Cigarette butts remain Vancouver's most littered item β and a seemingly unsolvable waste problem π¬
Cigarette butts are a toxic scourge due to their composition, and, in coastal cities like Vancouver, easily end up polluting the ocean, where they become a serious threat to biodiversity loss and ecosystem health.
Yet cigarette butts are still the No. 1 most littered item in Vancouver, where several education and mitigation programs over the years β including the threat of up to $10,000 in fines β have done little to make it socially unacceptable to discard them in the street.

Lawyers barred from practising law in Canada for 3 years after having Manitoba judge followed in 2021
Two Alberta lawyers charged with attempting to obstruct justice have been banned from practising law anywhere in Canada for three years as part of a plea deal with Manitoba prosecutors that saw their charges stayed. Randal Jay Cameron and John Carpay were also charged with intimidation of a justice system participant after they hired a private investigator to follow the Manitoba judge who presided over their case challenging COVID-19 restrictions in 2021.
Court of King's Bench Justice Shane Perlmutter accepted the application for a common-law peace bond in the case during a court appearance on Friday, when he said the accused demonstrated "unprofessional, unethical and dishonourable" conduct in hiring the investigator.

Minister Says West Should Elect More Liberals to Influence Carbon Tax Policy Like Atlantic Canada
The federal Minister of Rural Economic Development has suggested that if Western Canadian provinces want carbon pricing cuts like those in Atlantic Canada, they should elect more Liberal Members of Parliament (MPs). This comes after Prime Minister Trudeau announced a three-year pause on the carbon tax for heating oil and increased carbon tax rebates for rural households in response to public feedback and to address low- to median-income households. These measures will be piloted first in Atlantic Canada.

The study found that 86.7 percent of respondents include fish and seafood in their meals. While nutrition is the primary motivation for 64 percent of consumers, affordability is a concern for only 21 percent. The frequency of consumption varies by region, with British Columbia having the highest weekly consumption at 45.8 percent, and Quebec having the lowest at 27.2 percent. Daily consumption is rare, with only 2.4 percent in Ontario and 2.3 percent in British Columbia.

Hostages' families plead for help as Ottawa faces pressure to back a ceasefire in Gaza
Pro-Palestinian activists held a press conference on Parliament Hill Monday. The activists said Ottawa must call for a ceasefire as Israel ramps up its military campaign in Gaza before more civilians are killed by Israeli arms.
Several thousand Palestinians are believed to have died already in Israeli airstrikes, the activists said, and Canada's support for a "humanitarian pause" isn't enough. Canada backs a temporary halt to hostilities to allow aid into Gaza, a territory that has limited access to food and fuel.

Growing number of Canadians believe immigration levels too high: surve
A growing number of Canadians are expressing concerns about the current immigration levels in Canada, particularly regarding the potential impact on affordable housing. This marks a significant shift from the strong support for immigration seen in previous years. While more Canadians still disagree that immigration levels are too high, the gap between those who agree and disagree has significantly decreased over the past year, from 42 percentage points to just seven. This shift in public opinion is based on findings from the latest Focus Canada public research survey conducted by the Environics Institute.

Some Canadians Can't Afford to Heat or Cool Their Homes: StatCan
A recent Statistics Canada report reveals that 14% of Canadian households experienced unsafe or uncomfortable temperatures for at least four weeks in the past year, highlighting the issue of affordability for heating and cooling. Two percent of households required medical care due to extreme temperatures, and 3% had their energy disconnected or shut off in the last 12 months.
