probation, which includes a 12-month ban from social media use.

Woman, 30, charged in 3 murders in Toronto, Niagara Falls, Hamilton, police say

A 30-year-old Toronto woman has been arrested and charged with murder in the separate deaths of three people in Toronto, Niagara Falls and Hamilton, according to the Toronto police.

Niagara Regional Police and Hamilton Police Service said in a news release the victims are: an unidentified woman believed to be in her 60s in Toronto; Lance Cunningham, 47, in Niagara Falls; and, Mario Bilich, 77, in Hamilton. Sabrina Kauldhar has been charged with second-degree murder in the Toronto death, second-degree murder in the Niagara Falls death and first-degree murder in the Hamilton death.

Sean Mollitt says it's hard to get the images of a major building fire that claimed the lives of at least two people Friday out of his head.

Sleeping in his bedroom across from the three-storey, 100-year-old building on Notre-Dame Street in Old Montreal, Mollitt says he was awoken by what he thought was kids breaking windows.

Then he caught something far worse.

"All of a sudden, I hear a woman scream repeatedly, and it sounded absolutely horrible," he said.

Updated COVID-19 vaccines roll out at pharmacies

Health officials are urging those at higher risk for COVID-19 complications to get updated vaccines as new Health Canada-approved doses from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech arrive at pharmacies. These updated mRNA vaccines target the Omicron subvariant KP.2, which is currently dominant in Canada.

Dr. Don Sheppard from the Public Health Agency of Canada emphasizes that these vaccines can significantly reduce the risk of severe disease, particularly for individuals over 65, the immunocompromised, and those with limited access to healthcare, including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people.

While prior vaccinations and infections offer some protection, the ongoing contagiousness of the virus and waning immunity mean all adults should consider the updated vaccine. Vaccine uptake has been low, partly due to messaging challenges and misinformation. The updated vaccines will be available to everyone aged six months and older, regardless of their vaccination history. National COVID-19 indicators remain stable but elevated compared to the spring.

String of bike, scooter crashes has advocates sounding the alarm

A recent spate of road incidents that have left Ottawa cyclists and other commuters injured — or dead, in two cases — has advocates of safe and active transportation concerned. The five incidents span from Sept. 24 to this past Friday and took place at different times of day and in disparate corners of the city.

They coincide with the start of fall and, as some councillors note, the fact that more people are using the roads since the federal government upped its employees' weekly in-office attendance requirement to three days.

New footage of deadly Old Montreal fire shows masked person leaving the scene

As police continue to investigate Friday's deadly fire in Old Montreal, more security footage showing its immediate aftermath has surfaced.

Friday's five-alarm fire in a 100-year-old three storey building at the corner of Notre-Dame and Bonsecours streets killed two people. On Saturday, Montreal police confirmed the victims were 43-year-old Léonor Geraudie and her seven-year-old daughter Vérane Reynaud-Geraudie, who were French nationals.

The building housed a restaurant on the main floor and a hostel upstairs.

Since the deadly fire, Radio-Canada has obtained two videos from a security camera overlooking the front of the restaurant. The first one showed a person breaking into the building through its main floor, minutes before the fire broke out.

Identifying battlegrounds tough as B.C. election race heats up

Analysts are struggling to predict the October 19 British Columbia election due to significant changes in the political landscape. Key factors include the addition of six new ridings and the emergence of the B.C. Conservatives as the main challenger to the governing B.C. NDP, following the decline of the B.C. United party.

Former Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart and ex-B.C. Canadian doctors warned to be on the lookout for scurvy

Scurvy is a disease that likely conjures up images of sickly sailors from hundreds of years ago, but doctors in Canada are being warned to look out for the condition now, as a result of growing food insecurity. 

A report published Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) details the case study of a 65-year-old woman diagnosed with scurvy at a Toronto hospital last year.  The authors say the case points to the need for physicians to consider the possibility of scurvy, particularly among patients at higher risk for nutrient deficiencies, including people with low socioeconomic status and isolated older adults.
