Trudeau Announces Carbon Tax Pause on Heating Oil, Heat Pump Subsidies for Lower Income Households
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a three-year pause on the carbon tax for heating oil and increased subsidies for Canadians to adopt electric heat pumps. This move is aimed at reducing costs for households and small businesses while promoting a transition to cleaner energy sources. The federal carbon tax, set to increase annually until 2030, is being adjusted to accommodate the needs of rural communities, doubling the Climate Action Incentive Payment rural top-up rate. These measures reflect the government's commitment to addressing climate change and supporting Canadians during the transition.

Lich, Barber Trial: Ottawa Police Officer Says Convoy Protesters ‘Hostile’ When Told to Leave.
During the trial of protest organizers Tamara Lich and Chris Barber on October 27, an Ottawa police officer testified that Freedom Convoy protesters reacted aggressively when police instructed them to disperse. Sgt. Jordan Blonde stated, "There was more of a crowd being formed. It was very, very hostile at that point in time, so hostile that the liaison team on the ground made the decision to pull out of the area, and we didn't continue messaging at that time just due to the yelling and the screaming and swearing." He emphasized that the situation was extremely hostile and something he hopes to never experience again, referring to a crowd gathered on Wellington Street near Parliament Hill in downtown Ottawa.

Charges Dismissed Against Freedom Convoy Protester
Charges against an Ottawa protester involved in the 2022 Freedom Convoy, whose bank accounts were frozen, have been dropped by a judge. Evan Blackman had pleaded not guilty to obstructing police and mischief. The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) represented him and cited limited evidence and a police officer's poor recollection of key details for the dismissal. Lawyer Chris Fleury, representing Blackman, expressed satisfaction with the outcome. The case was based on a 14-minute drone video with no audio and a police officer's testimony at the scene.

Cigarette butts remain Vancouver's most littered item — and a seemingly unsolvable waste problem 🚬
Cigarette butts are a toxic scourge due to their composition, and, in coastal cities like Vancouver, easily end up polluting the ocean, where they become a serious threat to biodiversity loss and ecosystem health.
Yet cigarette butts are still the No. 1 most littered item in Vancouver, where several education and mitigation programs over the years — including the threat of up to $10,000 in fines — have done little to make it socially unacceptable to discard them in the street.

Lawyers barred from practising law in Canada for 3 years after having Manitoba judge followed in 2021
Two Alberta lawyers charged with attempting to obstruct justice have been banned from practising law anywhere in Canada for three years as part of a plea deal with Manitoba prosecutors that saw their charges stayed. Randal Jay Cameron and John Carpay were also charged with intimidation of a justice system participant after they hired a private investigator to follow the Manitoba judge who presided over their case challenging COVID-19 restrictions in 2021.
Court of King's Bench Justice Shane Perlmutter accepted the application for a common-law peace bond in the case during a court appearance on Friday, when he said the accused demonstrated "unprofessional, unethical and dishonourable" conduct in hiring the investigator.

Minister Says West Should Elect More Liberals to Influence Carbon Tax Policy Like Atlantic Canada
The federal Minister of Rural Economic Development has suggested that if Western Canadian provinces want carbon pricing cuts like those in Atlantic Canada, they should elect more Liberal Members of Parliament (MPs). This comes after Prime Minister Trudeau announced a three-year pause on the carbon tax for heating oil and increased carbon tax rebates for rural households in response to public feedback and to address low- to median-income households. These measures will be piloted first in Atlantic Canada.

Several thousand Palestinians are believed to have died already in Israeli airstrikes, the activists said, and Canada's support for a "humanitarian pause" isn't enough. Canada backs a temporary halt to hostilities to allow aid into Gaza, a territory that has limited access to food and fuel.
