Hello everyone! There is an interesting talk happening this evening at 5 PM at the Townsend Center (220 Stephens):
Victor Erofeev offers a provocative exploration of the “new barbarism” of the 21st century, in which power eclipses justice. In a talk that connects Russia, Ukraine, Europe, and the US, Erofeev argues that leaders like Putin and Trump reflect deep cultural shifts — and asks what comes next.

Come to the Slavic Department Colloquium tomorrow! Professor Valerya Mutc from UC Davis will be giving a talk on "Maxim Gorky and the Capitalist Fictions of Late Imperial Russia"
This talk will examine the development of working-class literary subjectivity in the nineteenth century. It will focus on Maxim Gorky’s efforts to envision a central working-class hero, indispensable both narratively and socio-economically. The talk will argue that Gorky responded by developing a new version of literary subjectivity for workers—one in which they always maintained a connection to their labor. Although the writer initially attempted this in realist prose, he ultimately found theater to be an optimal medium for such a task. This was due to theater’s embodied nature: unlike in a novel, laborers on stage were able to retain a bodily connection to their labor while preserving narrative autonomy.
