How has the Zapatista experiment altered our concept of autonomy? Can we characterize it as an example, at once concrete and impure, of a destituent process?

Drawing on decades of participatory research, Jérôme Baschet surveys a remarkable living utopia.

A Call to Form a Weelaunee Defense Society

We all know what this is about. Despite whatever they say, it isn’t about terrorism, police funding, or movie studios. It’s not about one forest or one police training facility. This is about the earth and how we live on it.

The recent domestic terror charges levied at forest defenders in Atlanta are just another transparent attempt to produce an enemy to be crushed and managed. A justification for the powerful’s own twisted existence and the pleasure they derive from bullying those who would rather live in trees than accept this way of life as it is.

And just how transparent it is. All the funding and state of the art police weaponry at their disposal and yet they must invent a threat from camp stoves and pallet cafes in a park. Their paranoid fantasies reveal a self-conscious weakness that they know their power is built on lies, that with the summer of 2020 millions of people caught a glimpse of the emperor without his clothes, and it is only a matter of time before these millions tire of entertaining his little charade.

Enough about them, what must we do?

What would it take to have people from across the country ready to respond if construction begins? What would need to happen in the next 6 months to have your town ready to send a delegation to Georgia to participate in the leading climate and abolitionist struggle in the US? What can you and your friends do where you are, right now?

Form local committees and meet. Even if it’s just 2 people, start there. Attempt to cohere a group capable of making statements, researching and counter recruiting at job fairs where the contractors and corporate backers of Cop City attempt to find new hires. Hold discussions, form travel funds, anything which makes sense locally. Think of ways to engage and involve other people. Lets use this to connect with faith based groups, abolitionist networks, environmental groups, lawyers, and musicians. Anyone else you can think of. Is Hollywood moving to gentrify your city too? Show up and make visible their investment in the destruction of the real world, to put a fantasy on a screen. Existing groups can function as a committee as well, this could be a way to move beyond Extinction Rebellion. We can turn their repression against them by using it to galvanize our energy, by extending the struggle beyond Atlanta, beyond cop city, beyond the forest in South Atlanta known to the Muskogee as Weelaunee Forest.

Act now, Don’t wait. It is important to craft angles that lower the barrier to action and make people more likely to do something.

A Plan:

The Goal: Widespread, self-directed participation in a mass movement to oppose police militarization and environmental ruin.

The Method: Use outrage about repressive overreach to both articulate and demonstrate our commitment and ability to win the struggle. Connect local committees to a national network to form a Weelaunee Defense Society. The method is not the goal, it is the method. Somehow, in our own ways, lets try to keep that in mind.

1. Form committees to propagandize and spread information about the projects. Some have already formed in NYC, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Austin. These committees should communicate roughly once a month at minimum via Signal and Jitsi.
2. Raise money to start a local forest defense fund or political solidarity fund for use in your city.
3. Organize arrestee support events to host letter writings to arrestees and to prosecutors & decision makers who have labeled activists “domestic terrorists”.
4. Participate in localized pressure campaigns against the funders and builders of Cop City. (Visit stopreevesyoung.com to find some near you).
5. Generate and share stories, media, images and more about why you are getting organized to defend Weelaunee.

WEEK OF ACTION: MARCH 4-11

Only self-organized resistance can save the South River Forest from destruction. Join us this week in the beautiful Weelaunee Forest to take a stand.

Despite overwhelming local and national opposition to the construction of Cop City, the APF and their contractors continue to make plans to destroy the Weelaunee Forest and to build Cop City.

The Week of Action is an open format event - You can organize any event during this time, whether it’s a protest, bbq, concert, or yoga class.

Submit your event to DTFWEEKOFACTION@riseup.net along with a flyer and description.

Together, we can stop Cop City.
