⚠️ KuCoin earns ISO 22301 certification for operational resilience

‼️ KuCoin has secured ISO 22301:2019 certification for its business continuity management system, adding an international continuity standard to the exchange’s existing security and operational controls. ISO 22301 sets requirements for a Business Continuity Management System, or BCMS, under which companies identify possible operational disruptions, establish response procedures and prepare recovery plans for critical services.

➡️ For KuCoin, the certification adds business continuity management to a compliance framework that already includes ISO/IEC 27001:2022 for information security and SOC 2 Type II for operational controls. The exchange said ISO 22301 is designed to cover disruptions that can come from cyber incidents, infrastructure failures, problems involving outside service providers and other unexpected events. Its focus extends beyond preventing an incident by requiring procedures for keeping important operations running and restoring services when interruptions occur.

🌐 Such requirements have particular relevance for cryptocurrency exchanges because trading takes place around the clock rather than within fixed market hours. Platforms must maintain access to trading, asset transfers, payments and other services across different regions and time zones.

🔗 Bitcoin price rebounds to $63,600, but can BTC break $65,500?

📊 Bitcoin price recovered from the $62,700 area as buyers defended a key support zone, but ETF outflows, weak trend signals, and heavy overhead liquidity continue to limit the rebound. The move followed several unsuccessful attempts by sellers to push BTC below the $62,500–$62,700 region. Bitcoin had fallen from above $65,000 earlier in August, leaving the market vulnerable to a deeper correction before buyers returned near monthly support.

🌐 BTC reached an intraday high of $63,717 during the recovery. The bounce also moved the price above the $63,166 level, which marks the 78.6% Fibonacci retracement of the advance from $57,803 to $82,864. Holding above that retracement level keeps Bitcoin inside the range formed after its June sell-off. However, the daily chart shows that BTC has not yet reversed the wider decline from its May peak.

➡️ The recovery coincided with modest gains in US equity futures. Nasdaq 100 futures rose as technology shares led a broader risk-asset rebound, while lower expectations for another aggressive Federal Reserve rate increase supported demand for Bitcoin. The dollar fell to a 10-day low as Treasury yields eased. A weaker dollar can support assets priced in dollars, although elevated bond yields remain a source of competition for capital.

➡️ Illinois crypto groups seek injunction against new tax

🔗 The Blockchain Association and Crypto Council for Innovation sued Illinois on Aug. 21 to block a 0.2% digital asset tax scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2027. The filing is the second industry lawsuit challenging the Illinois crypto tax. The Digital Chamber brought a separate case in July.

⚠️ The tax is based on an asset’s value rather than a customer’s profit or the fee earned by a broker. Consequently, a transfer between wallets controlled by the same customer could fall within the statutory definition even when no sale occurs. Brokers must register and begin collecting the tax by Jan. 1. Initial remittances would become due in February 2027, according to the complaint.

🔖 One provision treats a broker with at least $100,000 in qualifying Illinois receipts during the previous 12 months as maintaining a place of business in the state. However, the plaintiffs argue that other collection and registration provisions lack that threshold, creating uncertainty about which companies must comply.

⚠️ Trump’s crypto bank is 49% owned by the UAE’s ‘spy sheikh’ and it just got a federal charter

📊 Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan, the UAE’s national security advisor and brother of its president, holds the single largest stake in WLTC Holdings through StringZ Holding RSC. The Trump family owns 38%. On August 14, the OCC granted this entity preliminary conditional approval for a federally regulated national trust bank to issue and redeem USD1, a stablecoin with more than $4 billion in circulation. In the same administration that loosened AI chip export caps to the UAE, $263 million from the original deal has already flowed to Trump family entities.

‼️ A sitting president’s family has never before held a financial stake in a company that received a federal banking charter from regulators appointed by that same president. That is no longer a hypothetical. It happened on August 14, 2026, when the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency conditionally approved World Liberty Trust Company, National Association, to organize as a federally regulated national trust bank.

🔗 The approval capped a 221-day review process. The application was filed in January 2026, the same month the Trump administration began rolling back Biden-era restrictions on advanced chip exports to Gulf states. By the time the OCC signed off, the largest single shareholder in the holding company behind the bank was not Donald Trump or any member of his family. It was an entity controlled by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan, the UAE’s national security advisor, brother of President Mohamed bin Zayed, and one of the most powerful figures in Middle Eastern finance.

🔔 Dollar stablecoins can weaken local currencies, BOK finds

🔖 Demand for dollar-backed stablecoins can place downward pressure on national currencies when investors receive direct access through fiat trading pairs, according to research published by the Bank of Korea on Sept. 3. The effect appeared after Binance introduced trading between selected local currencies and stablecoins such as USDT and USDC.

➡️ The researchers found that direct fiat-stablecoin markets strengthened the connection between crypto demand and foreign exchange markets. Stablecoin premiums became smaller, but demand shocks also gained a route into conventional currency trading. The findings do not establish that stablecoin demand always causes currency depreciation. The measured relationship depended on market structure, access to global intermediaries and the availability of direct trading pairs.

🌐 Dollar stablecoins trade globally, but investors in many countries cannot always purchase them directly with local currency on a large international exchange. They may instead buy stablecoins through domestic platforms, peer-to-peer markets or intermediaries.

⚠️ South Korea CBDC plan draws warning over privacy risks

🔔 South Korea’s People Power Party has opposed any central bank digital currency rollout without legal safeguards covering privacy, spending controls and consumer choice. “I strongly oppose the introduction of CBDC until legal and institutional safeguards are perfectly established so that the public can feel safe,” Jang said.

👀 The conservative People Power Party sits in opposition to President Lee Jae Myung’s Democratic Party government. Jang took control of the party in August 2025 following its defeat in that year’s presidential election. Jang said payment convenience and efficiency did not justify proceeding before lawmakers settled questions about privacy and individual control. He asked how far authorities could trace citizens’ transactions and whether digital money could restrict where funds are spent.

⚠️ His statement raised the possibility that programmable currency could carry expiration dates or other conditions. Jang asked whether people would retain a right to choose their preferred form of money if South Korea introduced a central bank digital currency. “While there is a view that CBDC is a new technology capable of enhancing payment convenience and efficiency, we should not rush into it solely because of its convenience,” he said.

➡️ Hong Kong jails ex-banker over $470K USDT bribes

🔖 Hong Kong has jailed former China Construction Bank (Asia) relationship manager Lam Chun-yin for four years after he admitted accepting more than $470,000 in Tether to authenticate false bank instruments carrying a stated value above $1.6 billion. The Independent Commission Against Corruption said on Sept. 18 that District Court Judge Ernest Lin Kam-hung sentenced the 32-year-old after his guilty plea to one count of conspiracy for an agent to accept advantages under Hong Kong’s Prevention of Bribery Ordinance and Crimes Ordinance.

👀 The court ordered Lam to repay approximately HK$3.7 million to CCB (Asia), an amount equal to the bribes identified in the case. ICAC said the judge started from a six-year prison term and reduced it by one-third because Lam pleaded guilty, leaving a four-year sentence after finding no exceptional reason for another reduction. At the time of the offenses, ICAC said Lam worked in the Consumer Banking Division at CCB (Asia)’s Causeway Bay retail branch, where he served individual customers. The agency said his role did not cover business credit facilities or letters of credit, and the bank had never authorized him to handle such products.

📊 Vesttoo Limited, which has since ceased operations, ran a platform for insurance-related investment transactions. ICAC said investors using the platform had to provide bank-issued standby letters of credit so an issuing bank could ultimately cover relevant losses if an investor failed to meet its obligations. Yu Po Holdings Limited entered the platform as an investor in early 2022. The anti-graft agency said a criminal group then arranged for Lam to falsely present himself as China Construction Bank’s contact person for standby letters of credit connected with Yu Po.
