No matter where or who you are; no matter how you're communicating; no matter how careful you are; if you are actively anti-establishment in any way (in our case, as anarchists), you are ALWAYS at risk of the prying-eyes of feds and their analysis tools. The best way to protect yourself is simple: if you don't need to say it, don't say it. Don't identify yourself. Don't talk about where you live. Don't talk about your plans, your experiences, your friends, unless you can do so in a way that will not be useful for anyone trying to keep a tab on you, your friends and your activities. DON'T MAKE IT EASY FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT! Their strategy is to let you incriminate yourself as they quietly record as much as they can about you.

The following are some tips and tricks to preventing feds and undeclared bots from infesting Telegram chats you would rather keep as private as possible. The information may be useful for other services too, however keep in mind that Telegram is not a very secure platform. Other networks, such as the Matrix network, are far more private and secure. For more sensitive matters Telegram shouldn't be your go-to. Please note that not all of this can be applied to public chats as they cannot avoid the possibility of quiet infestation through chat previewing.

First and foremost, make the chat private. Private chats cannot be previewed, and you can change the history settings for new members.

Do not allow new members to view the history. By allowing full history access, you are allowing undeclared bots and feds to simply join and export everything immediately. This makes their job insanely easy.

Use a chat management bot of some kind. My personal favorite is @shieldy_bot, a free and open-source guardian bot with customizable captchas and other helpful features. Unfortunately, however, it does not seem to be able to remove lurkers. I usually configure mine to make new users solve a simple arithmetic equation within five seconds or get banned. Oh, and remember to lock features to admins only when using this bot, it does not seem to come that way by default.

REMEMBER: ONLY FEDS AND UNDECLARED BOTS JOINLURK.

If someone has been inactive/lurking after a set amount of time, you should remove them, even if they've held conversations in the past. It's not like they were participating, anyway.

Study the behaviour of feds online. The following text file after this post titled "The Gentleman's Guide to Forum Spies (spooks, feds, etc.)" is a good starting point that contains useful information. If they have no other choice but to participate in a community, they will fuck up somewhere. Feds can be geniuses just as easily as they are often morons, but when you're trying to look normal in a community about something you know nothing of, you'd be bound to fuck up somewhere too.

If you have a bad feeling about a recently-joined member, you're probably right in feeling that way. Has anyone else heard of them? Have they recently joined Telegram? Do they have any profile pictures? If so, how long ago were they uploaded? Do they have a bio? Are their username and screen name too "normal"? Does anything about that account seem randomly-chosen or computer-generated? Are they actively participating in the chat? Does anything about what they're saying seem odd or unusual?

Do not tolerate baitposting. "Who here wants to bomb a police station?", "can someone tell me how to make a bomb?", "anyone in X area?", etc.

And now I will reiterate what I said in the beginning. If it can be used against you, don't say it. You can never fully trust someone on Telegram unless you know them personally. Trust your gut.

COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT FOR REBELS: Skills For Revolutionary Survival #5

by the Indigenous Anarchist Federation.

"Face the facts. We are tied to our devices in ways that are incredibly useful for organizing, but that also expose us to isolation should the state and companies take away these technologies. Cell phones and the internet rely on corporate infrastructure and is subject to both government surveillance and service denial. What do we do when social media bans anti-capitalists and anti-colonialists? What do we do when our cell phones fully become monitoring devices we willingly keep by our side, all to the benefit of state intelligence services? What happens when our cell phone numbers are blocked from service? How will the revolutionaries continue to communicate locally, regionally, and internationally?"
