MP Concerned Over Outdated Canadian National Security Policy, China Threat Omission
An MP has expressed concerns about Canada's outdated National Security Policy, highlighting its notable omission of any reference to security threats posed by the Chinese regime.
This issue came to light during a meeting of the House of Commons Science and Research Committee on October 23. Bloc Québécois MP Maxime Blanchette-Joncas pointed out that Canada's sole National Security Policy was released in 2004 in response to the September 11 terrorist attacks and has not been updated since. He emphasized that the policy does not make any reference to authoritarian states such as China and Russia, in contrast to the United States, which routinely updates its National Defense Strategy with every new presidential administration.

Federal Politicians Chime In on Renewed Quebec Independence Talk
Following a strong showing by the separatist Parti québécois (PQ) in a recent by-election and their study supporting Quebec's financial viability outside of Canada, federal politicians have responded. Federal Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez warned against revisiting divisive discussions of Quebec independence, while Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre saw the PQ's resurgence as a sign of Quebecers' discontent with the current government in Ottawa. The PQ, once powerful, has seen a decline, securing only three of 125 seats in the 2022 Quebec National Assembly elections.

Vaccine Passports Convinced Less Than 1 Percent More Individuals to Get Jabbed in Quebec, Ontario: Study
A peer-reviewed study has revealed that government-issued vaccine passports had a minimal impact on COVID-19 vaccination rates in Quebec and Ontario. These passports, mandated for non-essential activities in Canada, including dining out, going to theaters, and attending events, resulted in only a 0.9% increase in the vaccination rate in Quebec and a 0.7% increase in Ontario. The effect on vaccination rates for those over 60, a vulnerable group, was even lower, with just a 0.1% increase. This group was already highly vaccinated, according to the study.

Bank of Canada interest rate decision explained🏦
The Bank of Canada has decided to maintain its overnight rate at five percent. This marks the continuation of the rate that has been in place since July and is the highest level in over twenty years. The decision comes as Canada's economy experiences a slowdown, and there are signs that supply and demand are approaching a state of balance. For insights on what this means for Canadians, CTV's Alexandra Pinto interviewed licensed insolvency trustee Doug Hoyes from Hoyes, Michalos & Associates Inc.😟
The decision by the Bank of Canada to keep interest rates steady was expected by many, including the speaker. They had previously predicted that interest rates may have reached their peak, with the high rates already having a notable impact on the economy. Raising interest rates is typically done to curb economic growth, and it appears that this effect is already taking place, so the decision not to increase rates further did not come as a surprise.😶

Over half of Canadians (53%) spend more than $200 per month on home heating and energy, with 21% finding it a significant financial burden, according to research conducted for the federal Natural Resources department. This information was part of a report titled "Supporting Accessibility, Inclusivity and Retention on Energy Efficiency Programs," which aimed to understand why Canadians were not utilizing federal grants for home retrofits. Saskatchewan Premier Calls Federal Government One of the ‘Biggest Threats’ to Province in Throne Speech
The government of Saskatchewan views the federal government in Ottawa as a major threat to the provincial economy. In response, they plan to review federal Clean Electricity Regulations through a newly created tribunal. Premier Scott Moe expressed concerns about the perceived impracticality and cost of energy standards and net-zero emissions targets set for 2035. The government will use The Saskatchewan First Act to refer these regulations and the oil and gas emissions cap to the Economic Impact Assessment Tribunal, which aims to assess the economic impact of federal initiatives.

Landlords have been fined 11 times in 4 years for bad faith evictions. That's far too low, say experts
Ontario's Landlord and Tenant Board issued 11 fines in nearly four years for bad faith evictions — but tenants' lawyers say that number is staggeringly low and reflects a failure by the province to protect tenants.🚫 👱♂️
CBC Toronto obtained the number of fines from the Landlord and Tenant Board. Nearly all of the 11 fines issued from January 2020 to the end of September 2023 amounted to less than $3,000 per landlord with two exceptions. One fine was issued for $5,000 and another was fined $10,000.👨⚖️
