Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is facing backlash after the state’s Board of Pardons voted to pardon a man convicted of repeatedly sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the conviction was the basis for the man’s deportation, and the pardon could help him fight his removal from the U.S. DHS condemned the decision, while officials have not yet responded to requests for comment.

A California man has pleaded guilty to harassing the family of Nancy Guthrie during the investigation into her disappearance. Derrick Callella admitted to repeatedly contacting the family and asking about a bitcoin transfer despite knowing an earlier ransom demand had already been made.
